Battle Of Tours 732 AD : Animated Film

- The Battle of Tours, also called the Battle of Poitiers and, by Arab sources, the Battle of the Highway of the Martyrs (Arabic: معركة بلاط الشهداء, romanized: Maʿrakat Balāṭ ash-Shuhadā'),was fought on 10 October 732, and was an important battle during the Umayyad invasion of Gaul. It resulted in the victory for the Frankish and Aquitanian forces, led by Charles Martel, over the invading forces of the Umayyad Caliphate, led by Abdul Rahman Al-Ghafiqi, governor of al-Andalus.

Hey. I love your work. Well done. May I request the Napoleonic wars animation?
There are many inaccuracies in this video. First of all, Charles Martel was never the King of France, he was a Duke. It was the Merovingian dynasty that reigned with King Dagobert III and then Childeric II. Charle Martel spent 6 years in prison. He was released from prison to fight against the army of Al-Andalus. With his success, he put one of the last Merovingian kings, Thierry IV, in power. This dynasty died out a few years later, due to a lack of heirs. It was Charles Martel's son, Pepin the Short, who became the first king of the Carolingian Dynasty, of which Charlemagne was the most illustrious.
Finally, please put Carcassonne between Toulouse and Narbonne on the map. You put it in an inaccurate location that is the one of Montpellier.
The sight of Charles' quivering moustache was enough to inspire fear in the hearts of his enemy.
Terrifying indeed! thus spoke Pepin in Short 😉
"By Allah! He was able to quiver his moustache by sheer will!"
T'was a stiff breeze that ruffled the Royal stache.
Pfft! Abd Al-Rahman Ibn Abd Al-Ghafiqi was much scarier and mightier!
*Salamis, 480 BC... Poitiers, 732... Vienna, 1683... probably the Holy Trinity of "Save the West" battles.*
Remember the 4th one. *Chalons 451* Atilla's million strong army was stopped by the Romans, who had to ally with their worst enemies, all held together by one of their best generals ever.

Europe needs a new Charles Martel now...When I was in Toulouse a few years ago I was absolutely shocked by the number of Arabs in that town. It's absolute madness, it's going to end really badly.
True. They are an infestation of backwardness. Not just there but in a lot of other areas of Europe too like Germany and the UK.
Or you need a guillotine
Now they're being put up in hotels.
You nailed it. 🤷
That’s punishment for calling Irish, Scotts and Welsh uncivilised ?
Every Western country -including those not in Europe- should have statues of Charles Martel in every city center and in every capital. The man should be hailed as one of the West’s greatest heroes.
Nonsense. Thus was just a small raiding party. The real battle for Europe was fought at constantinople. The romans and bulgarians saved Europe. That was a huge army about 10x that of this one. Tervel should be the one with statues.
@@thatisme3thatisme38 He is right! this small raiding party like you called, conquered whole Spain. The defeat in Poitiers is the start of the stop of the islam charge in Europe. And what you calla small raiding party, well that muslim army was so about 30.000 men which I don't call small for that time. We are talking about 732 nd for that time 30 000 men is much! And about battle oif Constantinople are talking about because there are 2, one of 711 till 718 and in that the bulgarians have nothing to do, or the one of 1453 against Mehmet II in 1453 which Constantinopel lost and was also the end of Constantinopel and the Byzantine empire of better what was left of it.
@frankbarron1907 Exactly! As also for Godfroy de Bouillon with the first crusade 1095-1099 who conquered Jerusalem and was the defender of the Holy Grave
@@patrickdevries6267 no, it didn't. It took a handful of cities from a guy who ONLY ruled about half the kingdom. They were working for a bunch of guys in the OTHER half of the Kingdom who were at war with Roderic.
The only change in the plan was Roderic's side just surrendered way faster than anyone thought and the Arabs worried the mercs would set up their own state from from their domination and so THEN invaded.
Also Martel didn't save anyone.
It was Odo at the battle of Toulouse who stopped the invasion. :)
@@patrickdevries6267 its small. check what constantinople was besieged with...10x the size. if that was not stopped there would be no battle of tours. the arabs would just roll over the rest of europe.

Τhank you and welcome!
Beautiful presentation. Me? Well, I have a few issues... Martel didn't control all the Frankish lands. He was merely the Mayor of the Palace of one of the Merovingian kings. Odo was loyal to an entirely separate Merovingian King and when the two kings went to war (aka Martel caused the war to expand his territory) the result was Odo declaring independence from all Merovingian rule but specifically any Merovingian rule that had Martel involved in it.
This civil war took place at the exact same time as the Visigothic Civil War, and it is very clear Odo sided with the younger brother of the deposed King. It was also clear he was involved in the anti-Roderic alliance that saw the entire Eastern half of the Kingdom (including the Pyrenees region and Visigothic south of France) rebel against him and it was THIS faction who invited the Berber's over.
Which then realised they could take and hold large amounts of territory on their own. Which led to an utter panic by the Arab Umayyad ruler of North Africa and so he launched a second invasion to make sure there was no independent Berber state since the Berber's were fairly easy going towards being Muslim.
Anyway, the Umayyad controlled expansion into the free Visigothic kingdom was slower and culminated in the fall of Narbonne HOWEVER, given Odo had been fighting on behalf of the Visigoths (plus given Aquataine was formally Visigothic and had not integrated or assimilated into the Frankish kingdoms as seen by differing law codes and above all differing languages), it could argue that the attack on Toulouse was seen by the Umayyads as merely a continuation of the Visigothic campaign.
Odo don't forget had immediately sought aid from Martel when the Muslims arrived. Martel refused, as he would rather the land fell to Muslims then it remain in Odo's hands.
The victory of Toulouse was, from the Muslims point of view, THE catastrophic defeat. It was horrendous defeat. It was the final moment they or any Muslim invasion force would ever attack Western Europe.
The defeat caused Odo to gain the title Odo the Great, a title that stuck in the craw of Charles Martel. We know this because Martel years later took the staggering death toll Odo inflicted upon the Muslims and copied it; literally he claimed the exact same number of dead at the Battle of Tour, conflating the figures so he could stand equal to Odo, the man who between the battle of Toulouse and later Tour had run rings around Martel both diplomatically and on the battlefield.
Proof of this? Well the attack on Aquataine by Rahman was not a retaliation for Toulouse. It was caused by the fact Odo had caused a rebellion in the Umayyads territory. Like he had clearly wanted when he got involved in the Visigothic Civil war, Odo wanted to have his territory ally with a friendly territory to his south. That way he could focus his troops against his real enemy- Martel.
He did this by forging an alliance with Berber's living in the region (you make a brief mention of this in the video). They would rebel against the Umayyads and hold the territory around the Pyrenees with Odo protecting them from the north, with them doing the same to the south.
I know the idea of Muslims and Christians forging an alliance to oppose BOTH the Frank's and the Umayyads utterly destroys the whole 'clash of civilisations' narrative but what can we say?
The narrative was a lie anyway.
So yeah, this was why Rahman launched his RAID (not an invasion, unlike the previous attack there were no siege engines involved), and it was only facing this force (led by a survivor of the defeat at Toulouse who made sure that his new force didn't repeat the mistakes made by the previous force which gifted Odo his victory) that Odo sought Martel's help again, and as you mention he was refused a second time.
Martel's sole motivation was to take Aquataine. It was only Odo's submission that led him to get off his backside.
Beyond that, the only counter point I would offer in the battle itself would be Martel's forces were drawn up IN the treeline to help break up the cavalry charges, and Odo and his men were probably on foot when he launched the spoiling raid (Odo was in command of the lightly engaged flank that allowed him do this- and yes Odo won the battle, not Martel another reason why Martel stole the casualty figures from the Battle of Toulouse and claimed them at Tours).
This is not a critique of your video by the way. It was awesome and it is clear you (unlike so many) sought Muslim sources of events, but more me trying to place things in their proper complexity.
It was never Muslims v Christians.
It was always Visigoths v Visigoths v Berber's v Basques v Aquataine v Frank's v Arabs, a shifting geopolitical crucible that took years to settle (if it ever did, as the region's predisposition towards rebellion against the Umayyads was reinforced when it rebelled against the Abbasids on behalf of the Umayyads soon afterwards).
Bravo for making this sir.
yes, there are too many historical mistakes in this film. Too bad
@@japaris75 I don't hold it against the maker of the video who tried very hard clearly. And it's better than 99% of the other accounts which is why I liked it so much.
Understand I spent years studying this specific time/period and so I indulge in the complexity.
The stuff I am into doesn't make a good video. Book? Sure. All academic with footnotes and whole chapters on translation notes and contexts, but a decent video covering the subject while hinting at the deeper complexity? It would utterly fail :)
This is why I really enjoyed it.
Thanks bro
It's a nitpick, but I really doubt Charles wore a crown. He was Mayor of the Palace, not the King
You say it 'was very clear' that Odo was involved in the Visigothic civil war. First I've ever heard of this. Would you kindly mention some sources for history fans like me to read up on.
The move by Oda on the Moorish camp was the most significant part of the battle.
Without it the battle would have been a draw mostly, with the decision going to the Hammer, because of the logistical position he maintained, being on his home turf.
The fact that the Moorish commander was killed, along with a significant amount of his troops, as a result of Odo's move, gave Charles the clear victory, but, the Moors were still not overwhelmed and destroyed, and they left of their own volition that evening with the Franks not giving chase in the morning and that should tell you all you need to know about this battle.
Main reason for this victory of Charles Martel was his choice of Position (was an Excellent Tactician/commander) where his flanks were covered by forests and river vienne. Leaving Muslim cavalry no room to maneuver. Moreover, Muslims campaign thought this campaign was limited to aquitaine only and they were supposed to retire in winter after capturing some more loot in tours. They had no idea of a frankish army would confront them.
So when muslims met a stiff challenge, they thought it best to retire for winter. The loss of commander made sure that the only option left was to retreat as most soldiers were tired and wanted to return.
False, because all the historians of the Ummayyads wrote extensively about the horrible losses of the muslim army whether in person or in weapons and supplies and the victory of The Frank was crushing to the extent that the muslims have never again thought of launching another expedition like that anymore and no other muslim force of that size has ever dared to cross into France again no matter how much they were successful in Spain, instead from that point forward, it was the turn of Christian Conquistadores who started regaining place after another.
The Moorish troops got beaten pretty badly and ran away in the night... tells me they lost
The dude at 12:22 just beating the shit outa the air like it cheated on him lmao!
Also the beginning of Frankish cavalry. Quite possibly the first time the Franks had seen stirrups in use.
Martel was a quick learner and an excellent Tactician and Field commander. He had studied Muslim way of warfare and knew that he needed to cover his flanks with forests/river vienne so that Muslim predominantly cavalry force can't maneuver around and attack from flanks or rear.
Odo was defeated exactly by such maneuvering of Muslim cavalry in previous battle. What Muslims missed in this battle was to somehow lure Martel out of his defensible position by feigned retreat or something.
that history animated narration was so spectacular it looked like i am playing a strategy pc game

Amazing video, 3D maps are totally different from other videos. Only mistake : In theory, Charles Martel was not king but " mayor of the palace ", like a Prime minister but with less power. Yes in practice he was more powerful that the king himself but he had not a
king's crown and haven't the power of the title of king.
Thank you very much!
I think it is mentioned in the video that Charles was "Mayor of the Palace".
Yes, the Merovingians still held the throne of the Frankish empire, but under Martel and his son Pepin the Short, the mayor's office became more powerful. It was Pepin who persuaded the Merovingians to hand over the title of King, thus beginning the Carolingian dynasty.
Majordomo, specifically. A common frankish tradition.
The fun part of this is that Charles Martel refused to take the crown to the king while making him very weak, futile.
Generally a very good presentation. However, the Umayyad court recorders often embellished the nation's successes excessively. I read an account of the conquest of Malta and the generosity of the invaders to the Maltese. However, I later read an account by a Muslim scholar who described his surprise at how few Maltese men survived the invasion. I have no doubt it is in the interest of the court to present a benign face to conquest so a fellow Muslim observer's account is probably more truthful. Such is the way of politics. And in war, the first casualty is the truth.
Unsure of this specific battle but I find the winner usually embellish their victory.
Propaganda has always been around. When you look a bit closer at Caesars battles, the enemy numbers are usually blown up by a factor of two or three. When you read about Thermopylae, nobody mentions the roughly 2.000 volunteers from other greek city states and again Persian numbers are wildly overblown by a factor of 10-20.
Maybe Muslim writers didn't lie when they thought the conquest of Malta was "civilized". They didn't kill EVERY man and many survivors were probably "only" enslaved.
Charlemagne supposedly killed 5.000 Saxon warrios who didn't want to be baptized. If the Saxons had had that many warriors, they probably would have defeated Charles ...
Not to mention weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, Bin Laden in Afghanistan and Nazis in Ukraine for some recent "proper propaganda".
Main reason for this victory of Charles Martel was his choice of position where his flanks were covered by forests and river vienne.
The loss of commander made the only option left was to retreat as most soldiers were tired and wanted to return.
Charles was not only a good tactician but also managed alliances very well. He was a good field commander plus an Empire Builder. Very rare that both these characteristics occur in same person!

In Spenglerian terms the Carolingians, together with their cousins the Anglo-Saxons, went on to found the most important culture (and civilisation) in history.
This underlines the importance of this victory for the world as a whole.
Too bad we are losing that civilisation now.
The "most important culture in the world"? you must refer to the greeks and romans
@@benicabanas9793 Of course not. They couldn't even find a use for steam, let alone ultimately put probes on Mars. They could barely find their way out of the Mediterranean, let alone circle the earth or find their way to the poles.
As for advanced mathematics, we can't even go there if we are talking about a culture that used a set of strokes in arbitrary sequence to try to add up.
Philosophy was an important tradition, and architecture, but we have gone beyond even those.
@@alexdavis1541 All that you say by itself are only scientific advances, they are very far from being called "civilization" or "culture", review the concepts.
"As soon as they left the Mediterranean", I don't know how they managed to conquer the British islands.
It wasn't the Anglo-Saxons that first circumnavigated the earth either, it was the Spanish and Portuguese, I think you should check the history books.
@@benicabanas9793 That's just a cope. Science is an aspect of an advanced civilisation. And not just a manifestation in this case, since western culture actually invented science.
Furthermore, philosophy isn't a "scientific advance" in itself. Although it is the case that the greatest modern philosophers are typically British, German or French. Some from other parts of the west. But that is the point, "from the west". Virtually no other form of systemised thought impinges on the existing social paradigm in the way western thought does. And will continue to do so.
As for the voyages of the Spanish and Portuguese (at least as bold and momentous as those of the later British and Dutch), last time I looked Spain and Portugal are in western Europe.
As for your mis-quote about classical civilisation leaving the Med, - in the first instance, who would deny the classical world had impressive civilisations? Geographically they concentrated on the Mediterranean ring however. They had no sense of a global ambition. Unlike the western Europeans.
Rome did move into Britain during the final part of its ascendancy, in the end being ousted as a result of pressure from what was to become the emerging Carolingians (western European civilisation).
You are further mistaken in the idea that Rome conquered the British Isles. Rome was only able to subdue about half the land mass of these islands.
I suggest you do some reading. You might get a little less confused.
@@alexdavis1541 I know that Rome reached Hadrian's wall, in any case, it more or less conquered what is present-day England, in any case I will listen to you, I will look for some reading about that supposed Anglo-Saxon-Carolingian civilization, I doubt that I will find anything...😏

UA-cam works in strange ways! hahaha
@@historybattles3D First, under your pinned comment here "Indian_Turk_2002" last month had a technical question without response. Just in case you happen to have an answer. I mentioned "Storyblocks".

Second, I do wish to encourage you to keep on, as I think your videos do have very good quality. If you keep thinking of it as a hobby project, staying focused on your content and not number of views, then in any case you can always look back and know that *"I* created this"._ And I think the audience will come along the way.
UA-cam does indeed work in mysterious ways, yes. And I've heard several UA-camrs over time telling how it take years of hard work to build up a channel to begin earning much from it. Some mentioned over 300,000 subs for their own (news type of) channel, but I guess that can vary much depending on the type of content. Please _don't_ let this discourage you. I have seen channels that after years had 10k subs last december, then over the last year jumped to over 100,000 subs.
I know UA-cam has a lot of statistics for your channel. Some UA-camrs use those to analyse which sort of content give which numbers of views, and when. Some mention how the first couple of days after upload is important, but that could be specific for news channels. I don't know, but have a look at the statistics now and then, it might be helpful along the way. Use it not as a goal, but as a tool.
It's only recently I came upon your channel by chance. So UA-cam does suggest your channel. Subscribing to nearly 200 channels I was actually cleaning up when I subscribed to yours, to encourage you, and not to lose contact with your channel since I really like your content, and I enabled "all notifications". That said, I must admit that since 24th february 2022 about 95% of my UA-cam watch time has been dedicated to things concerning the situation with Ukraine, since I see it as of utmost importance to all of us in Europe. That we fail to realise how risky things are to us, until Ukraine have an absolute and resounding victory. Which should be a "must happen" from our point of view.
But... I still watch history content too. And should you happen to do a video on something connected to Ukraine or Kievan Rus I will be sure to share it in our Ukraine news DC group. Maybe some battle with the Mongols? I don't have any specific suggestions on hand.
Finally, I see this video about the Battle of Tours was your first upload, already very good quality. I just watched your Battle of Hastings video, will try to watch it again one of these days for a better comparison. I really liked both.

I want to point out that after stating that the Umayyad army was comprised mostly of light horseman you also state that this battle is a demonstration of the effectiveness of heavy infantry against heavy cavalry, which is contradictory and also mostly untrue.

Well, I haven't clarified that there were elements of heavy cavalry which the Franks were able to handle.

Thank you very much !
That was beautiful :)
Excellent video. I knew next to nothing about those events. BTW 14:35 "watermark moment" is meant to be "watershed moment".
Good call!
A marriage of watershed and land mark.
@@fernan5320 Yes, I never saw that - not so much 'married bliss' as 'married miss'.

Excellent history! Thanks!
Thanks for commenting!
Thanks for the great work.
Glad you liked it!
And absolutely don't forget the Siege of Constantinople 717/718, this one was absolutely huge for preserving Christian Europe and the West!!! Critical importance!
Nice, very nice! Thank you for video!
Very interesting and well presented; thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
In 732 at the Battle of Tours,
Charles Martel hammered the Moors
There needs to be some clarification when it comes to naming this battle.
I've avoided calling it "Poitiers" due to the famous medieval struggle with the same name.
But, it is known by both names.
You hum it
And I'll play it! 👍
In 2022 , in Pelosi house . David DePape hammered Paul Pelosi & plead not guilty to all state charges
It's pretty cool to be able to watch multiple videos on these battles. This video seems to be a little at odds with the others, so I read, outside of the videos. Yeah, it's at odds with historical accounts. I get it, all the accounts are from European sources. I wasn't here so, IDK
VERY GOOO VIDEO ! CONGRATS MAN, I'M LOVE
Thank you very much!
Great work on this can't wait to see more
Τhank you!
If the channel performs well I would be able to make much more and more frequently!
Yeah. This and breaking the siege of Vienna stopped the Muslim drives into Western Europe.
Those who like to criticize the Crusades should keep this in mind.
The Eastern Roman Empire and the Persians had been fighting each other for some time and weakened each other when the Arabs rose under Muhammad. The expansion of the Muslims was at the expense of the Christians and Persians. All of North Africa was Christian - and they never took that back - but they did try and counter attack the Muslims in the Middle East and held Jerusalem for a while.
.
Very nice video, more entertaining than most of these. Great animation!
Thank you very much!
10:30 "Disciplined heavy infantry in formation. Chaaaaahhhrge! What can POSSIBLY go wrong..."
- Ab-Rahman, 732 C.E., near Tours (probably)

Loved the video! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I like it. Looks quite familiar to Total War Attila Age of Charlemagne, including the strange behaviour of individuals on the battlefiled.😁
Charles the Hammer, in this vid, looks like he got a bad hit of acid. "Hello hello hello, is there anybody in there, just nod if you can hear me, Is there anyone home?..."
We're the first 100 Subscribers! Hope to see more soon. :) Good Luck!
Awesome! Thank you!
Charles Martel looks completely stoned at 1:37
Problematic motion capture.
In the next videos the problem is pretty much resolved.
Plz consider making vids like this but about Spanish war of succession. It desperately needs to be covered.
I'll definitely try to move to a gunpowder period since there is great potential.
Need to figure out a few effects and reconfigure my system.
