We pulled out all the stops to enable repairability: parts, schematics, guides, and an easily serviceable design. If we were scoring this product, we'd score it very highly. But that's not fair. We're biased. We made it, and we just aren't a fair or neutral arbiter of a repairability score for our own product. So: what do you think? We value the opinions of the reviewers like Tom Nardi and Josh Hendrickson. We'd love to hear what Hugh Jeffreys thinks about it. Please, score away. We'll take our lumps. If there are areas we fall short, we want to hear about it.
It reminds me of Park tools in more ways than one, very high price tag for a very high quality tool, only justifiable if you use it a lot or just want something really nice.
I thought the same thing. There is something catching light on the bottom side of the USB C socket so I’m wondering if it has a lock somewhat similar to old iPod cables.
The Pinecil is an excellent device backed by a lot of documentation. We're big fans and several of our colleagues have (at least) one! Our soldering solution is more expensive but does bring some other things to the table. For an apples to apples comparison, the Smart Soldering Iron is a 100W iron for $80, offers tool-free tip replacement, built in safety features, sub-5 second soldering readiness, and supports our mission to promote right to repair: www.ifixit.com/products/fixhub-power-series-smart-soldering-iron. At the end of the day, there is no one size fits all solution. Everyone will choose a product based on need and budget. You do you!
I feel like the board should have been separate from the battery pack in it's own case so you could just plug a battery pack etc into a the board box, which you then control the soldering iron with, as is being forced to buy a battery pack with a limited life span is counter productive and just makes the item far more expensive
The iron has a webinterface where you can control everything as far as I know. So if you have everything you need for soldering at home, just buy the iron itself without the rest, they sell it standalone.
Yeah but that means if you are soldering something and want to change the temp, you have to stop what you’re doing, connect it to a pc, change the temp, take it back to your work, hook it back up and then get back to work. I’ll stick to my fnirsi that actually puts out 100w and a krisdonia power bank.
@@bobweiram6321for me I think the value here is the storage and portability. I don’t have a dedicated work station, and this could sit in a closet instead of a desk in a garage, all wrapped up in one neat bundle.
I would have liked it a bit more if it followed some of the choices made for the Miniware TS101 and Pinecil irons, mainly by having temp controls and display on the iron itself, it's not a big thing but it does provide extra options if you don't want to use the battery bank
This looks great but for $300 sadly I'll have to skip! Too much for my poor little wallet but I hope it sells well and maybe in the future I will get one.
It would be a pretty good deal at 299 AUD considering a Ryobi 18v one with battery and charger would be 228 AUD. The real problem is $299 is the USD price, making it almost $500 AUD
No. It makes more sense to get a kit like this if you planned, or dont plan as it were, to repair anything and everything you can get that soldering iron on.
Non-standard li-ion pack? No thanks. You missed an opportunity by not using standard li-ion cells. I don't want to depend on you producing this battery for the next 20 years.
What about it makes you think it's non-standard? It looks like a pretty standard battery pack with a standard connector. It's just got their branding on it.
@@soviut303 to me, a standard battery is a 18650 or similar, where I can one/multiple as needed, by any local or online store. This battery pack is not something I can buy anywhere, any time.
$300 is a lot, but this iron clearly isn't for everyone. Not everyone needs a portable soldering iron, much cheaper stationary stations are available. Y'all are complaining like this is the only soldering iron in the universe and it's ridiculous.
"Wow, this looks really gre.... **sees price** oh, oh well." I am also struggling to understand how this would work off a standard battery pack when all the adjustments seem to happen on the proprietary one that's part of the product itself, and not on the iron. Some really great ideas in this product, but some baffling ones as well--ones I think iFixit would goggle at confusingly if they were reviewing it as someone else's product. Anyway, I guess I'll just keep on using my trusty Pinecil.
Just get a Pinece v2! This is overpriced! And I work on many devices, the Pinecel v2 came out of nowhere and its amazing!! Best of all its on Amazon for $40, and you can use any external DP battery you like. Seriously ifixit this is price gouging???
$300? You might as well buy a lower end JBC or Metcal with infinitely better performance. There are also dozens of Chinese JBC knockoffs stations both portable and stationary you can buy for 1/2 to a third of its price.
grab a heat gun, duct tape it to a iron tip, and grab a industrial thermometer to control temps, then find the approx temps for solder, get flux, and try
What is the repairability score of this product ?
♾
I see Phillips screws, this is a good start
🤣🤣🤣

WOW $300.00. There are less cost battery operated Soldering Irons out there. And will a long time.

A great mains powered hakko soldering station costs less.
TS101 will be much cheaper
Cool, then get one.
literally nobody is forcing you to buy this.
This is the way I saw it exactly, @@lbgstzockt8493
do you have plans on open sourcing the electronics? atleast the schematic
Already open source. Repair manuals coming up
@@W00fer ohh, thank you. I will check them out
K but there is no locking connector on the power box end just usb c connection.
Is it not better to jank the connector out than let the box fall on the floor?
I thought the same thing. There is something catching light on the bottom side of the USB C socket so I’m wondering if it has a lock somewhat similar to old iPod cables.
it has a hot iron connected to it
If it was locked and you accidentally fling the station, the iron will also go hurdling at your face
£290? I'll stick to the pinecil
Where do you find the pinecil? In the uk?

Over-priced, proprietary tips, and a power indicator that doesn't accurately report power usage. I'll pass.

Can I adjust the temperature when using "any USB power source"? Because the knob is on the battery, not the iron itself
420 at 57 second mark. love you ifixit!
Yo Brett iFixit stuff kicks ass. Good work.
A very appealing tool !
Such an awesome product
Looks like a nice well made product.
Will there be a similar USB-C reflow heat gun that can plug into this simultaneously with the soldering iron
i fix it 10/10 with love❤
Great product 😍
You speak the best 😊
A pinecil v2 is Like 40 bucks…
How does the iron behave when plugged into a regular battery pack though?
How heat resistant is the cord?
Where is it made?

Can I buy the case for it separately? I like the case but didnt need all of the stuff that comes with the $300 kit. Love my fixhub so far 😁
How easy is it to repair? ;-)

Can we just agree that iFixit is the best? They don’t “hide” screws on their devices so they can be easily fixed (unlike Apple lmao)
Amazing guys
Damn, that's brilliant. I was born 50 years too early... 😮💨
@iFixit Please teardown the Oura Ring 4! It would be interesting to see if it's any better than the 3 (which was terrible)
Amazing! Does it require USB PD 3.1?

Nothing has been said about the tip itself. Which is the most important part of soldering irons.

My phone costs less than $300, so does it make any sense to buy a portable soldering iron which costs more than my phone, just to repair it?
No. It makes more sense to get a kit like this if you planned, or dont plan as it were, to repair anything and everything you can get that soldering iron on.
Do you have plans to make a Hot air station and microscope?
Alright, bet are open, how long 'till it run doom ?
How to buy in india
I can not remember anyone I follow on YT ever using F rather than C for temperatures even US based techs use C it is universal for soldering temps.

Very good for those who can solder; I, however, am not confident about soldering for repairs and/or mods.

using other soldering irons is also useful, this is for people who want high quality products and buy it once for life
