- Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and a group of officials have died as a helicopter carrying them crashed in a mountainous area bordering Azerbaijan. The accident took place due to bad weather, when the delegation was returning to Tehran after a visit to the site of a dam project executed by the two countries. Raisi took over as President in 2021 and was widely seen as a successor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber has been named the interim president and, according to the constitution, presidential polls will have to be conducted in the next 50 days.

The helicopter that transported Raisi and crashed was American, not Russian. Had Iran updated its helicopter fleet with state-of-the-art Russian helicopters, this would most likely not have happened...
