You don’t pay alimony for hitting someone with a car. You pay compensation for that. Alimony is what one spouse pays to another spouse when they divorce. Who pays and who gets paid depends on the circumstances. If you are going to write these stories and submit them for an American audience, do some research.
It might just be a translation issue. Or it could be that's what they call it where they are from. Everything doesn't have to be Americanised. You knew what they were talking about. Just go with it. It's really not that deep.
