I have a question about you classes you are doing . If one was to take them would it help them pass or be able to get a license? And do you have to be a master plumber in order to get the license?
Septic installer and apprentice plumber here. Thanks brother. I really enjoy your vids. Bastrop TX. Not to far from you. If your ever out this way call me, I’ll buy you lunch! 💪🏽
No he not He's the one that thinks that he knows it all and everything he does is the right way Nobody's better than him He knows when he 1st started plumbing he did what everybody else is doing. He likes criticizing the new plumbers out there instead of teaching them and helping them Mr. No it all
My favorite part was when you cut the quarter inch off the pipe you already put primer on! That is so real! I don’t know how many times I had to do that??? I love your videos I know how you feel! The challenge is worth the reward!!
Couldn't agree more with you my friend on grading the trench. Im a journeyman plumber in Arizona. I absolutely love your professionalism. Doing the right way is not always the easiest but its the right thing to do. Thanks for the awesome videos Roger.
I do a lot of this work. Not really tunneling under houses as much because we don’t see a lot of that here but I do enjoy watching how other people do things . Some things I throw in the memory toolbox for when and if I hit these same situations
I have two hackzall’s , wore out my first one after one year. Bought a second one, sent first one back to Milwaukee through supply house. Week and a half later I got a call that Milwaukee sent me a new one. Week and a half later my drill died, so I bought a drill and impact combo kit, brushless type.
Tbh I never thought I'd be watching plumbing videos, you genuinely make great, and informative videos. P.s. you are amazing I love your vids -a fellow subscriber
Awesome video Roger! It's really beneficial for me to see these real plumbing projects.. lets me know what I'm in for! Looks so fun, can't wait to graduate high school and actually plumb every day
Hi there, in Australia we do these types of installations a bit differently to you, I won’t go into detail about your repair but I will say I would tackle that job in another way, in saying that all plumbers work and think in mysterious ways ! Good luck
Roger, you can use the beams to measure off of as well. You know if you're making your hangers at 4ft apart, you can add an inch drop and you will have 1/8 fall every time.
This is the one reason plumbing is not for me, I don't have the mental strength to deal with sewer, toilets & I appreciate hard working people like you.
Trick of the trade, I do these daily…hang all your pipe without couplings in your hangers and set your fall. Then you go back and cut in your 4x2 combos or whatever fittings.
Lol....I repipe under houses sewers and water systems at least once a week here in Oregon.....90% of houses are post and beam .. ...and I'm 5'6" ...and 150 lbs.... The perfect size to usually fit 😂....some times it sucks ...but I will say it keeps me working steady 40+ hours a week
I'm 75 and I have some 2 inch cast iron to cut in a crawl space. It is under house, with 18 inches vertical. How much should I dig out before calling a plumber with a sawzall? The good thing is that the whole job can be done in about 4 feet square, but I don't know how much clearance is reasonable for a young and small plumber.
Do you ever use celluar core pvc, i was taught to clean and glue the flat end of the pipe as well for testing as air could possibly travel through the celluar core
Roger me and my grandfather absolutely love your vids, thanks for you and drain addict for bringing me and him closer. Also what was the music you used in the beginning and near the end cause it gives off many positive vibes.
what’s that purple thing he used??? btw, roger, you’re awesome, you’re the best plumber i’ve ever watched, i’ve learned many things by watching your vids, i’m not a fully plumber, i’m in 10th grade, next year i’m going to be atudying plumbing in highschool, and that’ll be fun, you’re funny man, keep on making vids man, love ya man✌🏻❤️ -love from norwegian fella❤️🇳🇴
The purple is primer. It cleans and softens the PVC prior to gluing. It's required by code so the inspector can visually see all the joints have been properly primed. That's why it's dyed purple and isn't clear like the glue. They make clear primer as well that you can use for non-inspected work. Just know that you'll fail an inspection if you use clear primer.
is filing the end of the pipe really necessary? Don't get me wrong you have way more experience than i do but isn't running your finger around it to remove the burrs just as effective?
Most states require purple primer to be visible so the inspector knows the joint has been properly primed just by seeing the purple. Clear primer is against code in most states but you can still use it if your work isn't going to be inspected.
The purple isn't required, I just prefer the purple primer because it lets the inspector know we put these fittings together properly. I'll use the clear primer under cabinets and things like that so it looks nicer for the customer.
1/4 per foot, 2.5 inches per 10'-stick of pipe, exception if un-able to achieve 1/4 per foot, 1/8th per ft is approved within certain states. Another very important aspect for those of you who hire mac-gyvers, to take the place of a qualified plumber is the fall requirements. To much fall, over and-or well over the 1/4 inch per foot, will be just as sub-standard as less than minimum 1/8th inch per foot fall. Due to toilet paper, human waste, will sit within the approx center of the sewer line, the waste water will wash around the debris, instead of carrying it, to terminate within the city sewer lateral within your city street. Waste water moving to quickly will create either same, and-or near future problems. New sewer or not, has no prevalence.
There is something to be said about being underneath a house in a fucked up situation, no one wants to be in, but getting a job done correctly with your fellow man.
We are always safe in our tunnels. Thankfully this was a pier and beam home. So we just dug a trench where the lines were. The house was picked up off the ground about a foot, no way we could get completely collapsed in. We had a plumber in Dallas pass away to recently from a collapsed tunnel 🙁
Texas and the upc code calls for metal strapping to be okay on pvc? Check out my cast iron toilet flange replacement video. Florida full service plumber trying to document all jobs and post them. Subscribers would be great. New camera is ordered.
Was ist HT? Das graue Kunststoff mit eingebauten Dichtungen? No, those are absolutely NOT used here in the US. Nothing with integral joints. All slip-fit plastic pipe with glue [aka: 'welded' per Universal Plumbing Code] fittings. Comes in white PVC and black ABS. Thicker walls than German pipes and quite rigid by comparison. [PVC=polyvinyl chloride; ABS= acrylic butyl styrene] Not better; just different. Also, the toilet drains here come out the bottom of the toilet, not the rear.
Thank you! We are having ours done and it’s being replaced with 3 in ABS but our old one was cast iron was 4 in and we wondered about it. Our plumber said it’s better flow in a 3-in sewer with solids than a 4 inch line. also raised the end of the line, which gives it more fall than the existing 4 inch pipe. Each 3 inch Branch line will tie into the 4-in main independently. You can run a whole house with three bathrooms off of a 3-inch line. It is a better design plan. We just wanted to research it ourselves as well so we are informed
I also like your really safe knee workbench! No but really I saw someone doing something similar, (he cut wood I believe) somehow the tool slipped. He got some parts of his knee replaced and had to go to rehab and so on. He can be happy that we live in Germany and the Arbeitsunfallversicherung (work accident insurance) from the company or his normal health insurance was paying for all this.

AND your point is. Over a year old.
Any owner that is jumping in the trenches with the rest of the plumbers is one dude I would love to work for. Keep up the good work. Plumb on!
My favorite part was when you cut the quarter inch off the pipe you already put primer on!
That is so real! I don’t know how many times I had to do that???

I'm an electrician, but I love watching these videos.

Your are absolutely godly at the plumbing trade , much respect to you Mr. Wakefield

Thanks James! I'm glad you liked it.
Roger Wakefield you’re the man!
That Milwaukee Hackzall is sooo clutch under a house, literally upped the quality of life for me by like 20%.
Foreal! Only plumbers know what’s up with this tool ! Makes working under the house soooooo much easier

Had my sewer system replaced about a year ago. 80 ft of tunnel and $22,000 later, it works! I'm in grand prairie, tx.
22,000??
Love your videos! But i prefer gray glue when doing pvc! That way you can visually see the joint is premiered and glued.
Perfect timing I just got a call for today underground leak
Did you already find the leak? Or are you going to do some leak detection?
Roger Wakefield leak detection
Easy on the primer Roger lol. Just kidding looks good buddy
Roger, you can use the beams to measure off of as well. You know if you're making your hangers at 4ft apart, you can add an inch drop and you will have 1/8 fall every time.
If the concrete is level!
1 inch of drop in 4 feet equals a quarter inch per foot not 1/8 inch per foot
This is the one reason plumbing is not for me, I don't have the mental strength to deal with sewer, toilets & I appreciate hard working people like you.
Trick of the trade, I do these daily…hang all your pipe without couplings in your hangers and set your fall. Then you go back and cut in your 4x2 combos or whatever fittings.

The video you shared is very helpful! hope to be your companion in the future, thank you for everything!👍🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I lost it at "remember *fart noise* runs downhill" or something like that. I died! 😭🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂😂😂
unless you put a pump on it
Heard different lingo from different areas of the country, Wisconsin is a new one for me.
Right. I had to listen to it a few times. In California it’s a closet bend/closet San tee. Never heard Wisconsin before
@top dead center not new to plumbing. Probably a California thing. We have to do a lot more odd things to pass inspection here.
I see it now, it’s a San tee with a side inlet.
@Top Dead Center Don't think you can get those anymore unless they are special ordered. But we would refer to that as a side inlet tee.
Good stuff, Rog
Love the video
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Got that Miner look going on! Love how percise you are with the primer!
Sure makes me glad I do plumbing work in areas where there are mostly basements... most of the time at least 😂

Ahhhh roots. My favorite part of plumbing haha.
Oh I use one of the silver Empire levels too, not bad, but I prefer the orange Bahco ones
I am plumber in uk for 2 years now, quick question, when you glue the pvc don’t you need to clean the pipe ?
I really enjoy your videos
In the states we do. Have to prime them all all glue each one
That's what the purple primer does, it cleans and softens the PVC prior to gluing.
Did y’all put any glue on it or just the purple primer?
VERY very nice job Roger. However, as an engineer I would have performed a re route so this problem could never happen again under the slab.
Good job and good experience for plumbing work 👍👍
you should do a video on the dig crew and how you backfill
Good to see you are a customer at teters faucet parts hahaha. I recognize their logo on the shear band.
Hi roger you make great videos! I was wondering if you could make videos pertaining to boilers, hydronic heating or flushometers in the future ?
Roger me and my grandfather absolutely love your vids, thanks for you and drain addict for bringing me and him closer. Also what was the music you used in the beginning and near the end cause it gives off many positive vibes.

It's probably a wye

I saw that cast iron move at 8:25. Did that affect the toilet seal?
Not at all. We checked it too Mark. Good catch.
I was told you only need to know two things to be a plumber poop runs down hill and pay day is Friday .lol.,,really good video thank you
We use grey pvc pipes or the black ones.
Can you use schedule 40 pipe for underground sewer jobs? Or is the sdr 35 the preferred pipe to use? I'm out of New York thank you
You can here in PA and surrounding areas
what blade was that? cuts it so smooth the abs pipe
Is purple primer required in state of Texas , For our state we know homeowners are doing the work if you using purple primer.
Most states require purple primer to be visible so the inspector knows the joint has been properly primed just by seeing the purple. Clear primer is against code in most states but you can still use it if your work isn't going to be inspected.
I m also working as a plumbing FORMAN in Saudi arab
When I did plumbing I was also a dig crew 😂
CAN YOU PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON TRENCHLESS SEWER REPAIR? I AM LEANING TOWARDS ITS BECAUSE IT IS CHEAPER THAN BRAND NEW PIPING!
I have! search "trenchless" on my main UA-cam page, it should come up
Great video Roger! Who does your excavation for your crew ?
Is it required in Texas to
use purple primer? That’s stuff is horrible! We use clear primer in Ohio. Glad you shared the video!
Yeah we have to use purple, its code here in NC
TN requires purple on all new construction and underground so the inspector can tell primer was used.
The purple isn't required, I just prefer the purple primer because it lets the inspector know we put these fittings together properly. I'll use the clear primer under cabinets and things like that so it looks nicer for the customer.
What type / manufacturer of gloves are those?
Do you chamfer the ends of your pipes?

Do they not allow ABS in Texas or is Roger just anti ABS?
Also wished you could sit up in every crawl space, shits awful some times just got bite by a spider the other day while crawling over dead 🐀!🤣
That's definitely one of the worst parts of the job!
Its freaken horrible going under...much respect..
There is something to be said about being underneath a house in a fucked up situation, no one wants to be in, but getting a job done correctly with your fellow man.
Be careful working under buildings. I had a coworker die last year in a cave in. Make sure you use shoring or find a way to make that tunnel safe.
There in Texas they don't have standards down there
Why you did not use glue with primer
Never ask a plumber to borrow his knife peel an apple.
Hey Roger, WTH is a 'Wisconsin'? I'm from Iowa and worked mostly in California. **Wisconsin**?
Texas and the upc code calls for metal strapping to be okay on pvc? Check out my cast iron toilet flange replacement video. Florida full service plumber trying to document all jobs and post them. Subscribers would be great. New camera is ordered.
We in Germany use HT pipes( with rubber seals) for sewer installation. Is this not common in US?

Hab ich mich oft gefragt bei den videos, geht so viel einfacher als die kleberei.
Dallas brand band cast to plastic?
How much would a repair like this cost?
Thousandsssss
Why no fernco for the copper to pvc fitting ?
My mistake should’ve kept watching 😅
Lol left that there because it would have required a ton of extra work to do right by the customer , open walls supports etc to replace that Cast t
So you do mean to say that somebody came back and changed out that metal ribbon that you just put on that plastic pipe I hope
How did the builder get away with running a sanitary drain and potable water in the same trench?
prime the hell out of it 😂
Safety Glasses are always critical!
Safety first!
Great job but recommend using respirators when working under houses like that all sorts of nasty things in the air under homes 🤢
we have the same torpedo level!
Is this 3 inches or 4?
3
Thank you! We are having ours done and it’s being replaced with 3 in ABS but our old one was cast iron was 4 in and we wondered about it.
