In light to the salem witch trials, women were thought of as witches. Shakespeare wrote to an audience who had this sort of mindset where they thought of women (witches) to be harbinger of sorrow and misery.
Which is why we can also see that Hecate, the chief evil-doer was also a woman.
Shakespeare wrote his plays usually to appeal to his audience and was indifferent to ideas that might in that sense steer away his audience (if he showed a wizard prophesying and telling Macbeth, people would've frowned upon that.
The entire sisterhood thing, in my opinion adds air to the patriarchal sense where women together would bring about the downfall of men in general which is why it was always showed in a dark sense.
In the olden days, I don't think people liked to see women in power (much has changed today, but just much and there's still thay mind set present)
Personally, i really like Lady Macbeth amidst all the main female characters from Shakespeare's play. She's such a strong woman, anr possess great qualities like ambition, determination, will-power that even her husband, a courageous man does not have. I do not in any case justify her actions, but I feel like potrayinh Lady Macbeth as an evil character here is somehow also portraying characteristics like strength, determination and will power in women also evil.
So I believe that people at that time believed that women in power in those mediaeval times was intimidating to them especially for men and so they criticized and shadowed these powerful qualities as the root of evil.
Mary I of England, who was the first women to role England is also tagged as a Murderous monster in history.
Finally, Shakespeare may or may not have hinted at Lady Macbeth being the fourth witch. But i believe otherwise because had she been a witch, she wouldn't have otherwise turn delirious by the end of the play and taken her own life. We also see cracks of compassion and apathy in her at time during the play even if she had called upon the evil forces to 'unsex' her.
Her character in that sense in similar to Macbeth, as it is in throughout the play, and they both are really portrayed to be equal, in downfall, in glory, in the primrose path, and in death. The partners of greatness and downfall.

I think that women are represented as the evil doers, because in the Jacobean era (when Shakespeare wrote Macbeth) it was believed that women were the causes of the downfall of man. Relating to the well known genesis story, in the garden of Eden, Eve entices Adam to sin, and this causes the rest of mankind to be damned to the earth. The Jacobean audience was very much religious, so the belief that women were lesser than a man was widespread. And women were treated as inferiors. The rejection of women in society could be the cause of the witches' seclusion. And their tendancy to be evil, as it is what society believes them to be. Shakespeare fulfils the conventions and beliefs of his audience in order to gain their interest.

In Macbeth , yes. But Hecate is more than a witch. She is like a guardian for them

@@smitarahaman8430 if it is asked in a short answer type question or in an interview you can say that shakespeare never used the word witches. He introduces three weird sisters and later their mistress who is apparently a part of this evil cult. However, if you get this question in multiple choice pattern then pay attention to the question. This question should use the word weird sisters and not witches. So then you can safely say 3. And even if they use the word witches it is safer to say three because shakespeare does not refer to Hecate as a witch at all. I hope this never comes as an mcq because it is not a definitive answer at all.

From the very beginning of our life, we grow up observing that there are many restrictions for women in society rather than men. Even when at present women are as equal in position to men, still in our everyday life we face many such affairs where we can distinguish the treatment a woman gets in society. This has created an image in the mind of the people. It is no less evident in literature also that the social roles of women are more restricted than the role of men. Therefore, as we all know that early literature is mostly written by men, and these patriarchal beliefs made them evilly represent the characters of women. These characters can be exploited, destroyed, possessed, controlled, and so on. Shakespeare was writing in a similar society where these beliefs were more strongly agreed to. So, he was no outsider among them. He, just like his ancestors or predecessors represented them as evil spirits.
Again we cannot ignore the fact that maybe he wanted to make a point against all these social beliefs by representing Macbeth's ambitious evil nature avobe all where Macbeth needed no inspiration from Lady Macbeth to kill one by one or he wanted to kill Banquo's son to discard the prophecy of the Weird Sisters.

It looks like there is a distinct possibility Hecate is saying Macbeth is one of her own, like the Weird Sisters
True, she says "a wayward son" and not "my wayward son," but in Holinshed's history the Weird Sisters are the Wayward Sisters. Hecate also talks about Macbeth's lack of love for the Sisters as if there *should* be love there. And while the Sisters are women and Macbeth is a man, Banquo points out the Sisters have beards, Hecate is referred to as "him" by Macbeth and "our master" rather than "our mistress" by the Sisters, and there is the theme of gender roles and gender expression all throughout the interactions of Macbeth and his wife, to the point where Macbeth's iambic pentameter lines have an extra syllable to make them "Feminine" while Lady Macbeth uses the standard "Masculine" syllable count. Add the rhyming, and I think I could make a fairly convincing case that Macbeth is at the very least "claimed" by Hecate.
