This is such a beautiful clip. I began watching this soap with my grandmother in the 70's. I used to stay with her over the summers and really got into it. By the time I was a teenager VCR's were invented and I could record the show while I was in school.

This shows just how old the show was. Tom was a little boy here and he was a middle aged man when the show ended!

In the netherlands we have never seen the old story of as the world turns, its started 22 years ago, so I love to see the old classics.

Such a mesmerizing scene. Very simple but lots of undercurrents. You can take all the flash and sexy editing away - what soaps have always been about it relationships, whether it's romance, familial or friendships. And Bob, Nancy and Grandpa are such a believable family.

I'm not sure I've ever seen Grandpa Hughes before...
I wish that more of this type of stuff was available, there's a real audience out there for this type of footage.

Grandpa, or Pa Hughes, was an O.G. character until 1976 when Santos Ortega passed away. He was originally played by eventual "Sesame Street" star, Will Lee, who lasted a month until Ortega took over.

Even though I found the language strangely colloquial and formal at the same time, I found myself quickly engaged in the World of the characters. Lisa going to Chicago to 'get away' is still a very contemporary issue with some people feeling the desire to break free from ascribed societal roles. Some real issues presented in a subtle way, not in huge sweeping scenes the way today's soaps often do (to varying success). I like the tone of the scene and the organic interaction between characters

Are they referring to Lisa going to Chicago and "Our Private World"?

I would like to get caught up with the entire story from the beginning of atwt to the finale. I thought Lisa was in love with a man named Bruce and pregnant with a second child(probably not Bob's). Bob wanted to buy a house for his family and Lisa got all hysterical saying she wasn't ready for anything so permanent!!!

Good memory! Lisa did indeed have a fling with a married shoe salesman named Bruce Elliott & she was against permenentcy such as homeownership. During those days she would run around & hire a cleaning lady to do her work - & she'd accept praise from Nancy for doing such a good job. This was the first of a few times Eileen Fulton got death threats & had to have a security guard escort her back & forth from the studio. Her father was a Methodist minister & he got critical letters from fellow clergymen asking how he could effectively lead his folk when she was having an affair with Bruce Elliott (those clergymen should have known better that it was a story). In 1965 she appeared in a prime time spin-off called Our Private World that had her character moving to Chicago, meeting & marrying a rich man who sired her second son (Scott Eldridge - whose existence wasn't disclosed until the 1990s) and she had another son (Chuckie - who died - neither Bob nor Bruce were the father).

@@alexisdiva9 I think Chuckie was her son with Michael Shea.

This was the absolute heyday of ATWT, Penny had more heartache then one soap character could endure and Lisa was the scheming bitch of Oakdale. Lisa would return from Chicago a wealthy widow, blond and scheming. She would steal Dr. Micheal Shea from Claire Lowell and be hated by everyone in town.

There sure is. All I may advise is that you write to CBS and Proctor & Gamble, as that is all one may do to influence them to search for and release more kinescopes and video of these vintage soap operas. I have already done so myself, but the more voices they hear, the better.

Remember on Guiding Light Mike Bauer left Springfield for Venezuela or New York and chose not to stay with Aunt Trudy. His marriage to Robin was annulled and he was so sad and he had to deal with the death of his Best Friend Carl who he accidentally killed.

    Grandpa: (1:14-2:27)
" I ask myself, "Why does a person go away, away from a problem, just so they can prove something?" A lot of people do that ya know! Gotta get away. Gotta get away & work things out...Seems to me the best place to work out anything is right where it is...you come back....We'll see who's right, you or me."

  • @laminage

That's funny, maybe since he lived with them, and they had Bob, he was always referred to as "Grandpa". Also, remember on The Waltons Olivia always referred to her "In Laws" as Grandma & Grandpa. I wonder if Santos Ortega (Grandpa) was Latin.

In response to your 7 year old question, he was. His father was Venezuelan and his mother was Irish. Plus, Chris referred to him as Pa (for obvious reasons).

What I wouldn't have given for Grandpa Hughes and "Papa Bauer" from Guiding Light and just talk about their Families and the like. In Late November in The UK, Characters from Soaps do a Switcheroo where they go to each other's towns and "Hang Out". It's a Comedy Special where Money is raised for Children In Need. Cheryl Cole (Former X Factor Judge US), appeared on Coronation St., and the her Bandmate Sarah Harding both of which were in The Girlgroup Girls Aloud also appeared on The Show.

Is he Nancy's grandpa too? LOL how can he be both her and Bob's grandfather?

    • @alexisdiva9
      @alexisdiva9 4 роки тому +4

I think Nancy referred to him as Grandpa as a courtesy title - he was her father-in-law. I've heard of fathers calling their wives Mother - most likely it's an ingrained habit to teach the children how to correctly address their elders.
