The best improvised acting I've ever seen, especially considering the Dr is actually a real doctor and not an actor. Also the only film I know where the antihero freely admits to having sex with an underage 15 year old.
Agreed. Nicholson getting all the accolades on this scene, and he deserves them but so does the other actor. Superbly captured scene. Let the camera roll and capture the stuff that happens.

@lewisgreen2957 I don't put that much thought into why Doc mentions the penitentiary. I just think it's hilarious imagining mcmurphy fighting and bird doggin' dudes in prison!! 😂
Well, that's a middle aged man justifying of why him having sex with a fifteen year old was perfectly okay because of the way her vagina looked. How comfortable exactly does that make you?
I saw an interview with the real doctor in this scene (who wasn’t a professional actor). He mentioned that Nicholson gave him some acting tips for this scene, one of which was to not let your eyes wander when the camera was on you, and to follow his (Jack’s) eyes.
1976, we had Jaws and we had One Flew Over. I saw Jaws and it was OK for the time but during the movie, we saw an ad for One Flew Over, and I knew that this would be a powerful film. Could not wait to see it and it did not disappoint. Left Jaws for dead.
It's possible but unlikely. With the mores of today, filmmakers will not have the boldness, the free independent thought. The 1970' s were arguably the greatest decade for American cinema.
I remember seeing this in the theater in '75 and when Jack hit that imaginary fly and I saw the doctor's reaction, I thought to myself, " This is improvised! " Turns out I was right. What people have to know or understand is the doctors and nurses within these institutional settings are more in need of psychiatric help than the patients themselves in most cases you will find

He’s a textbook case study in antisocial personality disorder, and the psychologist’s clinical expertise here is excellent. They are both putting on a facade to get the info they need, but McMurphy’s motivation is selfish; the psychologist is focused on proper diagnosis/level of care assessment. When I watch this scene I do not know weather I'm watching Jack Nicholson playing Randolph Patrick McMurphy, or else Jack Nicholson playing himself. It doesn't matter, either way, cause the result is equally brilliant. The whole thing is so well acted and in such a naturalistic fashion that it could well be an actual recorded interview between doctor and patient had we not been familiar with Mr. Nicholson as an actor in the first place. Thank you for posting.
Ken Keesy was all these things McMurphy went to the crazy farm for, yet he became a millionaire. The story is a classic statement of what it means to be a free man in the time it was written and made into a movie staring Jack and Will Samson. A friggin' classic!!
Watching this exchange only reinforces my belief that Jack is the #1 actor of all time. I was only hoping he’d get back in the movies, but seeing late images of him has cast a doubt. Old Father Time has taken a toll. Just sad.
"They think.....they think..." "Do I look like that kind of guy doc?'" greta dialogue, great acting. This film highlights the debate on The Myth of Mental Illness of Those Szasz and the ani-psychiatry mouvement.
There is a distinction to be made between mental illness and insanity. Insanity is being unaware of one's surroundings lacking the intelligence to understand criminal responsibility. McMurphy shows symptoms of Anti-Social Personality Dusorder, but clearly demonstrates awareness of his actions, if not impulsivity, recklessness, and a lack of empathy to his victims. He may benefit from properly designed treatment.
@@brettknoss486 Agreed. Mcmurphy us pretty smart. He knows how to swindle the doctor into thinking that he is mentally unstable and needs to be put in the hospital to avoid going to jail. He starts off the conversation by talking about a photo of the fish the doctor caught. Then, he starts droning on and on about his thought process regarding his felonies and then mentions that he is no crazier than anyone else.
