    Most comprehensive video on the MS-20 I've ever seen! Outstanding Ra.
    Never heard the original two side-by-side so that was awesome too. Can hear the difference, but like them both.

      Thanks Alex :) This one took ages to be comprehensive but such a rewarding experience with these legendary machines!

      @Alex Ball - It's serendipitous you're here Alex, because right after I started watching the video, I thought of you based on the style of the intro portion. Then I scroll down, and see your comment, lol.
      I'll tell you what though: This video & walk-through is incredible! And considering the amount of time he must have spent putting this together, with after a year & a half only have 13k plus views, and his channel (as of right now) only 6.41k subs; he deserves WELL more than that. Stellar content, 100%!

      @@madFame Simply fantastic video! Comprehensive is certainly the most apt way of explaining this walk-through with a few tips & tricks thrown in, and other tidbits of information. I subbed to your channel after the first few minutes of the video. I'm always on the lookout for more Synth & Analog related content. I simply wish a channel like yours had more exposure. You deserve it! Maybe Alex could do a feature of you on his channel, and get some subs flowing your way ;) He's experienced a massive following increase the last year+ himself (also well deserved just by his brilliant Documentary videos alone!).
      Cheers!

      @Human Being! I'm glad you like the content and the presentation format. I had conceived Synth Quest as a cross between an unboxing, overview, and history. I thought of it mainly for those who may have never tried these synths before and also to celebrate the machines and the engineers that made them.
      I make videos about synths the way I want to see them, so its great that other viewers like you can enjoy this style of content too!
      I reached out to Alex years ago after seeing a fantastic music video he did with the DX7. We spoke a while after about a multi-synth video collaboration with many others, which then turned into the Roland doco he made. My parts are the Juno 106, DR-55, DDR-30 and R-8.
      Now you know! :D

      @mysynths andstuff Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I always wanted to see an in-depth video comparing both of these versions but could never find one. Decided to do it myself. I borrowed these MS20s and was lucky to buy the Rev2 after filming. One of the best analog-mono's ever.

    39:54 There was also the MS-20M (Module) released at the same time as the Kit. It added a lot of new functionality.

    • @madFame
      @madFame  4 роки тому +5

      Yeah, I wish Korg added those MS-20M features to their MS-20 full-size re-issues. Seems a shame that they just released pre-assembled MS-20 kits in different colours.

    • @epicon6
      @epicon6 4 роки тому +1

      @@madFame I think it's good that they keep the full size ones original because the module version adds a bunch of knobs and everything but i wish they still sold the module version. The full size versions are sold for a limited time (not as limited as the Kit version but still limited), so they seem to make the full size versions only for collectors who want to purchase it as close to original as possible.

    Very interesting to see that both revisions have a SCREW above the VCA diagram. I'm sure you opened both synths to verify that indeed they are as you say. I know it is impossible to determine which filter each synth comes with unless you take an inside look. Great vid !!! THANKS :)

    Great Video madFame, thank you. I noticed both of your MS-20s have the screw above the VCA. I had thought this was an indicator of the later filter?

    • @madFame
      @madFame  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching! Early production version 1s have no screw, but late production Version 1s do. So MS20s with the screw could be either V1 or V2. The only way to know for sure is to remove side panel and look at the pcb. I think I show this at the end of the video.

    • @madFame
      @madFame  5 років тому

      Hi Tedd, thanks for watching and yes I would love to get some Sequential on Synth Quest! BUT I don't have any :(
      The US classics (Sequential, Oberheim, Buchla etc) weren't as common in New Zealand and so I will have to continue the search. I was lucky to get the LinnDrum and Syndrum so they featured early. I'm thinking of doing another series with more modern stuff but it's all about time and money unfortunately. Maybe one of these companies may like to throw something my way? :P

  • @lqr824

    I have to admit I thought these things were toys before watching this. Even a single one, I have to admit, does at least a couple things my Mono/Poly and Minimoog don't. As to two? Yes, excellent sounds, and some of them capture the ferocity of a Mono/Poly lead. Others just strike the ear as two simple sounds layered, not a bad thing in itself, but it's definitely a different effect.
    So, I guess my point is that if you loved the MS-20 or even DUAL MS-20 sound, you might want to look at the four-oscillator, 2-LFO, 2-envelope Mono/Poly which can do some of the same things (and many other musically useful things!).
    I play my Mono/Poly and Minimoog via a Kenton PRO-4 MIDI to CV convertor. In addition to the obvious mapping of pitch and note on/off, it allows mapping of other MIDI controls (including velocity) to extra control voltage outputs, that can be connected to these monosynth's VCF and VCA inputs, making these little dinosaurs from the 70s be VELOCITY SENSITIVE as well, without modification. Since each is so terminally phat on their own, I actually haven't bothered layering them, but surely will work on getting good sounds that way at some point. (Technically speaking it's zero challenge: just set the Kenton to map the same input channel to both synths. Currently I have my master keyboard split with bass keys going to the Moog and treble keys playing the Korg.)

      @@madFame Well I got quite a familiar tickle out of watching you fiddle with those noisy knobs! Man, and those long, plasticky keys. I predominantly used it for bass since the actual instrument I had at the time was an unplayable old Kay. And Sound effects for videos. And I did a really nice cover of some Stomu Yamash'ta stuff his from "Sea and Sky" release - hard that but it was an exercise in discovering how far I could push it. Fun stuff!
