STORYLINE:
Deir al-Balah in the Gaza Strip has offered refuge for Palestinians escaping the war between Israel and Hamas in the besieged territory.
Thousands of displaced from nearby Gaza City and the northern part of the Strip have set up sprawling tented settlements in the town, including along the Mediterranean Sea shore.
Deir al-Balah now risks being unable to cope as tens of thousands of people are fleeing from Rafah as Israel prepares to press closer to the southern city's crowded center.
More than half of Gaza’s population has been sheltering in Rafah.
The war began on Oct. 7 after an attack against Israel by Hamas that killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians.
About 250 people were taken hostage.
Israel's offensive has killed more than 35,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry in Gaza.
