Yo I see u were at cannery row in the intro. There's a vw cruise from gilroy to monterey on May 8th if ur interested
If it’s made by empi….or comes in a blister pack…walk away.
Just put the correct parts on it.
Look….we the audience…..aren’t making you eat mud, and nuts and bolts are we?
Right…..you eat…….food right, and drink water?
Why. Don’t you give this car the proper parts.
It will reward you with years of faithful service.
Been running cherry every since. Got to relieve the crank pressure someway. And this helped solve my problems with the leak. Every car is different so if your car don’t need it. Good on you bud👍🏽
Cover up the holes in the engine bay. Will prevent alot of heat
Thanks for the comment. Already got a tin for it. Just forgot to show y’all.
Stock motor doesn't need it. The stock filler with breather hose is fine.
Definitely helped to get some of the gunk out the motor. When I drain this it’s nasty and clumpy
The reason its spewing oil out the breather is because of the crappy air filter and breather set up. The breather should have a hose that plugs into the filter housing to suck air and fumes out of the crank-case when you open the throttle. A breather kit is usually required on dual-carb engines with a big-bore kit and a lumpy cam profile.
If there's "gunk" coming out of the motor I'd say you need a pump/oil filter combo setup.
find it hard to take VW advice from someone who leaves gaping holes in their engine tins…that’s VW 101. Don’t mean to rain on your parade, but bling won’t keep your engine from cooking itself.
All good my dude. You don’t got to take my advice. What works for me probably won’t work for you. Engine tin been replaced. Just had to wait for one without holes to come in
I'm in need of doing this same thing. My biggest criticism of this empi kit is the lack of barbs on the fittings. The fittings offered in the CB Performance kit have fittings that are barbed. I seen multiple complaints of hoses slipping off from guys who installed the EMPI kit.
Yeah it was a bit of an issue but I just made sure to give the hose plenty of space to move.
Love your account man, never find younger people rollin bugs. Im building my 64 right now, hopefully im on the road this summer!
You're not wrong about that man. I dont know anyone else around my age with any classic VW. I'm just trying to keep the spirit alive. And that's right bro. Getting the project all situated. Hope to see you rolling soon🙏💯
With all due respect you all are wasting time, got stuck on old material things, your treasure is where your heart is…
Nothing wrong with going on a nice drive. It’s good for the soul. Everybody got their escape. You got yours and I don’t judge you.
I like your positive attitude and approach, and the fact you’re wrenching and learning. That said, the use of this product shows a lack of knowledge of how VW crankcases breath.
Without the proper breather hose attached between the oil filler breather and carburetor air cleaner, most of your combustion gases in the crankcase are pushed out through the crankshaft opening where the fan belt pulley is attached. Some gases and oil spray will come out the oil filler breather also. There is no crankshaft pulley seal on these engines. The pulley has a spiral groove that assists in pushing the oil back in the case while it spins instead of the oil being thrown out when the engine is running. Otherwise the crankshaft pulley opening is a wide open area for oil and gas pressures. When set up properly, the intake system creates a negative pressure in the crankcase keeping the oil from coming out through the opening around the crankshaft pulley, and venting the crankcase gases to be burned through the intake.
The oil leaking around your valve covers is a separate matter. Always use new gaskets when removing and reinstalling the covers. Never reuse old gaskets. Install the new ones clean and dry, no rtv or glue. That will fix your leaks.
Keep on wrenching and learning.
Appreciate the insight man. I always looks forward to someone dropping som heat. However I have replaced the valve cover gasket multiple times. Not sure how that oil would end up top side when all the tins are in place.
Thanks for the info
Thanks good content 😂😂😂😂😂ur funni bud shouts from England 🇬🇧 its a good day to be alive 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
What’s a great day indeed !! Shoutout my people in the UK showing love !!🤝
Man, this is my first time in any of your videos. I just bought this same kit and I loved your content. It was really cool I felt like I was in Blood in Blood out movie 😁. Greetings from Queretaro Mexico bro.
That’s right man, it’s an easy install. You’ll be done in no time. Also I’m glad your digging the vibes bro. Just trying to spread some good energy and some classic car love.
You don’t if you have the right air cleaner on it.
You get that one wet and it will pass about as much air as a can of peaches.
Oh man I needed this vid. I just took a cruise with some VW folks on the freeway for a couple hours. When we pulled up to our location I noticed all speckled spots all over in and in certain spots in the engine compartment. I will be looking into this ASAP.
Why wouldn't you clean the entire valve covers, including the outside? It shows a lack of mechanical discipline. Also, you are missing the engine seal which keeps the heat of the exhaust from rising into the engine compartment and causing the engine to run hot. Additionally if you've dispensed with the heater boxes, then block off the fan housing tubes that would normally feed air through the air boxes. Additionally, the flat tin below the cylinders is essential to direct air to the cylinders to remote cooling. Remember, this is an air cooled engine which runs hot normally, an end depleting cooling capacity is problematic. Finally, any unused holes in the base tin should be blocked off.
ALL CRAZY !!
If you’re this upset about this video. I suggest you don’t even watch out air bag series. We hack up this poor car.
Really enjoyed your video. Exactly what I was looking for. Keep it up with the bug content.
Thanks man. Much love. Try to do some of the videos you don’t see out there. Glad this was helpful.
Great vid bro. I vent mine I had a catch can but I didn’t like it so I just vented both covers with a t and a little crank case filter works lol
I really don't like how the hose looks but it hoenstly works and keeps it clean so ill live with the hose being there. I'm glad you was able to find your own method to deal with this issue.
Those hose do the job don’t need nothing fancy to remove crank pressure lol good stuff man !
With excess pressure in crankcase sounds like head/ compression leaking into the crankcase
Start with compression checking the cylinders, should be minimum of about 100 psi no more than 15-20 psi deference from any of the cylinders, in thinking average is about 110-135, but point is if you have low compression on the cylinders it's blowing by into the crank case,
Also to add, you can do the dry compression test as above then also “wet” test which is drop a small amount of oil in each cylinder and run compression again. If numbers improve it’s your rings that need replacing as the oil is forming a seal. If numbers don’t improve its more likely a cracked head leading to compression loss
its spraying oil bc theres supposed to be a hose routing from oil filler to the air cleaner, which also keeps the carb running better, looks like an aftermarlket aircleaner is installed
You think these carbs need to have oil going through them ?? I thought it would be more beneficial to keep that junk out of there
@@tuned_tunas on the og air cleaners theres a sponge filter that should be lubed with oil to catch particles thus the auto lubing system from the case, or its like myne and an oil bath its not gonna harm anything later models put the paper element in which is prolly u need the breather, those things along with valve cover vents ate mainly for racing of dunebuggys
Not a bad way to spend an afternoon. Don't you think ??
Cool setup. My engine is a 1916cc twin port. As setup the crankcase pressure goes up from the oil filler neck to my right carburetor. The oil gets recycled by being burnt off. I should get one of these kits, good video. Check out my bug on my channel. I restored my 71 myself, doing a back to bare metal paintjob. I am thinking of putting coilover shocks in the front to give me more room for matching 17" rims up front.
Okay see you my dude. You got your own thing going with that beetle. I like your style. All about that low life
Thank you for posting this as I am having the same issue as you on my 1970 Beetle, I will consider doing this, thanks again. If anyone watching is near Seattle hit me up. Thank you.
This definitely helped me out. Wasn’t a 100% clean after but those are just some leaks from the alternator stand.
Well done I'm installing a breather kit in Bus , video was very helpful.
I like the splatter paint on your fan shroud and inside the deck lid.
I appreciate that. Glad you life it, but it might be time for a change…
Finally bug Stuff...
you Say to take the Time to Clean should have taken the 5min to Sand and Paint the Covers... ;)
I cleaned it off camera. Looks good still and sanding and painting would have taken me a whole afternoon to do bro. Lets be realistic on them 5 min. Took ne longer then that jjst to clean all the grime off them.
@@tuned_tunas a Good D.A and 80G sandpaper done in 2 mins each and a Min to put the First Primer coat on..
even Hand sanding would take 10mins a Side..
Did it work?
@@tuned_tunas Thanks.
I’m just wondering, how to get the pipe work down onto the rocker covers,on a bus.Not sure that drilling holes in it ,is a good idea, tbh.
Keep up the positivity mate. Good work on the video 👍
I appreciate that man. Just want to vibe with y’all for a few minutes. Work on cars a little. It’s a good time.
Is this any good for a bus, please?
I do not own one. But don’t see how it would do any hard. Only upsides here.
The cam/crank timing gears are a big reason why there's so much oil spray out of that breather. In the type 4s they fixed that by adding baffles casted into the case. I've been debating on putting pcv valves on, and getting an actual seal for the crank pulley.
But where is all the oil spray coming from ?? I have a crank pulley seal as well. But it’s always somehow dirty.
@@tuned_tunas You know that's a good question that I don't have an exact answer to. Since you have that crank pulley seal, you could do positive crankcase ventilation, without having to worry about sucking in sand there. Maybe drilling another hole into the breather box, routing it to the intake, with some pcv valves, MIGHT fix it? Then you could RTV the breather box lid, and it would be a closed system. Honestly I'm not a professional engineer, there's probably a science to sizing and location of the PCV valves, and also where to route that into the intake.
Do you know if the oil deflector is under the alternator/generator stand? maybe it's facing the wrong way 180 degrees, and allowing that oil that comes off the cam/crank gears to sling right up through the stand.
Something I learned from doing A/C repair, you can get UV dye and inject it into the system, run it a bit, and then shine around with a black light looking for something glowing. That might be a way to try to pinpoint where the mist is coming from in your situation.
It could also be the oil cap gaskets/seals, but I feel like you would've already checked those.
Thank you for all the helpful tips. A lot of good information in there. Ima take a look at my options and see what I can do. I sincerely appreciate your comment🙏🏽
New subby, yo what year bug?
@@tuned_tunas nice, I love your enthusiasm. Be blessed, I'll start binging your vids brotha. I have a 71 Super.
Good install. A breather box vents built up pressure from the crankcase and can save you some headaches from oil leaks.
If the hoses at the catch can are soft and collapsed can that cause any engine drivability issues
I need to do something like this once I get to the stage were I can work on the engine.. I rune duel carbs so I'm thinking of venting to them.
My dad has the same exact set up on his dual carb motor. Has been working great for his bug. Not a bad way to spent 50 bucks.
@@tuned_tunas I noticed you're both missing tin too and fanshroud tubing. I'm thinking venting to the carbs maybe neater
My bug isn't missing any tin. It just doesn't have the heater tubes since my empi exhaust doesn't run one.
@@tuned_tunas @1:35 you can see the lower tins that sit infront of the fins of the heads are missing. And the holes will allow hot air from the exhaust into the engine bay.
You right about those lower tins missing. Didn't even know they had em. And I've had this point brought up already. But I dont think hot air would come into the engine bay. The air under the car is under low pressure, and air goes to the path of least resistance. So wouldn't the hot air just go out the back ?? Its more work for it to have to travel through those small holes into the engine bay
Great addition sir , bug looking well good, seat belt emblem making them look like new 👍
Thanks man I really appreciate it. Its all in the small details. About to add some more chrome today😋
@@tuned_tunas nice I just bought another bug 2 days ago to add to my other 19 bugs in the U.K. . But check out my black/gold bug I’ve had it a month and it’s saweet !! Good luck really enjoy your work abd vids
Sheesh thats a lot of of bugs. I'll make sure to check it out bro. Thanks for the comment🙏
Nice bugs, dude!
Quick question. Did that solution actually solved your problems? Thanks in advance.
Greetings from Brazil. '71 1500.
It definitely kept my engine bay a lot cleaner. No crazy residue buildup anywhere.
I just got a baja bug and it's my first time ever working on a carb engine. very thankfull i found you hermano!! leaning a lot from your bug content so keep it coming !!
Congrats on the Baja bug !! We are turning my dads into a Baja bug as well. I’m glad you’re learning as you got my friend. That’s how I learned as well. Here we learn together🙏🏽💯
