The UK decision to stay away from the EMU was correct. it is impossible to fight inflation and create unemployment with a single interest rate and currency. Most of the unemployment that exists in Southern Europe is because the countries over there cannot devalue, as they don't have their own money. Also, the charade of running a monetary union without a fiscal union goes against the Mundelein teachings as encapsulated in the Theory of OCA Optimum currency area. Many other problems exist, as a labour market movement alone won't help if the people do not speak a typical work/ professional language.
I agree completely, recently I discussed this with an ex-ECB economist who now agreed that it is not possible to fight individual business cycles of individual countries with the self same monetary unit.
