- Baritone Edward Nelson does double duty - singing and playing piano - in our latest Atrium Session offering: Noël Coward’s 1932 song “Mad About the Boy.”
Edward returns to the piano for a later Atrium Sessions performance of Kurt Weill’s “Here I Stay.” But he sees a parallel between this song and Weill’s.
“Both were masters of drawing the audience in, phrase by phrase, before striking the final, emotional blow,” says Edward. "From Weill, one gets earnest sentiments delivered in the most sincere fashion, and from Coward… the exact opposite!”
Edward, winner of the 2020 Glyndebourne Cup, brings a range of influences to his singing. “I was raised in Southern California on a steady diet of wide-ranging musical styles, from the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac to Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston - rock, pop, jazz with annual doses of classical music by way of summer concerts at the Hollywood Bowl.”
Stay tuned! The Atrium Sessions returns with Edward Nelson and his performance of “Here I Stay” soon. In the meantime, catch up with the series here: sfopera.com/atriumsessions #AtriumSessions

What a fabulous talent! he plays, he sings, he's artistic, he's handsome, he has tons of charm . . .
Oh my goodness- this is absolute heaven! What a superb artist! He even looks the part. Would love to see him live. He now joins Dame Shirley Bassey as my icons. As I’m from Guernsey, Channel Islands ( GB). I doubt I’ll ever see him live . Bravo.
BRAVO!
I love this!
Great interpretation, beautiful voice!🎶💝 Great listening pleasure🤩. (Glad you sang the full version)
Yes. Excellent. The song was clearly about Douglas Fairbanks Jr. There's speculation about other actors but really all the clues in the lyrics point to Douglas Jr.
Grows to an intensity that would have terrified Coward - brilliant!
😍😍👏🏻👏🏻
Definitive interpretation of a gay text, by a gay man who has a glorious voice. Love it.
