One of the most underrated entertainers and musicians. Talking about originality and uniqueness…. One major talent gone up to heaven….
I saw him once live as a teenager. Very blessed to have seen him in person. :) He was a cool guy, and what a sweet bass voice.
I will always remain envious! I’m sure you’ll never forget that experience. You can’t listen to him, without experiencing him! Very cool 😎
Leon Redbone was a great entertainer, getting by on talent, a rare commodity these days.
Listening to him all my cares fade away.
I think Redbone was one of the most underrated entertainers in America... I mean, Canada. NO ONE sounded like him.
I grew up in the 70's with the music of Leon Redbone and Dr John. To their music from that time was so full and imaginative. I knew that Dr John had died very recently and found out today that Leon Redbone died about a week before. Sad that they're gone from this planet so soon. Thank you for posting this video. Really enjoyed it.
He never came out of character no matter what, even behind the scenes. If you asked him a question ,such as where were you born, he would only answer,
" Can't remember" .He was a great cartoonist and drew so very fast.
He once drew me a beer mug with a face and the foam on top made the hair, for my autograph. He did put an L on it for Leon. He was just as secretive with his dobro player for a while Cindy Cash dollar. She got the same reply to any personal questions. Amazing in this day and age he managed to keep his identity such a secret for so long due to his name change in Canada. But also staying in charector never letting his guard down.
I don't think that was his character, that is who he was.
@@kennethpaquin8574 yes it has to be who he was, no one could keep that up as long as he did.
Ok guys, perhaps you are right Maybe that was his personality, but i didn't write every odd thing he did in my original comment.
I only knew him from the old Birchemere in Alexandra, VA. where he frequently played. Our friends Gary and Linda were the owners and my husband also played there very often.
I was not present when he first came in to talk with Gary but my sister in law Terry Rice was. She thought he was just messing with Gary's head, who was a control freak himself...however he made Gary turn the table at a certain angle before he would sit down to discuss business. He made him move all the chairs and only leave 2. He made Gary move his beer from the right side of his body to his left. so he had to reach across to drink it. When Gary forgot to sit it on his left, he would not answer only point to his beer , then the left side of his body. Gary had papers so he could not just hold his beer and write. He would not let Linda sit down who wanted meet him , reminding Gary only 2 chairs could be at the table.
Cindy Cash Dollar also told me he would never ride with her to venuesn or allow her to ride with him. . He had his own driver with this average looking older car, and he sat in the back seat. He would never go out to eat with her before or after a show. He just came and left on his on, she said.
Norman Blake, who also plays old traditional tunes, told us long ago before anyone knew who he was, he had come to the conclusion he was his stalker. He told us he only showed up when he played outdoor festivals. He said " He would "skalk" at me play behind a tree or a fence nearest my stage. But when I looked at him he would draw his head back like he didnt want me to know he was there" . . He said back then he wore a stocking cap and the same dark glasses over his eyes. When he finally saw him on T.V he was shocked but knew for certain he was the same guy from the past. He added " I wondered why he stopped showing up at my gigs. He said " I just figured he finally got arrested for something."
Norman was scared of him.
He said " For all I knew he had a knife, and just didn't my looks or how i played. I never knew what his problem with me was"
He had us dying laughing, he is an old GA. mountaineer musician and great friend, but he was dead serious repeating his past tales of Leon encounters.
his real name was Dickran Gobalian, born in British Cypres 1949, his parents were from Jerusalem, they later moved to England and in 1965 moved to Canada . I think he lived in Pennsylvania, most of his life, he had a wife and 2 grown daughters when he died
@@Quamela this is so cool to know, makes me love him even more
If you look up the term "laid back" in the dictionary, Leon Redbone's picture is right next to it...
A pure gift from the heavens. Great talent. So very under rated.
Love you and always have and always will, My Uncle Eddie sang me these songs when I was a kid in the 50s at the top of the top of the wood stairway at his 3story house in Houston Tx, The sound and Acoustics were fantastic. He was 78 when I was 5 yrs old What an education. Thank you so much Pat
There will NEVER be another Leon Redbone... R.I.P. my Brother...
Thanks for the upload!
3 originals on a talk show at one time...might be an all-time record, RIP Mr Redbone
My cousin interviewed him many years back, and he was being him usual evasive self. After several tries to learn his background, she finally asked him what his heritage was. He answered, 'Well, I come from a long line of celibations!' She replied, 'Ah! It's a wonder you were born at all!' The man took up with her after that, and they had a good visit. Wish I could have been a fly on the wall to see/hear that!
Great story
I love Mr. Redbone. Toddle-oo, dear. We miss you.
