Chickadees are one of my favorite birds. I painted a watercolor of one a couple months ago that took me WAY longer. I ended up going mixed media as I struggled with my paint. I am very surprised to see that come out so great without at least a light sketch beforehand. I nearly always have to do some sort of pre-sketch. I love the soft look too. Lovely work.

Hi Radically, Interesting that you went into mixed media with your originally planned watercolor. Some of my watercolor paintings that went sideways, mostly from when I was first starting. Instead of throwing them away. I can cover them with gesso and do mixed media with them. That way nothing is wasted. If nothing else, I can make mixed media backgrounds and when the mood hits me, a mixed media picture on one of them.
I love the softness in your watercolor style, and love that you are taking your time. It shows that you know what you are doing! I'm a beginner of 1 year, and want to learn how to paint birds. Thank you so much!

I am a beginner and I am soaking up all the information I can and was happy to stumble upon your website. Just wonderful. You draw absolutely great. I can hardly draw a straight line! I use to pain in oils for 20 years but have decided to try my hand in watercolor because the results are so delicate and looking at your work is beautiful. I apologize that I can answer after so long
I just finished this painting! I've never done watercolour before and so I decided to just do the bird on the right. It came out nice, however, the head became a bit messy. I definitely noticed that my watercolour dried up quicker than Tatiana's, which made it a bit hard to come back and paint over it. I'm super happy though :)

Bella Drying speed could also be down to the paper you are using. A non-cotton pulp paper may have less sizing for example. 100% cotton paper is the way to go if you can. If not, something like a Canson Montval or bockingford are two of the better pulp papers.
This is lovely and delicate. It seems like you need to have a very very steady hand to draw in the fine details. I struggle with the daintiness of painting birds which is why mine always come out looking too heavy handed and pretty awful. :D
