Just taken delivery of “here’s some that got away” on 2nd hand cd from 1993 - has a further 10 months unreleased songs / demos plus 12 b side - it’s also excellent so worth hunting down - thanks to @beatleytonebeatleschannel for the heads up on that one ☝️

No need to defend. The Style Council were awesome. I still have every single & LP and various memorabilia and saw them Live at Bristol Hippodrome in 1984 and have lots of happy teenage memories of the band .

I love The Style Council. Such a brave move for Mr. Weller. Leaving The Jam and forming a radically different type of band. They basically introduced the world to the genre of sophistipop. They introduced most of us to the brilliance of Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn. I can't think of any other band that did such subversively beautiful pop music other than Steely Dan. Such an important band and my favorite period of Paul Weller's musical career.

'Our Favourite Shop' was easily the best album of '85. It was voted as such in an end of year poll.

Mmm - trying to think what else was around in 85 ? Hounds of love , meat is murder .. but yes it’s a strong contender- I’m still taken aback all these years later by the directness of those political lyrics - could you imagine a mainstream pop act making an album like that now ? Thanks for commenting 🫡

I personally love early Style Council including fabulous ‘Introducing’ EP which was behind you! Absolutely correct on their best album, and some of their 45’s belong amongst the best of Weller full stop.

Great video and a fair summary of their career. Favourite shop is far and away their best but i like Cafe Bleu. TSC were a singles band to me -they put great singles but fairly average albums. I tjink i have everything including the box set and saw them once at Live Aid. I hated The Cost of Loving when it came out but love it now. The singular adventures is also a good comp. @@gavaxemanspinsOne of my biggest regrets was selling my vinyl collection many years ago. It was a case of keeping a roof over my head. Same roof I’m under today, so music did save my life..Lol I replaced them all on C.D . I do agree keep the solid format , cause some of this stuff could just disappear.
Couple of vinyl I still have include The Jam live E.P which came with the initial copies of the album Snap. The Mods May Day 79 album and Stiff Little Fingers Alternative Ulster.
Kept those back as being extra special..I would part with them to a decent home.

@@gavaxemanspinswas a tad bemused listening to it as a Jam obsessed 17 year old back in 1984. Think the strength of first single Speak Like a Child kept me engaged and grew to love them but agree not as consistent as The Jam. Like you mention they shine as a singles band and the quality of B sides like Spin’ Drifing and It Just Came to Pieces is incredible. It’s also telling how time has been so kind to the Confessions album and how even the most ardent critics of the time see it now as a damn good album. Weller is on my Mount Rushmore of all time greats with decades of output, less than 10% of which I think is bad.
Brian Wilson, Neil Young, Ray Davies and PW. Paul has the lowest percent of misfires, probably under 5%. Neil is a close second.
