These jingles serve as a great memory from the years when WBLI changed music formats from Top 40 to Adult Contemporary from 1991 to about 1995 or 1996. As a, now, former listener of 41 years I can remember looking back on many great years listening to great music WBLI played. I first listened back in 1978 and some of the music played at that time was The Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac and so many others! There was such a great assortment of hits that kept playing through the years. It was mostly a Top 40 music format! The call letters of the station, currently known as WBLI, started back in 1971. There was some other station call letters dated back to 1958. It was told in 1974, that if the station did not pick up listenership, then the plug was going to be pulled on them. In 1975, changes were made and for the next few years, Disco played and listenership increased greatly and would end up being the most listened-to station, well in the 1980's, which was my generation! There was a great morning show then hosted by Barry Neal. The 80's was primarily the decade for me that I heard mostly, WBLI! I was able to remember so many songs and even those from the 60's and 70's, because it was heard quite a bit! I moved from Long Island in June of 1989 and couldn't hear WBLI from 230 miles away living in another state. No internet back then! In 1991, there had been some new music formats that came on to the set. Some formats were hip-hop and Alternative. A lot of people started listening to the new formats that was out and maybe some other ones too, they left the Top 40 music stations in droves. It left many stations, like WBLI, with less listenership and was figuring out what to do. Well, starting in 1990 or 1991, in order to keep WBLI afloat, they changed to an Adult Contemporary format. I found out and heard the changed format while visiting family on Thanksgiving Day 1991. The stereo was on and I heard a song that was not in the Top 40 music format of that time. I would listen to WBLI a few more times while visiting Long Island in the early to mid 1990's. It was a period of a few years that WBLI had a good format playing, but then came the period from 1995 to 1997 when Top 40 radio stations were rebounding after a slump of a few years. Personally, in my mind, WBLI should've never went back to the Top 40 format. Some other station could've done that. WBLI was fine with playing variety music from decades past. I first heard WBLI on the internet back in 1996 and for the next 23 years, I heard some of the music being played on there just being absolute gunk. There was some good songs heard too, but it was clear to see, that older generations knew that music today is just not the same. It's not music. I manage to tolerate the music for the love of the station, until January 22, 2020. I just couldn't tolerate hearing it anymore and I turned the station off, after 41 years. Again, WBLI should've never left the AC format. it could've ended being like what WALK-FM is today. The station needs to abandon the Top 40 format and for good! There's no music today. Nothing. WBLI, do the right thing. Bring back the station that generations of listeners past knew and loved.
