Matt had the best Tolkien content in my opinion. I await these videos with great eagerness. Awesome video with hands down the best detail of any Galadriel video I’ve seen.
Thanks for a great video! I agree with you, I much prefer 'canonical' Galadriel to the late revision. It makes her rejection of the Ring more powerful, knowing that she's seen firsthand -- even in herself -- the dangers of ambition.
Me, too - I also like that she didn't need Celeborn with her to fight for the Teleri. And that she's basically "slumming" with an elf from the wrong side of the tracks when she meets him haha
An excellent part 1 Matt, well done. I particularly liked the bit where you picked up on the relationship between Galadriel the pupil, and Melian the mentor in Doriath. I find it absolutely zero coincidence that the protected nature of her realm of Lothlorien during the 3rd age (enhanced by her ring of course) echos the Girdle of Melian during the 1st age. She basically learned from the very best enchantress!!
I recently listened to fellowship of the rings and heard that passage last Thursday and never even guessed at this much meaning. Im so glad you made this video today. The poem of farewell i mean.
Thanks for the shout out Matt. My kids got a real kick out of it. As usual, your Galadriel Part 1 video was just excellent. I especially loved your readings from Tolkien's work. I've seen many other character histories on Galadriel and your's was by far the best. She is one of my favourite characters and I'm very much looking forward to Part 2.
This was wonderful! For whatever reason I was never too much interested in Galadriel or in Feanor, but then you do these wonderful videos and prove me wrong :D
The narrative arc and dynamic between Galadriel and Feanor (and also later between her and Feanor's grandson) are, for me, Tolkien at his very best world-building. It vividly demonstates how the Eldar are both brilliant beyond human measure, but also highly fallible (particularly in their 'youth'). I love Lord of the Rings, of course, but I love his mythology and lore of the earlier ages even more! I highly recommend reading The History of Galadriel & Celeborn from the Unfinished Tales to get an understanding of the sheer scope of her story.
@@kevinneighbour3458 It took me ages to understand that Unfinished Tales is not part of The History of Middle-earth :D Some time ago I bought the new illustrated edition of Unfinished Tales, and till today made it as far as the second page of Tuor and his coming to Gondolin, hahaha. Life keeps me too busy, too little time for reading. But I am determind to read it ...this year :D My favourite Elf is Cirdan, followed by Maedhros.
@@anni.68 To be fair it is (kind of) part of the history. However, it is also a fascinating commentary on Tolkien's continually evolving vision for his creation. Some parts of it are considered more 'canon' than others; namely the sections which align more directly with other written works such as The Silmarillion and LotR. Cirdan is an intriguing character by his sheer elusiveness and lack of solid info! Maedhros is arguably more nuanced than his father. Dork Lords has done a great video on him too. For similar reasons I really like Celebrimbor. Very conflicted. Tries to do the right thing. Tends to do the wrong thing!!

One of my favorite characters and stories in the Legendarium...and also easily one of the most confusing, contradictory and changing stories of the Legendarium. I really look forward to seeing how you handled it. It's already a challenge not to mangle everything up
I am glad you are doing a series on Galadriel... I know Tolkein said she was the most powerful of elves (except Feanor maybe?).... but I think she far surpasses even Feanor. She did NOT use power for her own sake, but she could do so much. Like Feanor, she could capture light... in her mirror.... and even in her phial of Galadriel. She learned much from Melian too... protecting her domain in a similar fashion... making Lembas... Mirovar... and on top of these, she produced a wizard's staff... and near the end, though Sauron was driven out the first time by "devices of Saruman", it was Galadriel who utterly destroys Dol Guldur. She exercise the most prudent use of power and in nearly all cases shares it with others for the good of all. Think of the other things.... the sheath she made for Anduril.... and the other blades, the elven rope, and the box she gave Sam (a most precious gift). She is under-rated.... severely, in my opinion... but I think she showed she could combine many skills to exercise power and obviously had the benefit of centuries of close friendship and tutelage from Melian as well. Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts.... I'll be looking forward to these.
It strikes me that you mentioned in Feanor's videos that, upon his dying he tells his sons to renew the Oath, and that one of sons (which on again?) doesn't wish to renew but does so perhaps by the peer pressure of his brothers all agreeing to - you noted that it was seem damning to be the one son to disavow. Now here we have the sons and daughter of Finarfin all refusing to return to Valinor with him and instead following Feanor.... I love how these stories often have counterpoints like this - it shows how diverse and complex are the motives of each character.
Making my way through the LOTR videos you have and all of them have been awesome my video request/ proposition is one describing the elf and human relationships and their descendants and maybe other races that got together idk
Thanks so much for the kind words, Ryan! And great suggestion - adding it to my topic list. I do have a video about the most famous elf/human relationship - Beren and Luthien: ua-cam.com/video/zieuiF9N7yY/v-deo.html
Great video! Thanks Matt. Are you planning any videos on the war of wrath? Wasn’t sure if there are details beyond the Sillmarilion, especially which Valar were involved.
Thanks for the kind words - and thanks for the suggestion! I've covered the aftermath of the War of Wrath but not the battle itself - adding it to my topic list!
This may be the total geek in me, but I'm writing a short story in two parts, interpreting the events where she denies Fëanor a strand of her hair and then when she fights against him during the First Kinslaying (which I seriously doubt he was cool with). I just absolutely love the idea of these two egos clashing and the effect they have on each other. Not to mention, she was the only one of Finarfin's host who fought against Fëanor at Alqualondë. Not that I'm badmouthing her bros, maybe she simply got there before they did, but I just find that so interesting that out of all her father's children, she was the only one who had the guts to defend their mother's kin.
I love your choice of short story topics! And agreed - fighting against the Noldor during the kinslaying is a huge character-defining moment for Galadriel.
Good question, Johnny! For recaps of current shows, my goal is to get the recaps out before the next episode drops. For the Tolkien content, I'm currently trying to get out a video every 2 weeks. The wild card is the editing - it may not look it, but it takes a long time to edit these vids - so, I typically upload them as soon as they're edited.
Thanks for a great piece on one of my favorite characters. Hey, I was wondering if you are going to cover the upcoming Foundation series (Apple, I think?). You strike me as an Asimov kind of guy :)
Great breakdown in a clear voice. The alternate story on tolkiens last note would need more narrative devices to be as appealing as the published material. An interaction of slightly rebellious Osse or perhaps Uinen to allow them to break the travel ban and also might explain why others in Erressa and Valinor have not made an eastern sea voyage before or after except the ambassadors return and the voyage of the Istari and the war of wrath all of which were not like singular elves as Galadriel and boyfriend in boat would be in that story.
Oh... and don't forget... she had the use of the ring AND the elfstone, which I'm sure she wrought works from both for the benefit of all as well. In the end, it was Elrond who cured Celebriant... I wonder if Galadriel tried... but JUST LIKE FEANOR, the Valar failed her. They could not or did not bring Feanor's mother back... they were not so helpful with Celebrian either.. Maybe... just maybe.... the Valar were able to treat her and keep her in Lorien in Valimar. I'm sure that for her and for Elrond, the idea of seeing Celebrian again was a BIG factor in their decision to go west.
Agreed! It's interesting that Celeborn delayed his trip West, going after Galadriel. He probably stayed behind to help manage the other lingering elves, and he wasn't returning to the West, but i'd think the motivation of being with his wife and daughter would make him go with Galadriel.
I did hear about that - exciting! I'm most impressed with her work on Counterpart. We covered that show on the channel - excellent, underrated show - quality stuff.
Arnt the mountains north of Mordor named after Tolkien's wife ? Or one of the middle earth mountain ranges. ERED something or other ? I'm sure I read that somewhere before. Possibly part of the grey mountains or the mountains of ash. Haven't got my book to hand
Hey all,i was wandering about something, Does post-4th age elves still hear about the world? As in, is there any info channel from middle earth to valinor or are they completely cut off from the world?
Great question! I think anyone living in Aman in the 4th Age was cut off from Middle-Earth. In the 3rd Age, one tool of communication was the Elendil Stone (one of the 7 palantiri), but that was taken to the West as well at the end of the 3rd Age. Complete speculation here - but if Aragorn had wanted to communicate with the West in the 4th Age, perhaps he could have salvaged the Master Stone from the Anduin - it was the huge palantir at Osgiliath for several years. As a Master Stone, perhaps it could be attuned to communicate with the Master Stone on Tol Eressea in the West? Probably not, but it would be worth a try!
Galadriel, Tolkien's second most important female character, behind Luthien: powerful, talented, beautiful and wise. In the years of the Trees, her youthful self was fiery and ambitious. Clearly she hungered for freedom to act outside the strictures of Aman. She was so like Feanor in that way. She saw the possibility of ruling a land, ordering it according to her will and designs. Tolkien juxtaposed her to Feanor and she shares his faults of pride. She is wilful and arrogant in her wisdom. We hear very little of her in the First Age, after the training by Melian. Where was she during the Beren and Luthian saga? Was she and Celeborn present at the time of the sack of Doriath? I think they were not, having already traversed the Blue mountains before the sack. That may reflect the increasing importance to Tolkien later rather than earlier. So her relevance increased after the Lay of Luthien was created. I am interested to see the Amazon Prime interpretation of her involvement in the foundation of and rule of Eregion. In the Third Age, she is the most powerful (dangerous) person in Middle Earth other than Sauron himself. I agree with your view of Tolkien's late retconn of Galadriel and Celeborn. It was like George Lucas's retconning the Cantina scene, to make Han Solo more decent. HAN SHOT FIRST!! The original story makes more sense contextually with the redemption story arc I am anticipating in your second video. Great video Matt!
My boy at it again with the the lotr vids. My six old daughter hasn't had to complain about me listening to the dorklords again at bed time for a little while lol As many characters in the books are really just ciphers, galadriel is easily one of most fleshed out and fully realized characters in these works
Happy to oblige, Humble Gamer! One of the things I learned from my research is that Galadriel's importance grew over time, as Tolkien became more and more fascinated by the character.
Hail Krystian! As for Ingwe, I don't think we have enough info, but he certainly could be the most powerful - we need a Silmarillion for the Vanyar! 🙂 as for Galadriel v Feanor, I'd give Galadriel the edge. Yes, Feanor was a better inventor/craftsman, but Tolkien says those two were the greatest of the Noldor, and adds that Galadriel had more wisdom: “Galadriel was the greatest of the Noldor, except Fëanor maybe, though she was wiser than he, and her wisdom increased with the long years.”
@@DorkLords I feel I continually draw on that quote when people ask me about Elrond and Glorfindel and why Lorien was so scary to many... She and Glorfindel when Frodo “sees him” are my two favorite elves in the trilogy. And she transcends the trilogy as one of my favorites in the legendarily.
hi hows eveything did you see the teaser trailer of lord of the rings what you see galadriel doing in the trailer happen in the book going in the cave fighting a creature writing a horses
Hi Clement! I just finished an in-depth video with GirlNextGondor about the trailer, the promotional photos and the Vanity Fair article. I'll be posting it soon! I also thought it was Galadriel in the cave at first, but on second watch, it appears to be a male elf holding the torch. This is probably occurring during the elves' trek across the Helcaraxe.

Mood 4 Eva and Otherside. .With Mood ..Imagine a whole different cultural framework than the English countryside... Starting from a different framework, how might Rivendale be imagined? How might Galadriel or Elrond present themselves? With otherside... What if the Doom of Men was followed to the Otherside? How could Ainur and Eru's action be imagined outside of the Euro-centric model? I think... in Otherside there is a glimpse... I dare to think this creator hints at visions fantastic, real and social commentary as what Tolkien created... and she is not done yet... and in some respects shares an image as large as Galadriel..
Question? If Ilúvatar set the elves down in the East of Middle Earth, why did the Valar think it was ok to invite the elves to stay in Valinor? This seems contrary to Ilúvatars intent...... If Ilúvatar wanted the elves to be in Valinor wouldn't he have placed them there in the first place?
Great question, Highlander! I think you're right - Iluvatar intended for the elves to live in Middle-Earth, but the Valar decided they needed to protect the elves from the dangers of Middle-Earth. From the Silmarillion: “Then again the Valar were gathered in council, and they were divided in debate. For some, and of those Ulmo was the chief, held that the Quendi should be left free to walk as they would in Middle-earth... But the most part feared for the Quendi in the dangerous world amid the deceits of the starlit dusk; and they were filled moreover with the love of the beauty of the Elves and desired their fellowship. At the last, therefore, the Valar summoned the Quendi to Valinor, there to be gathered at the knees of the Powers in the light of the Trees for ever; and Mandos broke his silence, saying: ‘So it is doomed.’ From this summons came many woes that afterwards befell.”
Can't we see a video on morgoth and his marring the labours of the valar. His capture and then the theft of the silmarils the slaying of finwe The killing of the trees aided by ungoliant and feanor along with his ppl chasing after him splitting into 2 parties. The 1st event of elf slaying elf. Then the founding of so many grand elven cities and the many crimes that happened during the times of the akalabeth silmarillion. Then the sinking of beleriand. I don't mean a story on the silmarils. I would like a focused story on morgoth becoming melkor. Without this event. None of what came to be would of passed. I don't think many ppl fully understand the extent of the crimes that morgoth commited and when he proclaimed himself melkor you could argue his crimes were even worse.

Arnt the mountains north of Mordor named after Tolkien's wife ? Or one of the middle earth mountain ranges. ERED something or other ? I'm sure I read that somewhere before. Possibly part of the grey mountains or the mountains of ash. Haven't got my book to hand
Hey all,i was wandering about something,
Does post-4th age elves still hear about the world?
Elwe might be the most under rated elf. I mean we never mention his two Super Bowl championships.
Hilarious! I almost did an Elway pun during the video. 🙂
I think Cate Blanchett was the perfect cast for Galadriel, i couldn't think of anyone better than her.
She is a brilliant choice - the films are fortunate to feature her acting prowess.
@@DorkLords I also think Liv Tyler was the best choice for Arwen.
I love the "Han shot first" comparison - perfect! Thanks, Thomas!
@@DorkLords Han Shot First immediately came to mind!! I thought it might tickle

My boy at it again with the the lotr vids. My six old daughter hasn't had to complain about me listening to the dorklords again at bed time for a little while lol
As many characters in the books are really just ciphers, galadriel is easily one of most fleshed out and fully realized characters in these works
Happy to oblige, Humble Gamer! One of the things I learned from my research is that Galadriel's importance grew over time, as Tolkien became more and more fascinated by the character.
Hail Matt. Who do you think is the most powerful: Galadriel, Feanor or maybe Ingwe? 🤔
Hail Krystian! As for Ingwe, I don't think we have enough info, but he certainly could be the most powerful - we need a Silmarillion for the Vanyar! 🙂 as for Galadriel v Feanor, I'd give Galadriel the edge. Yes, Feanor was a better inventor/craftsman, but Tolkien says those two were the greatest of the Noldor, and adds that Galadriel had more wisdom:
“Galadriel was the greatest of the Noldor, except Fëanor maybe, though she was wiser than he, and her wisdom increased with the long years.”
@@DorkLords Thank You Sir
@@DorkLords I feel I continually draw on that quote when people ask me about Elrond and Glorfindel and why Lorien was so scary to many... She and Glorfindel when Frodo “sees him” are my two favorite elves in the trilogy. And she transcends the trilogy as one of my favorites in the legendarily.
@@integritymatters5114 Great point! Glorfindel and Galadriel separate themselves from all other elves by carrying that power from the West.
Better teachers than Melian? Uncle Morgoth can show you a thing or two!
In the Harry Potter crossover, he's the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.
Although Ms. Blanchett was very good, I did not think she was physically imposing enough to play Galadriel as described by Tolkien
She did do an amazing job - but I agree that she came off as a wise enchantress, as opposed to an Amazon, as Tolkien called the character.
@@DorkLords
Exactly.....Galadriel would be better portrayed by one of the bigger blonde Amazons from the Wonder Woman films.
@@phinehaselohim7111 I'm thinking a Charlize Theron....
So she really didn't need swords and staffs of the white council in that scene. But since they were offered, rude to say no. Such a lady.
So true! 🙂
hi hows eveything did you see the teaser trailer of lord of the rings what you see galadriel doing in the trailer happen in the book going in the cave fighting a creature writing a horses
I didn't know Led Zeppling is into lotr! Wow.

Matt of the Dork Lords,
It might sound fantastical, but I have limited internet access and freaking won't/can't do facebook and am trying to find an alternative to youtube I can access. So, until then I'm writing you here. BUT having said that I wonder if I could get you to look at, comment on - two of Beyonce's videos.
Wow - thanks for the recommendations, Ben! I will watch these videos thru a Tolkien lens.
Great video as always! Only butchered my name but its okay😂
Bah! So sorry, Julian. For future reference, how is thine name pronounced?

From the Silmarillion:
“Then again the Valar were gathered in council, and they were divided in debate. At the last, therefore, the Valar summoned the Quendi to Valinor, there to be gathered at the knees of the Powers in the light of the Trees for ever; and Mandos broke his silence, saying: ‘So it is doomed.’ From this summons came many woes that afterwards befell.”
oooOOOooohh! That's a good question!!!
@@DorkLords oooOOOooohh! Good answer!
@@PleaseNThankYou Hee hee! Thanks, Gigi!
@@DorkLords Never invite Mandos to a party!
Great suggestion! As it happens, I recorded a couple of videos about Melkor/Morgoth. Here is the first video: ua-cam.com/video/C51gOECMahs/v-deo.html
