Also - book a sleeper because you get an actual *bed*. Sleeping in coach is somewhere between not easy and impossible (source: personal experience with both)
My dad and I are planning an amtrak trip with the following agenda: Pittsburgh, PA to Chicago, IL; Chicago to Emeryville, CA; Emeryville to Seattle, WA; Seattle back to Chicago; Chicago back to Pittsburgh. It's gonna cost a lot... but It'll be fun!!!
I’m planning a similar trip for August 2021. NYC to DC, DC to Chicago, Chicago to Emeryville, Emeryville to LA, LA to Chicago, and Chicago to NYC. Hope you guys have fun!
It's a lot less painful if you get the little rooms. But obviously that's a lot more money. When I was a kid we did this all the way across Canada, which was cool. The Rockies portion was really nice.
Yes, the roomettes are more expensive, but the diner food is included with the fare. You can easily spend more than $40 per day in the diner riding in coach. Eating snacks and sandwiches from the lounge/cafe car for a day or more is not healthy dining. Amtrak pricing is more than a convenient store prices, which is more than supermarket prices. The roomettes also provide a bit of privacy, and a more quiet place to sleep. Maybe not for young riders, but more mature riders find this luxury worth affording...
Looks like each of you had a great time. Travel by train........ my kind of travel. I loved this video. You guys are so lucky. I think that this was a great way to introduce people to the joys of train travel. I had a whole lot of fun just watching. Thanks for what you did.
Thanks so much for posting this. I'm a single mom with a train obsessed son. I'm just starting to look at the idea of ridding Amtrak from Atlanta to Seattle and back. Your trip looks amazing. There are lots of tips in your video and posted in the comments. I know it would be something my son would never forget. If anyone else has suggestions I totally welcome them. :)
Did the Empire Builder (Chicago to Seattle) a few years ago and enjoyed it. Got a superliner bedroom, was around $2000, meals were included and had private bathroom with toilet and shower. Delays do build up ( when i was returning from seattle a train had derailed in Minnesota which cuased a back up of trains. Ended up missing my connecting train in Chicago. But amtrak put me up in a nice hotel and got me a ticket on the train the next day. I would highly recommend it, the only real bad things i can saw is thin walls (rabbits don't mate as much as the couple in the room next to me and the woman was loud)and rooms are in just okay, but watching the land pass by made up for the room.
That's why you want to take headphones. Thanks for the tip. I am a frequent Amtrak rider, but never over night. I want to go coast to coast in a sleeper.
Who disliked this video??? In my personal opinion this video was awesome!! The only problem was at 8:27 where is paused for a few seconds but the video was still awesome!!
That was so much fun! I've made that trip myself--from Washington to Chicago and then west on the Southwest Chief, although I usually only go as far as Lamy or Albuquerque in New Mexico. Everything brought back such vivid memories. Taking the train across the US is a great experience. Everyone should do it at least once.
I took the train from Tacoma WA to Oakland CA, 24 hrs. Left at 9 AM. WA and OR was one post card scene after the other. I wish I'd have taken a pillow but otherwise a great trip. .
Yes, there is a baggage check area in the Washington D. C. Union Station. Cost is minimum and the convenience is great. Check your gear, go see the sights, etc.
My wife and I did the same trip last year, took Amtrak from BPT CT to Union Station, used the subway to get everywhere we needed, subways were exceptionally clean and easy to use. Really enjoyed the changing of the guard at Arlington cemetery, have a video that will be handed down to my grandsons. Amtrak was a pleasure to ride on, I just retired from the MTA in 2008 with 37 yrs service, now my wife and I are enjoying the good life. We are headed to the Grand Canyon in May of this year, can't wait.
What a fun trip. Last year my Dad and I went from Seattle to Washington Dc on the train and it was alot of fun. It seemed like we were always going into the dining room to eat. ha ha
At 8:27 the video freeeses. I tred several times to refresh the page but it freezes at the exact same spot every time. May you need to re-upload it or see if youtube can fix it.
Steven Wilson it might be the video file they uploaded. I’m pretty sure it’s not UA-cam, since the video still plays but the frame is frozen in that exact spot.
Frankly I find the Cactus Jack country of west Texas beautiful riding the Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder... This train skirts Langtry, home of Judge Roy Bean...
Actually that's the Coast Starlight that runs between Emeryville (San Francisco) and Los Angeles. The California Zephyr runs between Emeryville (San Francisco) and Chicago.
If you ever take this trip again, consider having a sleeping car accommodation, albeit that’s more expensive but it is a unique experience and far better than a coach seat!
Nice job on the video! I have ridden some of your journey and saw a lot of sights that I recognized! And the editing was well done. Thanks for sharing!!
Genius video, guys, loved the music and your narration, too. I'm doing DC out to Portland OR in Feb, I only WISH I could do coach like you but I just gotta have my roomette for alllll those hours hehe. I applaud you, for sure, looking forward to more of your work...👍
That's awesome! I went on this trip by train too with my brother this past summer. Started in Hartford CT, then went to New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago, Omaha, Denver, stayed a night in the Rockies, Salt Lake City, Reno, San Francisco, then Los Angeles. It was amazing and is a trip I will never ever forget
When I turned 50 we made an effort to ride all of the long distance overnight sleeper Amtrak trains to see America. Riding a trains is so much more relaxing than driving a car. By the time you pay for the wear and tear of your car and tires, consume the gasoline, dine at fast food restaurants on the road, sleep at hotels and motels, you get there almost as quickly and for less cost riding a train. The train isn't nearly as fast, but the train keeps moving all night making up a lot of time you would lose driving and sleeping. I have done all of the overnight sleeper trains Amtrak offers, plus Via's Canadian. The only sleeper train I still have on my bucket list is Via's Ocean to Halifax...
Ron Clark Wow that's amazing! Yeah I completely agree. There is just something different about the train compared to driving or flying. It's so much more relaxing and looks at the journey from a different perspective.
This makes me super excited for my trip on Saturday! I’m totally going to vlog it but there’s no way it will look as good as this video! You guys rocked this vlog!
Did you know, that Las Vegas, NM, was the FIRST Las Vegas? And it was originally a Pony Express station, back in the 1800s....the people, town of Las Vegas, NM are awesome, friendly. And that hotel was featured on Ghost Adventures...yes, it is haunted. Still has original bullet holes in walls & ceilings.
Great vid. But, next time pay for a roomette. it's freaking awesome and very cozy. Yea its a few extra hundred each way but its very very worth it. Privacy, less noise and very cozy with two twinsize beds.
I don't think I could sit that long in the seats ...yes definitely a roomette, or what I always get, a bedroom ...which explains for my bank account being depleted all the time ;-)
Agreed. The more mature riders find this luxury worth the expense. A luxury we choose to afford. Especially considering the meals in the diner are included. You can easily spend $40 per day in the diner from coach...
Chicago’s Union Station has two lounges one for sleeper class the other for Coach. Sleeper was free and I was in the Coach lounge which was $20. 3 big screen TVs, restrooms, luggage check and all the soda and chips you can consume in massive quantities. Call it dinner. They also escorted you to your connecting train. Worth $20!
Great video! Completely amazed you made the whole trip in coach, though; I did Cleveland to Wilmington, NC a couple of years ago, and have to say the roomette was well worth the cost…plus meals are included, and sleeper accommodations give you access to the Amtrak clubs in major stations. Loved seeing DJ's polar bear as well! :D
Woot woot!! La Junta, and Trinidad, and LOLOL Las Vegas NM! etc. etc. I had fun in CO, got out and smoked some herb with my traveling gal pal, and another gentleman who treated us with his herb too! LOL! Fuuun times on the traaaain!!!!
This year this is my adventure (with a stuffed animal named Woofie ☺️) Philly to DC to Chicago to Los Angeles to Seattle. After a week head back along the north, Seattle to Chicago to Pittsburgh back to Philly. Cardinal 51, SouthWest Chief 3, Coast Starlight 14, Empire Builder 8, Capital Limited 30, Pennsylvanian 42. Always wanted to, finally giving it a go. Thank you for sharing, it’s been my go to video to share to others about the adventure of it all.
Braxton can you please provide names of all songs and singers in video. I think the video was great and hope you both enjoyed ourselves. I loo forward to watching more videos to come from you both.
UA-cam recommended this video for me (likely 'cos of my love of train travel in general and my exclusive use of Amtrak for travel in CONUS), and I gotta say It's FREAKING SWEET Y'ALL! GREAT editing. GREAT music. GREAT videography. Now that the technical congrats are outta the way, I must admit I nearly had a heart attack when I watched you make the Jimmy John's run in ABQ (as well the caboose in LAJ?)...anways, all's well that ends well. You covered quite a bit of ground in both WAS and CHI! I am truly impressed! I'm glad you had Giordano's. Well worth the $$$ and time, and close to Chicago Union Station. As an Amtrak Guest Rewards Select Executive tier member (their mileage program's highest awards level), I know well all the routes you plied. Now, I know the sleepers are expensive, but allow me a moment to make this pitch: Besides providing each of you at least a private space with separate bed, toilet, and shower. ALL meals in the dining car (for all persons in each accommodation) are included. Access to 1st Class lounges in both WAS and CHI would have provided free luggage storage, beverages, light snacks (even wine tastings for 21+, and showers in CHI and its SPECTACULAR new Metropolitan First Class Lounge). Free in-car beverage service with unlimited bottled water, juice, and coffee onboard. Truly, guys, (and viewers/fans of this video) it's WELL worth the extra money, imho. And on a trip like this, at least one of the segments (CHI-RIV cos it's longest?) is a good investment. If you're flexible with dates of travel and/or can book WAY out (8-11 months out) and "stair-step" a reservation for a basic coach seat then, later on (assuming the availability holds) pay the upgrade to the roomette or bedroom and then split the cost with the other person(s) in your room, it becomes much more attractive. Just offering my experience for your consideration. To that end, I shared it with a group i'm a member of over on f/b-America's Amtrak. If you see a spike in views and shares, it's my fellow rail advocates. Happy Rails and Happy New Year to you. Hope to see you onboard again soon!
Hard time sleeping in coach seats? Go to observation car late at night and sack out in one of the long seats. They overlook it, most of the time: so who is observing at one in the morning?
Fantastic video. I'm planning a similar trip with my best friend in 2018. I didn't realize you could hop off from time to time. Thanks again for the video. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Amtrak has a long stop everyday for their long distance overnight sleeper trains of up to a hour refueling their locomotives and refilling the water tanks. You can spot these stops on the time schedules for every train. Since these long distance trains involve multiple bags, there are quite a few short smoke stops as people embark and disembark... Don't roam too far, the train won't wait for you to return.
It's a wonderful way to travel. Get a room or roommate if you can. The meals are great and the people you meet are always great. Cheers. I don't fly anymore because I prefer the relaxing train travel. Amtrak employees are always very helpful and very polite.
I spotted your DSLR/mic & GorillaPod SLR-Zoom @ 0:58. I booked a 5000 mi, 4 Amtrak trains loop May '17. Southwest Chief • Sunset Limited • Texas Eagle • Illinois Zephyr I'll have my DSLR/mic and GorillaPod with me too.
I travel long distance on Amtrak and also when I’m home in the San Diego area I ride the Pacific Surfliner between San Diego, Los Angeles & Oxnard,CA. The ride on the Pacific Surfliners is restful, comfortable & relaxing, I don’t have to deal with Freeway & Interstate Highway traffic in urban areas like Washington/Baltimore, Los Angeles/Long Beach/Anaheim, Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago where many of the Interstate highways that are Freeways,Expressways & Turnpikes have and/or are becoming parking lots. Air travel domestically is a hassle & a drudgery.
I took the train to DC and back. The trip there kind of sucked, but the ride home led to encounters with some interesting people, including an off-Broadway stage actor and the bus driver/merch/pyrotechnics guy for a band.
wow what a grand video I loved it and I love train travel Ive took the California zepyer from san jose to chicgo that was a gorogous trip and ive taken the sunset limited all the way to florida to see Disney world when I went the next train ride I want to take is to Williamsburg Virginia. ilove the train is soo cool.
Lol....you guys made me laugh! Thank you! WHY didn't you two get a roomette....to sleep in beds? It's difficult trying to sleep with people walkibg around, opening the doors to potty, all night....lol. Great video, with fun!
The way they do dining (with others) is an absolutely wonderful method of forced socialization that you don't know you are enjoying it that you will miss it so much when you are alone or just the 2 of you. Trains can go many places they can't build highways. This is just one of the best things in America. You guys should have splurged on the Roomette. Holds 2 VERY comfortably; you can stretch out and sleep whenever you want. Top bunk and lower bunk and all your meals are included. I love, love, love it!
As part of the Amtrak Mechanical staff thank you for riding, and hope you had an enjoyable time on your trip.
Hey, so good to see you say grace before eating your meal!
THIS....This is on my bucket list!
Do it!! it was a blast!, it's good to do one time lol
Absolutely go for it! Book a sleeper if you can for the space, privacy, and included meals
Also - book a sleeper because you get an actual *bed*. Sleeping in coach is somewhere between not easy and impossible (source: personal experience with both)

It is so nice to have a good friend that you can travel with.
Really liked this! You guys made me wish I was young and adventurous again. Hope you always keep that adventurous spirit!
It's a lot less painful if you get the little rooms. But obviously that's a lot more money. When I was a kid we did this all the way across Canada, which was cool. The Rockies portion was really nice.

I am doing this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As soon as my house is paid.......which will be in a year!! Thanks for posting this!!!
What a wonderfully pleasant and fun video !! Thank you.

Casandra Buckner.....I have a 8 year old who is obsessed with amtrak.

Thanks for the video. Thinking about catching a flight from the east coast to the west and catching a one way train back to experience this.
I like your style......Lots of good energy. Throughly enjoyed your travelog. I smiled alot... thanks Guys..
I took the train from Tacoma WA to Oakland CA, 24 hrs. Left at 9 AM. WA and OR was one post card scene after the other. I wish I'd have taken a pillow but otherwise a great trip. .

And go next door to the Postal Museum , Awesome !
Your videos are great, Braxton! I love it that you prayed before your meal!
My wife and I did the same trip last year, took Amtrak from BPT CT to Union Station, used the subway to get everywhere we needed, subways were exceptionally clean and easy to use.

Amazing Video.. Loved your trip and enjoyed your humor and the music was great!
Braxton AWESOME video! Watched it a lot and it never get a boring
This is probably the best Amtrak travel vlog I have seen, so well edited. Love your stuff man
Looks like a fun trip. I’d save up for a sleeper❤️
Cute video, glad you loved our beautiful and amazing city, Chicago ☺️.
Fantastic video, from an Australian train freak
What a great video! Thanks for sharing your train adventure.
It resumes at 9:38.
Awesome trip, I love riding the train when I have the time. The California zephyr from San Fran to Los Angeles is beautiful.
I took the Southwest Chief, too....but just till Needles, CA. I LOVE that train & crew...best in Amtrak!
such a cool video, makes me want to travel the whole u.s. by amtrak
Great editing, great quality and of course, great hosts...
Excellent choice of music!
If you ever take this trip again, consider having a sleeping car accommodation, albeit that’s more expensive but it is a unique experience and far better than a coach seat!
What a cool video guys! im about to do my first trip from LA to Austin soon and im excited. Thanks for sharing :)
Greetings from California.
Awesome video guys! I've seen a lot of these train videos and with out question you did on of the best jobs.
Nice job on the video! I have ridden some of your journey and saw a lot of sights that I recognized! And the editing was well done. Thanks for sharing!!
Hey if you like train videos check out this series! ua-cam.com/video/gkvVY8Dn8gw/v-deo.html
very good video, I love flying 6 inches off the ground. My Magic carpet made of steel. I had most of me meals in the snack car, they have cold beer.
I'm hearing a little Arlo Guthrie "City of New Orleans" in there. :)
Such an awesome video!!!! I cant wait to travel like this!!
I took the route from Chicago to Washington DC and back twice in coach. Won't do it again without a sleeper room lol
Thank you for sharing your adventure with us!!! 😍😍 My husband and I are thinking of doing this!!
Nice travelogue, fellows! Thanks for posting. That was a lot of miles.
thanks! had a ton of fun doing it!
Believe me, its much more relaxing riding on a train seeing the countryside, than driving a car being dazed by highway white lines...
I love Chicago! You did a good job on this video.
Genius video, guys, loved the music and your narration, too. I'm doing DC out to Portland OR in Feb, I only WISH I could do coach like you but I just gotta have my roomette for alllll those hours hehe. I applaud you, for sure, looking forward to more of your work...👍
I love seeing the Metrolink in the end! I live in Fontana, so I usually take the San Bernardino Line, but Riverside is like one transfer away!
Seems like nice guys. Good luck in your travels!
The fountain in Chicago is the one that's in the opening credits of 'Married..with Children'
Great video, guys. Looked like a great time.
This video is great Amtrak should pay you.
Miss you guys, it was good trip thanks so much for share
15:24 Discover there is more than one place called Las Vegas!
I love this video! Looks like a ton of fun!
Your editing is great, man! I'm glad you had a nice time!

Just watched this video twice. Great editing work and cuts. Must have taken you a ton of time to get this baby out the door. Much appreciated!
This was such a fun little video lol, I enjoyed it. I want to do this! I'd rather do it with a friend, but I feel like I may end up doing it solo 😎
AyeGetItBroady where you thinking bout going

After a week head back along the north, Seattle to Chicago to Pittsburgh back to Philly. Cardinal 51, SouthWest Chief 3, Coast Starlight 14, Empire Builder 8, Capital Limited 30, Pennsylvanian 42. Always wanted to, finally giving it a go.
Thank you for sharing, it’s been my go to video to share to others about the adventure of it all.
Braxton can you please provide names of all songs and singers in video. I think the video was great and hope you both enjoyed ourselves. I loo forward to watching more videos to come from you both.
I’m on to Florida on the Amtrak this Sunday!
Havnt heard this song in over a decade good choice
I'm taking a train to Ft. Lauderdale over spring break; thanks for uploading this video! I kinda know what to expect from Amtrak now... Maybe :)
lauren m. croke do it!
Just booked it! NYC to Florida, 24 hrs. Should be an adventure! Maybe I'll vlog my trip like you did.
Heyy quick question! You got the student rate, right? Did anyone ask to see your student ID?
Only when we were buying our tickets
UA-cam recommended this video for me (likely 'cos of my love of train travel in general and my exclusive use of Amtrak for travel in CONUS), and I gotta say It's FREAKING SWEET Y'ALL!

B Perry that's actually a solid idea!
Braxton Young what kind of camera are you using to film this?
I’m taking a trip from Boston to Cleveland on Sunday (probably in coachclass) so I’ll have to do this!
What is better than praying over Subway? I'd say nothing. Amen! 2:37
Great Video!!
It's a wonderful way to travel. Get a room or roommate if you can. The meals are great and the people you meet are always great. Cheers. I don't fly anymore because I prefer the relaxing train travel. Amtrak employees are always very helpful and very polite.
Watched this on fire stick app and had to look you up. Really enjoyed it thanks.
That was enjoyable, nice work.
Great Video! Very well done!
Sick vid man. Really helpful seeing the spaces throughout the train.
The video looked healthy to me.
Great video!
I spotted your DSLR/mic & GorillaPod SLR-Zoom @ 0:58.
I booked a 5000 mi, 4 Amtrak trains loop May '17.
Southwest Chief • Sunset Limited • Texas Eagle • Illinois Zephyr
I'll have my DSLR/mic and GorillaPod with me too.
that's awesome!!! you'll have a blast on the trip!
It's a very good experience for taking train...how many levels actually have
you guys are rad.
Lol that's hilarious, you'll definitely meet some wacky people on Amtrak
Braxton Young Agreed. It takes a different kind of person to take the train.
I’m planning this exact trip this summer for my birthday! Can’t wait I’ve been trying to find videos of people coming from atlanta like me!
Great video guys.
wow what a grand video I loved it and I love train travel Ive took the California zepyer from san jose to chicgo that was a gorogous trip and ive taken the sunset limited all the way to florida to see Disney world when I went the next train ride I want to take is to Williamsburg Virginia. ilove the train is soo cool.
how you like that 7 hour layover in Chi town, dosen,t matter train bus plane you have to wait in Chicago....
I loooved it! it was so much fun! also it's good to get nice and tired before you get on a train for 42 hours lol
You guys are awesome👍🏻
Rocko777 hey I really appreciate it!
You are totally right! The dining went way longer than I expected which was a great experience.
