Your videos are great. In fact they are the only instructions/demonstrations for making/replacing braided cord necklaces, that I have been able to find. I think it is important to watch the first one (with the pen) to see how the whipping is done - and you do point that out. After seeing that video, the other demonstrations with the 1mm cord, are easier to understand. I have a beautiful pounamu pendant that was given to me when I was in NZ - it means a lot to me but the cord needs replacing. I will give it a go. Thank you for generously sharing so much of your craft.
Great video! I've been wondering how to save my pieces from holes, I was a little overwhelmed by the thought of lashing ,now it seems doable. Thanks for making this video
I can’t thank you enough! We couldn’t find anyone here in the UK to re tie my sons Hei Toki so I’ve given it a try with your help! It’s taken all day but I’m pretty chuffed with myself for a first attempt 🙌 wish I could send you a photo!
I'm an artisan in Seattle area and I just started watching your videos and they have been very helpful to me and thank you brother cueda cueda. Send me a link and I'll send you so.e pics of my peices.
Great tutorial! I have some raw black tourmaline stone that has no hole and is rough in texture with no indentations. I was wondering if it would be possible to use this technique given. Also, what type of cord are you using. It is obviously strong, but looks nice as well. Thanks!
For the necklace cord I go about half a meter before plaiting. For the lashing cord you need to do a quick lashing to get the length. Or check out my latest no hole toki lashing video updated, it has a different pull through method that means you don't need the length for the lashing cord.
You can use a similair method, I think there are more techniques available though. I have only ever done one and just made that one up. Further research would be needed. The toki I did is on my website, campbellcarving.co.nz
Bought a pounamu for my son, the binding or lashing came undone on the first day! Have been trying to tie it back for months so he can wear it but it just won’t stay 😖 I’ve watched heaps of videos and tried every week for hours. It just won’t stay in the grooves. Such a shame the person we bought it off won’t fix it. Please help.
Yes to the 3 string s folded in half, these become the 3 plait for the necklace. The other part is the whipping, have you seen the whipping viceo to explain how that is done?
Campbell Carving Thank you for your reply. I haven't seen the whipping video. I am a beginner and not familiar with the terminology of what whipping means. Also does this mean that the answer is "no" to the one string folded in half in the opposite direction? Thanks so much
@@nhw8906 Not sure exactly on the 1 folded in half to start you may be correct. The whipping video is in the comments above or you can go straight to it here ua-cam.com/video/qxSSVp7J_Ck/v-deo.html
Useful tutorial, but as with all your other videos, could you pay more attention to keeping your hands in shot, particularly at the important moments where the visual is more informative than the verbal. Thanks
Ninja k i get most of my pounamu jade from New Zealand suppliers, i have got some from around the world too. I have a few items for sale in my shop you can see them here m.facebook.com/pg/campbellcarving/shop/ a lot of my work that i sell is by commission.
Campbell Carving ok will do. Im Native American. I been interested in Maori culture after i saw the film whale rider. I didnt know much about your tribe or New Zealand.
Not a black and white situation really. I think people mostly get pissed off with this when things that are significant cultural aspects such as designs are used in an unauthentic way to make money, without any appreciation of their whakapapa or what they actually signify. Doing it in a respectful way with good inte tiins to enhance the mana of Maori is perhaps not regardless of you race or colour.
so far watching i am more confused than what is was before i started watching , hands everywhere in the way, with no idea what wipping is , bad, stay away for tutorials,

Holy crap, that’s a lot harder to do than I expected 😂
Haha, getting it to sit right can be a challenge. I have made an updated one somewhere that has extra bits carved into it to make it sit easier.
Thankyou very much appreciate the sharing of your wisdom helped me alot
Welcome
Thank you so much! This was a awesome learning tool, very much appreciated
Hi just wondering how long the string has to be at the start when it's folded with six strands
I go for about 120cms then fold in half. That makes if big.
@@CampbellCarving thanks

Hey Rangatira, iv got one thats 1 pound in weight. How big do I need the Rope please
That's a big one, size is personal preference, I would still try lash with 1mm cord
Thank you for this video. Are you starting with 3 strings folded to make 6 strings? Thanks
Yes that is right.

I have no experience with that stone but I reckon its worth a try. I use 1mm waxed polyester cord.
Hello, can you tell me the measure of the cords, please.

Same principle applies to lashing to a toki handle??

Nice where did you buy your roll of cord?
Hi, I use the Zircon brand, 1mm black, that Caudwells.co.nz sell. Here is the link www.caudwell.co.nz/braid.htm
Where did you get the stone gem? Do you sell them?

How long are each of the 1mm cords before you start the whipping? Also, my stone has a small hole. How do I adapt to that? Thanks!
About a meter for the long lengths. I have another video that shows how to do it with the hole or you can just ignore the hole and lash over it.
i cant see anything,,,
Ok. Can you explain a bit more?
Just a pity quite a lot of the video is out of frame
This is propaply a dumb question but I’m white and if I made made stuff like this would it be considered cultural appropriation
