one can tell that she is truly enjoying herself here, especially when she ascends the final scale in the last part of the video, she looks full of joy.

Bonisolli for all his vocal power cannot outsing Dame Joan Sutherland. Two incredible voices.

Absolute. heaven. Sutherland in her undiluted blazing prime. Love the 'mannered' Romantic acting too. Some people here don't know what they're talking about when opining about what 'bel canto' even is. The reason she's 'un-Verdian' to some is because they've heard singers all their lives not singing these early/middle Verdi roles accurately. This is the voice Verdi and Donizeti wrote for---a true dramatic coloratura soprano---Donizetti and Bellini were just as concerned with the 'dramatic' as Verdi. Many of the singers in Verdi's first casts were also the creators of roles for Donizetti---ma basta.

I think it would have been a real treat if Sutherland had performed this role in the 1960s. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but over the past fifty years this role has been designated to the spinto/dramatic soprano, when in actuality this entire opera was written in true bel canto style. I think Sutherland would have been stupendous in it, as usual!

Michael Brock this opera, tho, requires a good amount of low chest voice, which Sutherland didn't really have

She recorded it in the 1980s so a bit late in her career. I wish she could have recorded it in the 1960s or 1970s. I do not think there is a reference recording. I think Leontyne Price (whom I love) had the voice for it, but not the agility.

I stand correctly but I think Sutherland recording the entire role with Pavarotti in the mid - 1980's.

It is a dazzling aria but..,This opera is a total snooze bar when Elvira is a lyric of any kind. Joan is DULL in this role. She also did record it with Pavarotti when she totally past her prime and the whole thing was awful. Here it is pleasant and full accurate but the tone is dull and moony.

She was the ne plus ultra in these early years. Tosses it off like Happy Birthday while so many current singers can’t even manage the aria, let alone the cabaletta!

Sublime! Joanie's repertoire was huge but I do wish she had added more early Verdi. The Masnadieri was beautiful. An earlier Ernani and a few other treasures as well would have been perfection! Thank you for the video!

My only complaint is that every vowel sounds identical, and consonants are barely there. The complete opposite is her equal Victoria de los Angeles who was able to bring out every vowel color without compromising tone quality.

Her voice was so big I always wondered how she would do with the role of Aida. Especially in the triumphal scene that requires Aida
To sing above all the other singers as well as the orchestra and top it off with a high a. High E that Dame John could easily do.Something to think about in her prime. Richard bonynge would probably talk her out of it it was such a control freak LOL. Thank you for posting this beautiful piece. Sincerely Arnold Bourbon Amaral 🌿🌹🌝🌏🌎🌍

She's bel canto singer. G. Verdi is bel canto period composer, so, she's Verdian 😉

No Verdi is different from Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini, He is certainly not confined to be a bel canto composer.. He introduces a bit of verismo in his music, more drama. more realism and a more juicy soprano voice.. Just consider the way he wanted Lady Macbeth to sing.

@@stenjerdenius1683 She isn't a Verdian soprano to me, for a variety of reasons, but in most of Verdi's more florid music, no one could equal her results. In this piece, Sempre Libera (Traviata) Caro nome (Rigoletto) and Carlo Vive (I masnadieri) she has no equal.

@@stenjerdenius1683Have you ever heard her sing "Santo di Patria?" It's one of the greatest, if not the greatest, performance by a soprano of any of Verdi's aria. No other soprano has come close to equalling it. It's on UA-cam.

@@stenjerdenius1683 Verdi's roots are bel canto--he was trained in that tradition. How can you look at the score of Leonora's aria scena (Trovatore), with all the runs and trills, and say it's not bel canto? Certainly many "Verdi" sopranos can't begin to sing what Verdi wrote, but that doesn't mean it's right or real Verdi. This aria from Ernani, for instance: I had only every heard Sutherland or Price sing it, and then when I heard some "Verdi" sopranos hack their way through, slowing down the tempo at any difficult sections, I was outraged....how could they have been cast in such a role, when they could not meet the demands of the music, all the demands? Being a Verdi soprano is not just about the color or size of the voice. btw, all of that being said, Sutherland HAD IT ALL!
