    *How are you watering your chickens and other backyard poultry?*
    We were surprised at how easy it was to use these Rent-a-Coop Watering nipples:

    Thank you for this video. We currently have the water cups attached to a 5 gallon bucket. Usually it’s is enough for our seven hens, but on a hot day, they run out of water. I will give this a try.

    Haaa, hey mine eat chicken scrap to! The barrel is the way to go if you have a large flock. My run is not high enough for a barrel and my flock is growing small due to hawks and fox so the 5 gallon bucket is good for me. Good video!

    How do you combat the vacuum pressure as the water gets low? Drill a vent hole? Will that create an algae problem since it won’t be sealed then?

    Thank you for this! I am picking up a drum and the rent a coop kit tomorrow. This is going to allow some autonomy for both the chickens and I in the near future.

    Growing up we just had a 5 gallon bucket cut in half with an aquarium (fish tank) heater in it to try to keep it from always freezing (zone 7). I remember catching some "pet" tadpoles and keeping them in the bucket, but then the pet chickens ate them all.

    I was wondering with that much water in a bin how do you keep it fresh do you add vinegar to it or a little bit of bleach how do you keep it from getting stagnant and bacteria

    I just bought these water things you suggested thank you. So how do feed and what, how often?

    • @theunhurriedfarm5508

      We feed our chickens a lay-pellet from our local feed store! We also feed our kitchen scraps, weeds, and bug eaten garden veggies. We keep their lay pellets topped off, and find that our now 18 chickens go through about 30-35lb of feed a week.

    Suggestion, run a water source in there hook to a bathroom, toilet float that way when the water level goes down the float will at turn on the water and constantly refill itself

    • @theunhurriedfarm5508
      @theunhurriedfarm5508  Рік тому

      That's a great idea for someone who's got consistent "always on" water source. In our case, we moved out coop and it is refilled every time our orchard gets watered.

    I have been playing with the idea of doing this myself as well. Live in eastern Colorado where the winters are anything but mild. What do you use to heat yours during the cold months?

    • @theunhurriedfarm5508
      @theunhurriedfarm5508  Рік тому

      We don't hit consistent freezing temps here in SoCal! I know others in freezing climates use a heating coil to keep the water above freezing. Not sure if the nipples have issue freezing, even if the barrel isn't frozen

    so are you in an area where this could freeze, and if so can you use a water heater?

    • @theunhurriedfarm5508
      @theunhurriedfarm5508  Рік тому

      We're in SoCal, so it never freezes here. But any water heater you'd put into a livestock tank could go in something like this to prevent freezing.

    How do you keep the water fresh inside?

    • @theunhurriedfarm5508
      @theunhurriedfarm5508  10 місяців тому

      The water cycles often enough that it is fresh enough for the chickens. Remember, these are creatures that eat roadkill and live bugs. Their stomachs are tough!
