Never thought I'd see Holga and "game changer" in the same sentence 😂 Was always intrigued by Holgas, now specially more after the fact that there's a new one with different shutter speeds
Very enterprising and an interesting mod. For me though, the whole point of using a Holga is to do away with all the fuss that goes with normal photography. That missing aperture of F8 is also pretty useful close up. Thanks Rog.
That's what I felt. I like shooting the Holga without metering. I guess you can have best of both worlds. Be strict on yourself and set it to 1/125 and don't change it (but you probably will 😂)
For better or worse, I've just bought a Holga, mines the 120 GCFN with the multi coloured flash, not sure what that's all about but hey ho. I bought it just literally as a mess about camera as I get back into B&W film photography along with a few other vintage camera's I now own. I may well try some of that 1mm thick self adhesive foam sheet that you use to replace light seals in old camera's and make some for around the grooves in the back cover. I noticed Roger that on your original Holga that the cover clips were on upside down at one point so I don't know if that was leading to the back popping off. Love your style of content presenting, keep it up, watch all your stuff. Regards, Steve
Once again, Roger, you prove it"s not the tool, it's the artist using it!! Nice shots!! Have to look into that one. The guy that makes his own version might consider a cable release for this version. Almost impossible to find one for the Holga.
Just found out Holga makes (or made) lenses for DSLR's! I just watched a movie that was shot partially using them. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an adapter to attach them to film cameras.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss The movie is called A Field in England. It's pretty weird and trippy, but you can instantly spot the shots that were done with the Holga lens.
Under the hood he probably uses an ESP32 based microcontroller. They can be flashed with various firmwares so it might be possible to update it. Also, I find that depending on how the app was coded on the controller (I think he probably used a web interface), different browsers sometimes get different results.
This where it gets odd! Holga and Microcontroller? Holga is all about operating the shutter with the help of a bent safety pin as a spring, and a slit instead of an aperture. This is where its charm and attraction lies.
I started with a Folding camera 6x6. Zeiss Ikon Nettar. Many available and brilliant cameras with good lenses. If you can afford to step up then look at Bronica ETRS.
In a similar situation I went for a late model Rolleicord. I like it a lot. Although their price has risen a fair bit you can still get a good one for £300
3:09 That's actually (possibly) incorrect, they were marketed towards families in Hong Kong and China as an affordable camera, however, I bet they didn't expect the brand to live on this long. Correct whatever is incorrect, that's what I heard...
Great job, Boss! I'm from Seattle and get a lot of flat lighting as well. Do you normally push your film to help get contrast on those days? Keep up the great work!
Not really push. Normally I would expose normally and extend the development time by 15-20%. I do the same on contrasty days but under develop instead. Try a push and an over develop next time you have a flat day and see how it works for you.
This is cool! But it somewhat contradicts the original "idea of Holga", which was supposed to be an extremely simple and therefore imperfect toy camera with an extremely interesting, plastic lens (sharp in the center, blurring and vignetting at the edges of the frame) which had to be sometimes covered with black tape so as not to let parasitic light inside. And perhaps that was her charm? After all, Holga won't be perfect by adding a shutter speed mechanism anyway. But maybe that's what the audience is waiting for? I don't have a Holga among my cameras - I'm satisfied with old boxes and a Polish plastic toy camera, for children and scouts. They are different from Holga, but they will not evolve into complications and perfection. Greetings from Poland 😁
Love the bridge and tree shot around the 8-minute mark. What an enterprising idea to make the Holga more versatile. And great that Pete won the film, he's a smashing bloke.
It sounds very interesting to make the Holga more useful. It remains to be seen how much the modified Holga is. The original Holga was a fixed 125th @ f13. I used to feed mine with Shanghai GP3. However it was really a camera for a sunny day unless you used Ilford XP2. It took a sunny day to make the vignette really strong anyway. The Lomo Diana + gave better results than the Holga because the apertures are smaller. That camera was for 400ASA stock only. Both have a simple meniscus lens.
If someone knows, I would be interested to know the reference of the little shutter mecanism for a project of mine (if the guy didn't made it himself of course! ) :)
Interesting vid. Not shot a Holga..I just struggle to see the point in them, due to the poor quality lens and build quality.. when you can buy a Ziess ikon Nettar for £20 with much better results.
I have never seen the appeal of using a toy camera. However, these are very personal likes and dislikes. Many folks I respect use them. I have seen some good photographers take very fine, displayable photographs with them. It shows that equipment does not make a good photograph-photographers do. Keep having fun!!!
the whole point of sunny 16 is to approximate the exposure and rely on the latitude of the film to handle the heavy lifting. f13 is close enough to f16 to not matter at all when using sunny 16 with pretty much anything but slide film.
To whom it may concern: “好光” pronounce in Cantonese is almost "holgon"
Interesting hack. They should hire this guy for developing future holgas.
Never thought I'd see Holga and "game changer" in the same sentence 😂
Was always intrigued by Holgas, now specially more after the fact that there's a new one with different shutter speeds
The way the Holga forces you to be creative rather than relying on technical ability or hella bokeh is absolutely 100% a game changer.
I have been a Holga fan since the 90s ... wanna get this version!!!
Whooooa that's pretty darn significant. Very cool!
I've bought the 135 and 135BC this year, going to wait for the second one to be delivered before I take them out for a test.
Enjoy Luke
Works for me , nice images , gives you more options with exposure for sure .
I thought for a minute during the dog barking part that you were at Onslow,s and Daisy's flat.😂Nice little camera and photos!
Glad Peter won the films 👍

Hi Roger, what-is-good? Interesting take on the Holga, and a great video. Thanks for all your hard work. Atb 👍
The advantage of taking pictures in the same places is you get good refrence images for testing diffrent cameras
Well done Pete 🙂 Another great vid m8 🙂

Another great vlog, Roger! It's amazing what cameras people are pimping these days. Some nice photos as well. 😉
Cheers Gary 👋
Interesting camera👍
Where did you get your Holgon. I can't find anything in the net.
Interesting idea Roger but I do like the simplicity & “randomness” of the 120N

@@lensman5762 though there is something to be said for making a medium format camera that is as available and cheap as the holga, more flexible.
WOW 2023 Holga is getting close to 30% features od 1953 Baldix :D LOL
Hi, can you please provide a link to find more about Holga with shutter speeds? thanks
The only one I know is the guy in Hong Kong that made this one. You can find him on instagram. instagram.com/helicord_camera/#
thanks@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss
what would you suggest or look at in the low-end medium format cameras that isnt what we'd consider a toy camera?

I tried Kentmere with my Holga but the faint numbers and print on Kentmere do not show through the red window on the back
Thats hard work when that happens! I end up having to tilt my camera to the sunlight a bit which is always cagey
I'm glad the Boss got the films .... you mean you didn't spot the sub/liminal message in my comment .... have another look 😁
Thanks for the info :-) ... And for those who do not use instagram , like myself ...? How can we contact him ...? 😕

Never appealed to me until a kind man sent me one. Same as pinhole too. I decided to try that and liked that also.
A pity that the aperture isn't f16 or f8, it would make shooting sunny 16 rules easy
