  • We'll start with a discussion as to why ridiculously priced luxury watches aren't selling. This directly relates to the knife market too, especially autos. It has a lot to do with influencers like myself introducing and convincing my audience of the amazing value of such knives as this AKC Ace auto.
    For the small price paid it will deliver the 1st and 2nd cool of a $300 auto for most knife enthusiasts...watch the auto knife makers come out with "value" models to compete. This Ace has D2 steel, wicked fast opening, some good colors, and a dagger blade. Also great is its "F16" OTF brother (below) which is even less expensive.

Hahahaha 3w The Nutnfancy Project Nice 3w Joe Btw cool knife, I have the lightening after seeing your review got one for 30 bucks long time ago. I agree 3w Jerry Hall Buying two 1 3w The Nutnfancy Project LMK how you like it Jerry. These are really cool autos for the money...betcha ya love them! 1 3w Jerry Hall Thanks Nutnfancy 3w Paul Kainz So you started off talking about watches and while you were talking I was thinking to myself about what the max I would ever spend on a watch would be. I came to the conclusion that $85 is my limit and here is why. I get the artistry and incredible precision that go into watches, and if thats what makes you happy then go for it. But my $15 dollar Aquaforce watch tells time just as good as that $30k Montblanc watch, and if I break the Aquaforce its no big deal I can just spend another $15 and get a replacement. I've heard the argument that expensive watches are like expensive cars, but if you get an expensive car it usually can go pretty freaking fast or it has a very smooth luxurious ride with tons of crazy features. Watches all go the same speed, one second at a time. I did get that Citizen Chandler watch that you reviewed a few weeks (months?) ago and I love it! I wore it today with some fancy clothes and paired the brown strap with a brown belt and shoes, boy did I feel fancy. So I understand the appeal to watches, but anything over $85 is just not for me. Love all the reviews Nutn keep crushing it! 2 3w Joe I dunno about $85, I've seen the citizen nighthawk in person and it is killer. Those are in the 150 to 200 range. Also the Orient Ray 2 is amazing and it's in the same price range. If you open up to the 200 range you can get something that'll last a lifetime. I'm not going to reach that high anytime soon but eventually a ray 2 will be on my wrist 3w Greg Malcom Just bought my first Microtech OTF. Went with the Utratech in the Apocalyptic Bounty Hunter. Love it. I already knew you liked the Ultatech Nutn, else i wouldn't have bought it. 3w The Nutnfancy Project "Went with the Utratech in the Apocalyptic Bounty Hunter" Oh man, that's a great choice Greg. I like it will make you gear happy. And that knife will retain its value and you can turn in some years if you wish. 1 3w Blaine Bond ey Nutn. I understand you’re likely not wanting to sell it but if you do I would love to get my hands on the 007 microtech you have been holding onto. I’d pay the premium! My name should say why I’d love to have it 😉 3w The Nutnfancy Project You're right, that knife would be a great addition to your collection. I might do it. Hard to separate from that beloved knife however! LM think on it a bit. Drop your contact info via message please. 3w Luke Alan Surface Love the KRV’s Nutn! Keep em coming! 3w The Nutnfancy Project You got it, more inbound 1 3w Chris Wow 60 bucks!!!!!!! That's unbelievable and it looks like overall fit and finish it's nice! If I didn't live the commifornia I would buy one right now! 3w Brad Fegan Always wondered how the AKC Concord knives were. Been eyeing them for awhile. Nice Szanto watch. 3w Faustus With regard to restrictive local knife laws, I'm actually surprised more of them aren't challenged on 2nd Amendment grounds. Remember, the 2A says "the right to keep and bear arms..." not "firearms" per se, and certainly the 18th century framers of the constitution would have considered edged weapons-bayonets, cavalry sabres, and the like-common battlefield implements of the time-to fall under the heading of "arms." 1 3w The Nutnfancy Project "Remember, the 2A says "the right to keep and bear arms..." not "firearms" per se" I could not agree more. Indeed arms fall into multiple categories and the wise forefathers wanted top armament to be in the hands of the citizens. 1 3w Shawn Jewell I may actually buy one! Neat knife and a great review as always. I spit my drink when you took out the plane 😂 3w TNSheep I'm trying to avoid watching this video because I"m going to probably buy it based on the blade shape along with the cost. I just cannot stomach buying a knife for 300-500 dollars that isn't hand made by somebody, aka, a custom knife maker. Even then I think that is a little high, but people gotta make money. So microtech is out of bounds for me on the knife market due to price/quality differences. Joshua kinnunen More inexpensive options are always good. 3w Paul Carter try the MTN otf knife off of amazon, I've got 2 and they've been great for an exact copy (other than blade steel) of a microtech for an $80 price point... -thx nutn 3w Michael B warner KRV'S ROCK! I love to see TNP knife nation going strong. Once again with another sick blade. I can't believe it for the price what a deal. 3w Michael B warner I think AUS 8 is still a good blade steel. It takes a wicked edge in the EPA. With my experience it has pretty good edge retention as well. I still rock the Ontario Rat 1 folder in AUS 8 which is another really great knife. You need to keep it oiled and take care of it for sure, but that's the same for all blades regardless the steel type. 3w Harold Galen McPheron Cool knife!!!! 3w Lon N A box of Twinkies tossed into a Weight Watchers meeting..thanks Nutn. 3w Bluegill097 I love the thought of the knife crowd freaking out over the embedded LONG watch review! 2w Chris Marchi Detachment One?!...love it 2w Chris Marchi Good looking blade 2w Russ K didn't know you had an f-16 from my hometown!"

    I'm one of those young people interested in knives, guns, etc and I have young friends who have the same interests. Money is extremely tight. Nothing is bought on impulse. I can tell you from experience that trying to convince/suggest those same friends to buy even a $100 knife is not easy (it was the ESSEE 5 I was recommending) - $50 is more our price range.

      Totally agreed. I'm 23 and nothing is bought that isn't researched and budgeted for. I have 2 friends that buy middle of the road to high end knives and everyone else I know buys $5 knives, puts a wicked edge on it and that's that. If it breaks no big deal, if they lose it they'll pick up another one at walmart. I enjoy my $100+ knives but I have very few.

      Unfortunately, it is tough to break people of Walmart culture. When everything they own is cheap, reasonably durable, and easily replaceable...it is tough to convince people to spend extra. I've had people use my much more expensive things and they love it...but refuse to buy one.
      For me, I like to buy quality. The best I can reasonably afford (or willing to save up to afford). I'll try to get to that point of diminishing returns.

    I'm so glad autos are legal in MI now. Although, from the legal jargon I've tried to decipher, double edged OTF blades are still illegal (along with daggers, stilettos, etc). Blows but oh well. I ordered an OTF as soon as I found out autos were legal, lol.

    Just to be clear, not everything to everyone is about budget and simplcity. As an avid watch fan, with many swiss and saxon watches, it is often more about the craft itself. Horology, in the true sense is about innovation in time keeping. While quartz watches are the best you can get in that regard, they can completely lack spirit. This is so for many fashion watches which are an absolute rip off. I would look more towards microbrands with automatic movements (off the shelf...eta, seiko, or miyota, etc). These would provide a person with individuality, a solid, reliable time keeper, for a fraction of the cost while usually allowing for individuality through design. Needless to say... I love this channel, and agree with his ideas, but they are his ideas and opinions and thus should be taken as such. So while you may scoff at buying a 30000$ watch, someone who cares more about quality might scoff at buying the toyota of pistols, knives, and watches, etc... Its all in the eye of the beholder, now...I have too many microtechs...where can I get one of these cheap but fun knives!

    I work as a police officer and carry an auto in my pocket everyday. The knife I carry has a safety, but I never used it, until.... One day I reached into my pocket and sliced a decent part of my finger off because the knife had actuated in my pocket. To this day, I do always use the safety.

    Been Thinking pricing on the knives nowadays for past few years now. Funny 10 years ago I would had never gotten a knife and been happy with it from China. You knew if they came from China they were made terrible and the quality and material just wasn’t there. Not to mention all the copies out there, stealing from other American made companies. But 2 years ago I bought a knife from DHgate after seeing a different youtuber. The knife was said to have good materials on it and looked like nothing saw in regular knife market etc.. so I bought it. Figured if the titanium turned out to be aluminum and if the so called s30v was really d4 I would be ok since it was only going for $95. It showed up here 4 to 5 weeks later(yes takes some time to get here in the mail from there at times) but when it got here I was blown away at the quality and found out it really was a titanium frame lock not aluminum and the blade was actually what they said it was. Which still to this day you can’t believe what they say blade steel is, but spend little more on some of em that have good records they usually do you well. What totally threw me at the time was the well designed titanium pocket clip they made special to fit that knife.. not just a clip you could get on 100 diff brands of knives. Also I know it’s not the same exact titanium we use over here in the states but it’s still better then just heavy steal scales and more durable then aluminum So after getting that knife and was totally shocked and extremely happy with it after not finding any flaws in the knife. Even machinery done on the inside was perfect not just thrown together with outside to tolerances. The whole knife was awesome. And all I could think to my self if I got this knife from a regular site I shopped here in the stated with this look, quality, material, etc.. I would had easily spent well over $200 up to $350. So normally a good year I’d get 2 to 3 knives from $200 to $350 and 5 to 6 knives a year over $85 and up to 200. Sometimes went lower pricing if you Nutnfancy recommended a knife like Spyderco tenacious say so I knew the knife was made well and was worth paying that low.
    Well now said to say since getting that knife from China and then one more with just as happy results I got to say I only get maybe 4 to 5 knifes in the states from $85 to $200. But I haven’t spent over $200 since getting that knife from China since. Which does drive me crazy cause I loved my zt., microtech etc...heck haven’t even gotten a We knife yet cause they cost to much now. But from dhgate and sites like that after shopping around and checking on recommendations and reviews of seller trace history I have gotten least 10 to 12 knives from them a year with pricing from $45 to $200...still makes me little sick and def upsetting to not buy more from our American knife companies but to be honest, why should I not have well built knives I can afford in my price range with great fit and finish with great material to for half the price at most times. If I got to wait a few more weeks for the knife to get here I’m totally fine with that, they even started to make their own style otf knives over there and not just copying mircotechs etc..which I have gotten 3 of em and blown away by them to..
    Anyway the whole reason started on this rant of my shame of were have been spending more of my money for knives and getting more knives then normal a year at cheaper price with just as good material and quality Is just like you say in this video. These knife companies need to start watching out, they can’t keep using their marketing and have their stuff cost 3 to 4 times the amount others are selling their stuff for with same exact material and same quality put into their knives as we have been doing here for decades. I know they have to be taken a major hit with a lot of people like me because a lot of these knives you see being sold over there now even have American knife makers and designers selling them their knife profile to be made in bulk etc.. and we already seen companies like Kizer and WE come over to the states and are blowing away the competition they have with their knife designs and pricing and are charging higher cost here in the states then they would if sold over there..I’m all for buying American but I’m also buy what I can afford and be happy with what I can get and afford etc.. so once again if I can get that same feeling would get buying a ZT, microtech, Or higher end Spyderco that would cost me more then $280 and I can get same material and quality for a knife design I like being sold by their designers not copied for $85 to $200 I’d be stupid not to do it..

    Tight tolerances, good machining, and good steel used to be expensive. Not anymore tho. My eafengrow d2 flipper is absolute perfection. Centering lockup tolerances everything that you could expect from a $500 knife just $20 shipped from China. Serenmu makes a knockoff sebenza for like $13 and it's as perfect as the real thing. Why the hell would I pay over $100 for a non-custom knife. Microtec still outrageous, Benchmade going to shit and the Chinese are making leaps and bounds. It's gonna get to the point where you cant compete without production in China.

    Being a watch guy and lusting after a couple luxury watches ( Breitling Superocean II 44
    and Grand Seiko SBGA231) I can understand why you see watches like these to be obsolescence. But comparing a hand made mechanical watch to a mass produced Chinese watch is a little unfair. In my opinion watches in this day and age are superfluous because everyone has a phone that has way more capability that any watch ever has. Watches are all purely 2nd type of cool and if they aren't Swiss, German, American or Japanese made I'm not interested. When it comes to automatic knives I agree with you 100%! Most automatic knives are no different that a manually operated knife but seem to cost about 25% more ( I'm looking at you Benchmade and your 8600) Manual version $200 but put a spring in it and bam $250! I think Kershaw has done a pretty good job showing knife manufactures that you can make and American made auto at an affordable price. Love what you do, keep it up. Regards, Silas

      Kershaw Launch 7 = CPM154 = $85

      dave wenzel I’ve never had either fail. I like my Kershaw better because of the 4” blade and the price tag. Protech didn’t have their TR-4 on the market so I got the TR-3. The TR-3 is a great knife, no doubt about it. But the Kershaw is almost $100 less, has a really good steel and has a 4” blade. I would hate to lose my Kershaw on a job site. It would break my heart to lose my Protech. So I would rather risk my Kershaw at work than my Protech.

    We do have cheap labor in Indiana, haha. About 5 years ago I was doing QC in a transmission factory for 10/hour. The machine mechanics were getting 21-27. The rust belt collapse left a whole generation of people here with serious skills and experience all available for a lot fewer jobs. Luckily investors have started recognizing that.

      a lot of Cold Steel knives are $180 or better too though..Kershaw is about the best bang for your buck in the world of folding knives IMO.I got my M390 Link for $70..my most expensive Kershaw is my carbon fiber Knockout in M390 and it was $130 which is a damn good price for the materials..I paid $110 for my Bareknuckle in 20CV and it’s the best Kershaw on the market IMO..a Benchmade in these materials would be $200 or better..if that is over someone’s budget their is some great Civivi knives like the Elementum in D2 for around $50..then there is always QSPs,Artisans and CRJB knives for a little under $50..or the OKC RAT and RAT 2 in D2 and several Chinese made Kershaws in D2 for under $50 as well..you can get the classic Buck 110 and 112..you can even get some decent autos and OTFs for around $50 with the Boker Strike and Kalashnikov and AKC OTFs..even the cheapo $25 Lightning OTF is a decent option for what it is..as for fixed blades,the Spyderco Bow River is around $30..OKC has several solid fixed blades in 1095 for under $50,I bought my nephew a SP2 for just $26..the Gerber Prodigy is $50,the Buck 119 is around $50..Schrade has multiple knives in 1095 from around $50-$30 though the heat treatments are often hit or miss..then of course there are some great Cold Steel options for under $50 like the SRK,SRK-C,Recon Tanto and the GI Tanto all in SK5..Condor has several great options under $50..then last but certainly not least are the amazing Morakniv options,I carried a $10 Mora 511 as my main hunting,camping,hiking and Bushcraft knife for around $15 years.I tired to replace it multiple times with something nicer and more expensive but after taking those many replacements out,I would always come back home to throw those knives into a drawer and bringing that $10 Mora back out..after all those years with the Mora 511 I have finally found a couple knives that I felt were worthy to replace it with (I now cycle between my Bradford Guardian 4 in N690 and my S35VN ESEE 3..I also have the Guardian 4 in M390 but while M390 has better edge retention than N690,N690 is tougher so I prefer it for my outdoors gear..If I’m camping I also bring my ESEE Junglas for the heavy work.Its an excellent chopper and I’m comfortable using it for occasional batoning)..for a big chopper fixed blade Cold Steel has great options for under $50,Kershaw has the Camp 10 for under $50 and there are several good Schrade choppers for under $50 but once again,that Schrade heat treatment is often a roll of the dice..I’ve had several Schrade knives that were absolute beasts and then I’ve had several that would chip,crack,break extremely easy and I’ve had some that would wrap and edges roll extremely easy..OKC has several great options for $50 or less too..in other words,there are many great knives for $50 or less on the market..I’m no knife snob,one day I may be carrying my Benchmade Crooked River,Spyderco PM 2,Spyderco Autonomy 2 or Microtech Ultratech but the next day I may be carrying my OKC RAT 2,Buck 112,CJRB Crag or Boker Kalashnikov 74..to me a good knife is a good knife regardless what it costs..I’m still willing to splurge and buy a nice Benchmade,ZT,Spyderco,Microtech,Pro-Tech,etc but boy does it feel good to be able to order something like the OKC RAT 2,CJRB Feldspar,Artisan Osprey and a Civivi Elementum all together for less money than that one nice ZT,Benchmade,Spyderco,etc

    I collect clones of stupid high priced for no real reason but greed ! So called American knife maker so called custom knife ( if it were custom there could be only one ) As a protest to the greed !
    An American would give an American a good price for a good product ! Cnc machined production knives are not custom knives no matter who drew them ( thats what they call a knife maker these day's ) they buy material put it in the cnc machine and then put them together ! The so called knife maker don't make steel they don't grind blades they don't shape handles ! They push the button that gets things started ! And then try and charge custom knife prices $800.00 medford $800.00 reeves for knives that most like only cost $50.00 production cost in America ! And then say the Chinese not only use subsandard material but substandard construction ( when they make them the very same way ) and that the Chinese are ripping them off ( never heard reeves say that he was being ripped off ) ! I say it's karma ! It's their turn to be ripped off ( and if they don't start competeing they are going out of business and I will not cry for their greedy asses ) instead of their rip off being protected by law !
    It's time they competed for the market like everyone else in the world ! For production knives !
    Real custom knives go for it ! The sky is the limit ! But cnc machine clones a % over production price and competition for who builts it best and sells for less ( you know just like it was a fair market price for a great product ) !
    And enough about stealing Ideas or designs ! Every knife on the maket including so called custom knife are all inspired by one another ! Reeves traper mod and liner lock mod coffin handle mod and the 940 modified spey blade ( theres no such thing as a a reverse tanto ) and glueing pivots bs ( your so friggin good make a pivot that fits ) !

    Seems to me that the button needs to be on the left (looking at the button side with the tip up) so that the thumb goes to it on draw. With it on the right you have to pull the thumb back away from the gripping movement to open then re-adjust. Also, it places the button into the pocket opening versus the pocket crease where it's less likely to get actuated accidentally. Well, unless you're a lefty.

  • @wpherigo1
    @wpherigo1 5 років тому

    You got a lot of this wrong, Nutn.
    BLUF - (bottom line up front) mass market rip-offs gut the incentive to come up with new, innovative designs. The money making aspect has been removed. Promoting “cheap” kills the original line.
    The bottom is not dropping out of luxury watch market. The bottom is dropping out on industry shows Basel World infighting is tanking BaselWorld. Online marketing is gutting certain aspects of industry trade shows.
    Bigger problem is that it’s easier nowaday to rip-off someone else’s design and get it manufactured cheaply. Oris put the time and effort into the design and manufacturing of a high quality mechanical watch. The Chinese rip-off the look, use a low cost movement and companies rebrand it and mark it way up.
    The Taiwanese have done the same thing with this knife. Someone else did the work - they just copy it and manufacture it.
    An “homage” honors what it emulates. Rip-offs are not homages.

  • @sluggger
    @sluggger 5 років тому

    The luxury watch market is honestly probably as strong as it's ever been at this point. If anything they have reversed a slight downturn. The number of entry level luxury timepieces have a lot of engagement with young professionals, albeit niche, but given the pricing and the aspirational aspect of this market, and its small marketshare of the overall watch market, they can move far less units and be successful. I wouldn't look at Basel World as a market indicator, I would look at more practical things like for instance the Rolex situation. Look at the price of Rolex and the waitlists. You either have to know somebody or wait for over a year in many markets to buy even a stainless steel sport model Rolex, not precious metals, not the rarer references. Just stainless steel sports models, the mainstream references of their company. And you won't touch them for less than about 10,000 dollars. Now I'm not naive, they can and probably are using means of artificial scarcity to gin up these prices and the demand. But it doesn't matter if it works and if the business model remains sustainable. And frankly it has been and continues to be. If the quartz crisis couldn't bury these giants, I'm not sure anything can. The advent of mobile phones didn't put even a dent into luxury watches compared to the quartz crisis. The iPhone and the Apple Watch and smartwatches in general didn't either. The truth is they've already reformulated their position into a place that can withstand the advent of cheaper and more accurate technology. The crazier and crazier luxury and more and more extraneous complications keeps a certain segment of Switzerland happy, the sale of cheaper (sub $1000) watches built from ebauche parts keeps the supply chains at ETA and Valjoux moving and the rest of the Swiss market happy. It's a pretty well oiled machine that frankly functions a lot like a legal, ethical, non-violent cartel. Outside of Switzerland we've seen wild growth too, as German watchmaking has hit a resurgence and the Japanese market, though a lot older than most people realize, has today more marketshare in the luxury side than they've ever had, and are pushing crazy boundaries with the Grand Seiko. Even in China where the inability to protect copyrights and patents has stymied a lot of companies from doing anything but building other peoples' watches on the cheap, we're actually seeing a nascent, artisan, luxury watch market form around some microbrands. And, as far as cheaper options in both quartz and mechanical, we've never as consumers had more choices.

    I own $70 autos and $250 autos... I can tell the difference in quality. You get what you pay for (to a point). It's not to say that a $70 auto is bad, or that it can't be a fine edc, but don't kid yourself, it isn't close to being on the same level as something like a Microtech. Not only the opening/closing action, but the quality of the steel and materials, and durability of the build.

    Eh, I'd spend the extra $30 on a Kershaw Launch 1. Better steel, American made, fast, light and low profile enough that you don't even notice it in your pocket. I've carried mine every day for over a year doing anything and everything, never once had it open on accident. Fits my large hands well, and though the traction is lacking, the handle shape and choil make it lock into your hand really nicely.
