Luckyhat66 I see a bass in your hand. I'm also a bassist and Derrick Hodge is a close personal friend of mine. I would love to see and hear your playing
I study under Thundercat Stephen Bruner in high school and he has recently inspired me to pick up the bass again after putting it to the side to produce hip-hop and R&B for other artists. Time to get back to me.
This was candy for the ears! It was so enjoyable, it was over before I knew it. I believe the best feelings happen not for an extended time, but for a moment. Thank you for transcending time with this upload!
Terrance jones sr I feel the same way I came out of band practice yesterday and my guitar player was bumping Thundercat and knew from hearing the first note that this man had skill!!!
ornette coleman, funkadelic, eric dolphy, YES (weirdly but rightly.somehow squire and rick wakefielld simultaneously) some stan clarke, elp et al. amo amas amat
Argonautica8 i don't hear eric dolphy in his playing... thundercat isn't on that level.... he doesn't make those large intervallic leaps that dolphy did.
Argonautica8 i see what you mean... no one plays like him, when i think about it. I compared him to thundercat in that regard. The phrasing and urgency is similar.
Man Thundercat has some dope harmonies!!!! I wish he had background singers so we could hear them the same way as on the albums. Dope performance though
Thundercat's like Jaco-I'd love him to find a Joni Mitchell-type make some absolutely beautiful music for the ages. He's so musical on the sonic side, great chords and playing and a wonderful voice.
Does anybody know what envelope filter (or any other effects) Thundercat is using in this video? Although it's used nearly entirely throughout the set, it can be heard most prominently at 27:18.
Music for musicians. Though I consider myself a musician but more one who diggs the purity and scarceness of Questlove. Yes, he is a pioneer exploring new levels harmonically as well as instrumentally. Maybe I am just too tired right now to listen to it. Surely it is no musicyou can just play in the background. Highly demanding your attention. I will get back to it at another time. So...
I am ignorant when it come to instruments. How does he make the bass guitar sound like that? I don't know how else to really word that question. hopefully you get what i mean
it's a 6 string. it has a higher string and a lower. This allows a bassist to play chords and solo in the higher register in addition to grooving in the lower octave of the instrument.
Thundercat used to have a custom ibanez 4 string similar to this one. I think it was destroyed by an airline. Eventually he acquired this one from ibanez.
sometimes the music gets really intense. im used to really simple to understand repetitive melodies with catchy chourses. now i can see the complexity in what mr.thundercat is doing...however, i have trouble actually enjoying it. what do i do?i am tired of listening to the same BS pop on the radio, however, sometimes its nice to have a rythm.
If anybody has a chance to see this guy, please do. All it cost me was fifteen bucks, the ticket, the food, the gas and a 6-hour trip to San Diego. It was amazing. He even mingled with fans after the show outside the club.
+Eccentric Foxhole /ABSOLUTELY/ Best $15 ever spent and I have never witnessed as master a musician as he live. His vocals (not so much for this video but for the performance I attended) were perhaps better than his studio albums!!
Bro, Justin is soooo under recognized. I'm a huge Ron Bruner fan but Justin is just as sick and has a more unique style to me. It actually makes more sense that he's playing with Steven then Thomas. Not that Thomas is bad but Justin and Ron have similar styles.
Oh there are, trust me. I don't know where you're looking for. I like a lot of genres and styles, may I suggest one of my Playlists?, the Favorites'. Perhaps you might actually find something there.
Times are approximate: 00:00 Intro 00:30 Daylight 13:30 Tron Song 21:00 Fleer Ultra 27:15 Is it Love? / Mmm Hmmm (Flying Lotus) 39:30 DMT (Flying Lotus) / We'll Die 43:00 Seasons 50:20 Heartbreaks + Setbacks 55:20 Walkin' 1:00:00 Oh Sheit It's X 1:04:40 Lotus and the Jondy 1:10:35 Evangelion
Can barely hear the vocals :( & the softer moments, you can totally hear how much people are just chatting away in the audience as if they're just at some bar. Even at some of the band's most climactic moments, you can hear someone trying to talk over the music. What happened to common courtesy man.. This performance is so great!
But his dad and his big bro are time keepers too (Drummers) THE BRUNER FAMILY IS AWESOME since 1980's Shakeys Pizza's back in the dayz.. ooops I'm speaken tooooo long ago
R.. Mill they are awesome, saw Ronald Jr play with Steven when they were teens, they blew my mind, I think they got a younger bro who's a wizard on piano, seriously talented family
I bet this is just recorded with a portable Zoom recorder somewhere in the crowd or near the camera. Can't people be just happy with good music and people devoted to share it ?
Clearly the audio recording is from a mic---probably on a video camera--and not off the sound board... so you really don't have a good idea of what the mix was like. I'm guessing it probably sounded awesome though.
Good concert. I would have love to here some more of the chord changes and voicings but it was hard because Justin Brown all though a great drummer, was a tad busy in my opinion. there was a crash on every 1.
If anyone ever has an oportunity to see him live, TAKE IT! He was opening for FlyingLotus in Montreal, he walked up on stage wearing a wolf (or coyote) 's head as a hat and a fur cape and the craziest most colourful outfit lookin like a funk artist from the 70's or whatever they thought the future would look like back in the 80's. His music was accompanied with the craziest light show and they seemed to have had so much fun on stage
+Sands Kreative Verksted he uses the moogerfooger in combination with a boss sy-5 bass synthesizer at times. The moogerfooger is the top thing on my gear wish list right now
This man opened all sorts of eyes, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, he is dimension hopping at this point.
Thundercat, Hiatus Kiote, Robert Glasper, Snarky Puppy and Cory Henry. They have protected music's legacy. We're in great shape musically!!
Better performance.
Terence Jones, Sr Great list! Something tells me we have similar taste...
Luckyhat66 I see a bass in your hand. I'm also a bassist and Derrick Hodge is a close personal friend of mine. I would love to see and hear your playing
Terence Jones, Sr Fit The Reign of Kindo in there!
***** I'm definitely going to check that out!
that synth player toured with Allan Holdsworth for a little while, I want him to jam with thundercat and hear him solo over water on the brain.
I study under Thundercat Stephen Bruner in high school and he has recently inspired me to pick up the bass again after putting it to the side to produce hip-hop and R&B for other artists. Time to get back to me.
That's awesome! I am in the exact same position as you.
I'm happy I got to see him live. It was def an epic experience. Nothing beats live music.
Beautiful show. Thundercat just do what you do as long as you can. Keep the music alive and thank you!
A genius is among us..
Love this concert....Tnanks for post...🔥🔥🔥🖤🖤❤👍🏾👍🏾🎶🎶🎶
THUNDERCAT FOREVER
ornette coleman, funkadelic, eric dolphy, YES (weirdly but rightly.somehow squire and rick wakefielld simultaneously) some stan clarke, elp et al. amo amas amat
haha yeah man i hear the YES in there for sure.
Argonautica8 George Duke for days
Argonautica8 i don't hear eric dolphy in his playing... thundercat isn't on that level.... he doesn't make those large intervallic leaps that dolphy did.
the starts and stops of dolphy. disjointed yet having continuity. no one's on eric's level.
Argonautica8
i see what you mean... no one plays like him, when i think about it. I compared him to thundercat in that regard. The phrasing and urgency is similar.
adventure time before lotus and the jondi ...too cool
Just pure musical excellence.
The song you are looking for is at the one hour mark oh sheit it's x
The drumming is superb on tron song
Man Thundercat has some dope harmonies!!!! I wish he had background singers so we could hear them the same way as on the albums. Dope performance though
reminds me of George Duke's album 'Feel'
Great post. This is tight.
Seriously so good.
Holy hell! What a mind blowing performance!
why doesn't this have more views...?
+Austin Dean Cause people are too busy listening to commercial BS. Besides, Errthang ain't for Errbody.
I don't see his brother on the drums, but Ronald Bruner is pretty gifted himself.
Sung Ha Ronald is good, but this is Justin Brown on drums!
Awesome... A good vibe
50:00
Those couple people singing in the crowd though.
NICE
Qué chingonería!
Musicality, culled from the 60-70s...I can dig it, even though:
...I was born, in 1973 :0).
With you sayin "you can dig it" gave me a clue you were born in the 70's lol!
THOSE DRUMS THO
Dennis was going hamm on the keys
Thundercat's like Jaco-I'd love him to find a Joni Mitchell-type make some absolutely beautiful music for the ages. He's so musical on the sonic side, great chords and playing and a wonderful voice.
AGREED!
I feel like a FKA twigs, Flylo and Thundercat collab is a classic waiting to happen
holyfuckingwhateveryouwannacallit.... DAMN
He's sort of like George Duke but as a bassman
Yep. Finally saw him live. And thats what I was reminded of - George Duke and Stanley Clarke.
Exactly!!! You nailed the description for me.
That's because a lot of his arrangement come from George Duke
well check george and stanley clarke or george with frank zappa...those who know good music know the elements!!!
tony pache wait stanley jordan and george
his voice reminds me of johnny polygon when he sings
Does anybody know what envelope filter (or any other effects) Thundercat is using in this video? Although it's used nearly entirely throughout the set, it can be heard most prominently at 27:18.
Very Fucking Amazing!
Thundercat and The Philharmonik collaboration! Please!?
modeern day hendrix vibes for real
Come to Lisbon then...
Music for musicians. Though I consider myself a musician but more one who diggs the purity and scarceness of Questlove. A B his records are more produced and “chill” if that helps; his live sets are more wild like this one here for sure
I am ignorant when it come to instruments. How does he make the bass guitar sound like that? I don't know how else to really word that question. hopefully you get what i mean
Envelope filter pedal
Thank you! so that is all? that isn't an electric bass? or anything else?
Tom Foolery He just plays an extended range bass guitar
it's a 6 string. it has a higher string and a lower. This allows a bassist to play chords and solo in the higher register in addition to grooving in the lower octave of the instrument.
he has alot of effects...effect pedals on the floor...shape shifting stuff
what bass is that?
It's a custom ibanez artcore 6 with a full scale neck.
Juan Carlos Rojas
Like Jon said, tis a custom.
But look for Ibanez AG205
Thundercat used to have a custom ibanez 4 string similar to this one. I think it was destroyed by an airline. Eventually he acquired this one from ibanez.
sometimes the music gets really intense. im used to really simple to understand repetitive melodies with catchy chourses. now i can see the complexity in what mr.thundercat is doing...however, i have trouble actually enjoying it. what do i do?i am tired of listening to the same BS pop on the radio, however, sometimes its nice to have a rythm.
Just keep your ears, mind and heart open brother. And keep exploring
thank you! i will try!
You're not wrong. Some of the stuff this guy is doing is a little hard to digest, pretty far out there and kinda formless
Does anybody know which pedals he uses? Really curious about where he gets this unique sound from
It's the same as funk during the 70s
+White Peoples Tears helpful... It seems to be just a Boss SYB-5 effects pedal.
nasty. just nasty
allo thundercat
What's the song at 14:25?
+TribalQuester89 Tron Song
this guy is just so amazing... Ear candy. PS- 5 people are really stupid.
15:18 FILTHY
Lee Nuxunumo yessir! And the bass solo to follow is killer too
Can't believe all the people talking throughout this gig..... terrible.
no fucking shit, right?? drunken and loaded I'd still manage to keep my mouth shut and bathe in the sounds. so unnapreciative.
Shit
00:00:00 - 01:15:59
NASTY
I had to say it out loud too! "He's freaking jamming"
1:04:31 Adventure time theme song such a dope start to lotus and the jondy
If anybody has a chance to see this guy, please do. All it cost me was fifteen bucks, the ticket, the food, the gas and a 6-hour trip to San Diego. It was amazing. He even mingled with fans after the show outside the club.
+Eccentric Foxhole /ABSOLUTELY/ Best $15 ever spent and I have never witnessed as master a musician as he live. His vocals (not so much for this video but for the performance I attended) were perhaps better than his studio albums!!
He's coming to the small town of Groningen here in Holland, along with Knower, Herbie Hancock, BBNG and others. I'm definitely going!
Justin is killing those DRUMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
seen the videos with Austin? so damn good
Bro, Justin is soooo under recognized. I'm a huge Ron Bruner fan but Justin is just as sick and has a more unique style to me. It actually makes more sense that he's playing with Steven then Thomas. Not that Thomas is bad but Justin and Ron have similar styles.
Man and I almost lost hope in music. THUNDER THUNDER THUNDERCAT! HOOOOOOOOO!
i hear u brother andre..real music real musicians
andre p
Losing hope means you're not looking in the right places
Funkroza sure am, but there are barely any places left.
Oh there are, trust me.
I don't know where you're looking for.
I like a lot of genres and styles, may I suggest one of my Playlists?, the Favorites'.
Perhaps you might actually find something there.
andre p
Wait, that was by no means self-promotion.
I just like to share.

This is some of the most amazing music Ive heard!
Daylight played live never gets old.
Man, I couldn't agree more.
Daylight just does something to me.
annoying people talking over the music, just stay at home!
Exactly! Hate that shyt!
For real!! They aren't worthy
Ya Dam Right!
AbstractMan23 It's how this was recorded. Not the best,so the voices in audience are caught. Love me some Thundercat.
Bill Evans, live from the Village Vanguard, says, 'Get over it'.
did he just transition from the Adventure Time theme to Lotus and the Jondy? what a fucking hero
at what time?
@@JoePist0ne About the adventure one
This trio is absolutely insane! Some of the best musicians of our time.
Holy shit. I need to go home and practice. I think I just found my new favorite bassist.
I can't believe some of these people in the crowd who are talking, you have thundercat playin RIGHT in front of you, have some respect!
Yea, I was there.... Alot of drunk caucasians constantly woohooing unnecessarily and having full conversations. I was sooooooo PISSED!!!!!
@@terryflowers7837 hate those kind of people. ignorant idiots
Can barely hear the vocals :( & the softer moments, you can totally hear how much people are just chatting away in the audience as if they're just at some bar. Even at some of the band's most climactic moments, you can hear someone trying to talk over the music. What happened to common courtesy man.. This performance is so great!
if you guys like this check out Chon [:
Could Thundercat be the most gifted musician ever born?
Ever? No. But definitely one of the most gifted that I've heard in recent years.
jirky015 agree with you
But his dad and his big bro are time keepers too (Drummers) THE BRUNER FAMILY IS AWESOME since 1980's Shakeys Pizza's back in the dayz.. ooops I'm speaken tooooo long ago
R.. Mill they are awesome, saw Ronald Jr play with Steven when they were teens, they blew my mind, I think they got a younger bro who's a wizard on piano, seriously talented family
Prince wins that title :)
Protect this legend!!! I need to see him but broke right now! Working hard and saving for maybe some killer tickets next time around! 😭
That was amazing! I might get to see Thundercat next Saturday!
Love how he just sings the Adventure Time end theme right before "Lotus and the Jondy."
A modern day Weather Report - fusion is back ... Cool!
+Skinny Bob I was going to say Return to Forever but with no lead guitar.
Definitely my man, good call Love Weather Report with or without Jaco P.
Great performance. Suggestion: Hire another sound man.
Most likely crappy in house.
I bet this is just recorded with a portable Zoom recorder somewhere in the crowd or near the camera.
Can't people be just happy with good music and people devoted to share it ?
Thank you, @FSFBass. Someone gets it.
Clearly the audio recording is from a mic---probably on a video camera--and not off the sound board... so you really don't have a good idea of what the mix was like. I'm guessing it probably sounded awesome though.
pretty solid deduction from a youtube video...videos are exactly like really being there lol
Seeing Thundercat at The Independent in SF last year was one of the best things that've ever happened to me. This guy's amazing.
Such a great melodic player with immense technique. Mark my words: dude is going to steal the show during the Skrillex Superjam at Bonnaroo.
Good concert. I would have love to here some more of the chord changes and voicings but it was hard because Justin Brown all though a great drummer, was a tad busy in my opinion. there was a crash on every 1.

When the crowd shuts the fuck up because they're in absolute awe of this mans talent.
Amazing
I love his extatic look when playing the more intense parts. Now that's 'playing out of your mind'.
Creative, Authentic, nothing holding him back. Beautiful. Art.
HAHA He quotes Star Trek: The Next Generation just after 47:47. Awesome.
so can we all just admit that from 43.06 to 50.16 is the best part of this amazing show?
Keyboard dude is texting on minute 2:44 haha. Such wicked sound, so powerful but soulful at the same time.
where is the song tenfold?
Thundercat is such a genius
sound like hatfield and the north, very good!
+mistergamba80 that's spot on, and I love both
a rhythm guitar would really add a lot to this set ...the keys just don't seem to be enough,
however, i love Thundercat and anything he does!
had no idea he was such an apt musician....You are the man Stephen. To think all those glorious bass lines for Flying Lotus...
Ridiculously great concert! I look forward to backing this guy on keys one day soon! We are making some noise in Cincy ohio check us out!
oh my goodness heavens that a swell instrument he's got!
my brain explodes at 35:06
6:05 - 6:22 Close Encounters of a Third Kind 2019
Why would anybody not like this?
*Because they're dead inside...*
by the eye of thundera....
some songs sound like they are pure improvisation on the scene.
Great show and music BTW.
26:49 WHAT
Anybody knows what kind of effect pedals Bruner is using?
+Sands Kreative Verksted He's said it's a mooger fooger envelope filter
Thanks!
+Sands Kreative Verksted he uses the moogerfooger in combination with a boss sy-5 bass synthesizer at times. The moogerfooger is the top thing on my gear wish list right now
Mind altering.
Oh my god, Cat! That bass!!!
thundercat aka BASS HENDRIXS
47:50 star trek
Justin Brown!!!
