My favorite parts of the malls were the music and book stores as well as the food vendors but malls aren't like this anymore thanks for the great memories.🇺🇲📺🇺🇲
Man,you describe all those memories so eloquently, it truly makes me want to hop in a time machine & go back and experience it all firsthand! Also, how the BEEP is Christmas less than two weeks away??! Time is zooming past 😵💫🥺
I hate that as well age, everything is too darn fast. As kids life was too slow, lol. I'm trying not to think about 12 days left. I want more Christmas! But your compliments and kind words were a gift, thank you
I LOVE going to the mall year round (I'm a mall rat) but especially during the holiday seasons (starting with Halloween) 🎃. We went to the mall just this week. I also enjoy watching the movie Scenes from a mall every year. It takes place during the Christmas season and is very nostalgic.
What great memories, but it kinda makes me sad these Christmas cheer-charged malls are now becoming relics. That settles it, I'm visiting one before Christmas
Good Sir, you hit the nail on the head!!!!! The Christmas “mall experience” of the 80’s was magical to us kids EXACTLY BECAUSE we didn’t have A CARE IN THE WORLD and were free of today’s constant media battering. You summed it up in two sentences. Thank you for that. I spent almost every Saturday at the mall between 11/01 and 12/31 of every year of my youth. The arcades, movie theater, and food were my mission. Great vid!
I find it sad how the magic of Christmas is going away. It used to be such a fun experience. Go to the mall - wander around with bunch of other people also enjoying the holiday. Do some shopping, get some snacks, food, see a movie. Now, its Amazon, Walmart and Target. Places to acquire Things, period. There is no 'shopping' to it - or thought - or care - or shared experience. Everything has just become utility.
There's nothing like Mall shopping during the holidays. Sights, sounds, deals, and etc made the experience fun for me. Your video described the feeling just right! My memories of the Mall is in the '90s and upward, so it was nice to see what the malll was like in the '80s! A KB Toys stop was a Must for my bro and me, along with Toys R Us. Barbie/Bratz Dolls, VHS/DVD along with videogames were my favorites. We got cookies at The Great Cookie and at a sit-down restaurant or food court.
Kay Bee was actually more expensive than Toys R Us unless the item was on clearance. I know this because I worked for both stores at some point in the nineties.
Working there, I know you'd know, but my memories by the 90s was clearly every toy was like 1 dollar more at TRU. But it may have just been certain toys.
i remember the mall but mom did most christmas shopping after christmas to get those sales unless she saw something really good on black friday . whats funny is i dont think we went to the mall much for shopping but for the ambiance i guess . as everything was decorated and some stores had the fragrance smells of cinnamon or some other christmas smell . course downtown still had the older stores that decorated their windows woolworths was one it had the diner inside so you smelled the food as well . the mall had the book stores and record stores and toy stores clothes stores shoe stores and the meat and cheese store and the food vendors it was a combination of sounds and smells , the movie theater and arcade so many places and it was a sea of people . the mall santa yeah think 74 was last time i went to see santa by the 80's well teen and then adult before the end of the 80's. I do miss the mall this time of year course would i really go to it maybe in the morning just to avoid the mass of people as everyone seems grumpy now thats one thing i dont much remember grumpy people at christmas most just shopped and were smiling and excited . you could people watch you didnt have to shop and still have a blast good times oct 2001 i went to a mall in NY with my then girlfriend place was already decorated for christmas it was huge . was last mall i went to sure miss all the stores and how they decorated course i miss folks saying marry christmas to a rare thing today oh crap i wrote a book sorry thanks for a great video and marry christmas
Lol. A book is fine. I'm glad this inspired you. Yes, often we went for the ambience, or what my mother called window shopping. I say Merry Christmas still...I just read my audience first, lol. You're so right, far less grumpy people. If they were, they were courteous and didn't show it like today. Thanks again.
the toy store in my mall started off as circus world. then later it turns into kay bee toy store. this was the best place to find toys for cheap prices. i bought a few game's & transformers there as a kid in the 80s.
Really good video.... as someone who lives in a different country, i gotta admit, besides SEARS, i dont recognize one store but it doesn't matter cause you capture the magic of the malls in the 80s and 90s.... even if malls here in Québec are still very popular, its not the same as it use to be.... but then again, nothing is!
Thank you for chiming in. Love Quebec, by the way. My grandparents were French Canadian. Malls seem to have sored more in the US, but they were once home to magic.
Sorry to hear that. When I'm there the other people just melt away. As a kid I was on a mission, as an adult....when I do go....those others just melt away, I don't really notice them as I'm in my own world. I realize not everyone sees it that way.
@@GENXPERIENCE For me, the noise is so much echo it makes me feel claustrophobic. I usually have to leave. One Christmas Eve my boyfriend and I went to the mall, jam packed, he propped me up against a wall and said “just stay there, don’t move, I’ll be right back.” I was majorly freaking out! lol, so silly but true. Merry Christmas!☃️🎄🎅🏻
Just stores on the outside of the mall now. Offices inside. Or just empty. We only had one leveling our mall back then. The Emporium, Bon Marche, Sears, Montgomery Ward, All the fun little shops. Yes. Hickory Farms when they had a whole store. Books at J.K. Gill. Got my dog Scooter at The Piped Piper Pet Palace. Oregon Craft and Floral, before there was a Michael's. King's Table was a great Buffet place.
I remember the 80s.Well at them all, it was a wonderful time. There's lots of life and activity. And you get lost for hours and then search for hours looking for your mother. It's not so much as the malls are dead.America is dead too! We are some strange times...
Malls used to have nativity scenes near where Santa asking kids what they wanted was located during the 80s. Those were permanently removed in the 90s by liberals complaining that seeing Christ during Christmas time was offensive, so we should stick solely to consumerism.
Without taking sides, or lumping people all together....the change upsets me. All were welcome and represented back then...as it should be today. It can all work together. Nothing has to be cut out. That's why yesteryear was so wonderful. Thank you for the comment.
So sad. I don't remember a Nativity at our mall. But, I do remember in the 60s, maybe 70s too, the large white Nativity scene in front of the Oregon Sate Capitol building. That was so beautiful. At least I can find pictures it online.
So many memories of Christmas at the mall, miss all the different stores that are long gone.
I would give anything to visit my hometown mall at the holidays of the 80s just one more time! :)
I know the feeling. Bittersweet
I loved shopping for music and eating at the food court!❤
My favorite parts of the malls were the music and book stores

thanks for the great memories.🇺🇲📺🇺🇲
Thank you for watching and commenting. I certainly grew to enjoy the music stores.

Oh, hearing this makes me happy someone enjoys it as much as I. Good on you

Where I live (Dallas Texas), all of our malls are still very busy. We have 6 to choose from.
You have to. It won't be the same, BUT, you won't regret walking through and just remembering. Thanks for watching.
I've heard some regions still have some thriving. That's nice.

Hickory farms samples Mmmmmmmmm. I haven't thought about those sense I was little.
It's a nice memory jogging, isn't it?
Thank you for all the videos and memories this year, Gen Xperience! I know you've worked harder than Santa to bring us the cheer.
You're kind...and kind is the only thing matters. Thank you for watching and enjoying.

You hit it on the head. Add in all the "never leave the house" crap and we've got some pretty lame modern holiday traditions.
Has everyone watched the peewee's Christmas special?

Prices were manageable there

Crowded malls give me panic attacks!

I liked your LOTS OF LIFE. You are correct, people seem dead, and they're all missing the point of life...to LIVE
