Don't get me wrong, it's good and can make you feel like a badass... if used sparingly. In chill maps, though, where stakes aren't high and you're just getting from point A to B, chill music is the way to go, IMO. Sonic is truly a product of the 80s, the components that created Sonic as the Sega mascot came from the culture of the 80s and then it was perfected by the start of the 90s for the debut.
I love the choice of Japanese pop music, really bringing Sonic back to his musical roots when they had Japanese pop musicians composing the soundtrack to the first two games
Yep. Like for example the ending song of Sonic 2 when you blow up the death egg and fall back to earth before getting caught by Tails in the plane, that song was actually a real song with lyrics and everything. It's called Sweet Sweet Sweet by the band Dreams Come True.
This game does the one thing that all other 3D Sonic games keep failing at over and over: You keep Sonic's momentum going! There was never a moment outside of messing up that Sonic comes to a dead stop, not even for a second. Maintaining fast movement is the whole point of what makes Sonic games fun. This game is the 3d 'Mania' refresh that this series has needed for such a long time.
So obviously the gameplay looks pretty tight. My question is how did they get the vibes so fucking tight? How did we not know that Sonic and citypop are a match made in heaven.
While I do like some ideas and its originality, every sonic fan game that I see just shows me there's a clear line between "fans" implementing random things in the game of sonic running on pointless and random paths (like the video above) and "real developers" from SEGA creating an actual game. For me the video above is just... whatever(?).
These fangames are so good that they should just change the characters to something original and sell it. I would so buy it in a heartbeat and to see people put so much effort in, they deserve to make money for this level of art
I had the same thought as well, but then not as many people would be talking about it and sharing it around. Better off making a fan-game first to get your name out there, accumulate fans, and then make your own IP.
A rather unfortunate circumstance. fan games, even good ones are already not getting the attention they need and deserve. So trying to make something that doesn't even have the Sonic name attached is gonna be a very hard uphill battle on gaining any attention. With indie devs not having the budget for proper marketing, if at all. It's unfortunately an objectively better option to stay a fangame.
The monthly Debug magazine is a good monthly magazine that covers indie games, some of which you'd never even have known about if not for that magazine, it seems to be one of the few that covers them as indepth as magazines like Edge (and Gamesmaster once did which had a TV show hosted by the legendary Dominik Diamond) and Famitsu etc do for official published AAA big budget games. The makers of the Debug Magazine started it as a side project to their re-launch of Sega Powered magazine, but it seems to have taken top priority over Sega Powered at the moment.
YEAH I saw a few other Adventure-style fangames lately and they all copied the boost game style camera and it feels awful but this one is actually perfect
Yes. Certainly looks way better than the atrocious, out of proportions limbs 3D model they've been using for the past 20 years. The last official 3D model for Sonic that I liked, was the one they used for Sonic Adventure.
@@rollingstart_90s this comment reminded me to add "3d" because there are some really good 2d designs. although, i feel as if this is designed more after 2d sonic box art than 3d sonic models? that would explain the familiarity and nostalgic style...

This demo captures the fluidity of the “Sonic Boom” intro we all fell in love with so long ago. The momentum, the charming 90s SFX, the vaporwave aesthetic… The start screen and menu select! So many tiny elements and details were made with love that made this not just visually appealing, but also enrapturing for its character. This game deserves funding and an A+ for its ability to grasp Sonic and his world so effortlessly
It looks good. Though, the ghosting sonics when running is odd. I noticed at times the trail ghosting sonic frames. Looked like sonic was looking/ facing backwards at times. I can see how the slow motion while text prompts come up could be good. Tho it could also be bad for multiple reasons. For a demo this has very good potential. I think the area sonic runs on could use a base texture and the buildings could use a base texture of it's own for demo reasons. Otherwise, the static white areas gives the game a kind of dead look. Otherwise keep on improving and getting better with this project :3
I've been a sonic fan ever since I was little with a Genesis and Sonic 1. Seen a lot of games since then, and one thing I see in this that I haven't in a LONG time is that Sonic himself displays how much fun he is having! The body movements, the running styles, and the sound effects, just a masterclass in bringing vibrancy to a character that SEGA themselves have so much trouble doing. He seems so loose and free, thinking of Sonic CD intro here, compared to modern renditions where he seems stiff, moody, and bored. Awesome Job man, honestly had a blast watching this and hope this goes further!
Here's a super artistic and personality-filled work about Sonic that we haven't seen in a while! What incredible work with the effects, color palette and design (and city pop)! That move where "jump/bounce" on the floor to increase the height is very interesting and creates a new "flow" to the Sonic Gameplay! Thanks for this, is gourgeous!

This looks incredible!! I am so excited for the future of this game:] Also it was very refreshing to see the boost mechanic from modern Sonic games reimagined as such a fun power-up, and giving Sonic much more creative ways to utilize his own momentum for speed! This game is a gold mine of creativity, not to mention the seamless meshing of Classic Sonic with 80s J-pop music, aesthetic, and visual effects. It feels so natural! Safe and comfy, yet exciting and high-speed... could not imagine a better way to implement what you've done. This format feels like Classic Sonic fully realized
Glad to see this is a sonic fan game. It's great on the concepts, but it's a lil unpolished. Would have been nice to see that it was a fan game added to the description
The art design deserves its own award here! And of course, huge props to the game designers and programmers who managed to make it SOOO smooth on Dreams!
This is IMPRESSIVE!! And the music is worth listening to on repeat!!! I know this took a long time to do this much!! I can imagine how long it would take to make ut a FULL GAME!
It pisses me off to no end that a fan can singlehandedly and for free make an excellent Sonic game with perfect aesthetics and gameplay whereas Sega fumbles every single time. Every single decision I saw in this video - from having an afterimage effect, wall run, dust effects, camera position, to the art style and choice of music, everything is fucking perfect here. And you've done it with a box of scraps. If only they hired you, gave you a cool mil, and let you cook.
Videos like this make me only love Sonic more and more. Even with some of the less than great games they’ve given us over the years, projects like this show that the fans are still here and still hold their more successful games in high regard. Thanks for this video. It’s beautiful and nice to watch. Fingers crossed they’ll stop playing and give us a Sonic Heroes remaster, remake or sequel but hey who knows. 😭🤟🏾
Movement and level design look so good. The levels are obviously not 2D sidescrolling style but the design of the level reminds me of 2D sonic levels yet they flow so well.
This looks like so much fun and the animations and controls look so good! Awesome to still see things being made in Dreams, makes me feel like returning.

@@ozzypuff8957what horrible games have sonic team released in the last 10 years? Heck in the last 10 years they've only released 2 games lmao, forces isnt good but it isn't bad either, it was just disappointing, and frontiers was generally received well, so wtf are you even talking about? On a side note this tired old talking point is dumb, it is only recently that fans have made any 3D fan games that are even slightly impressive, prior to a couple years ago 3D sonic fan games were either mildly neat tech demos or janky slop that barely played any better than sonic 06
@@Supersonicspyrodude, stop, Sonic Mania has been the only good Sonic game since the Sega Genesis days, and it’s not even close. Your cope on Sonic Frontiers is showing, an empty shell of a game with no charm and discordant repetitive boss battles. Even the Sonic Adventure series, despite all its charm, was a buggy development borked mess. Sonic STILL hasn’t had a successful transition to 3D, and the fans deserve better than what they’ve had for the dedication they’ve show the IP for decades. It’s a shame that Shadow’s games were more enjoyable than Sonic’s. Too many of the 3D games have been bogged down by shoddy gimmickry, from werewolves, to swordplay, empty open worlds, convoluted and bad mo-capped cutscenes. How is it that BOTH sonic racing games put the Blue Blur on a vehicle? Don’t get me wrong, love hoverboards, but a freaking go-kart racing game? How, in the actual decades of development, has there not been just a straight up foot-race game? All the characters can clear Mach-3 and we’re putting them in a go-kart? Sonic Boom only got positive reception because the Game Grumps made watching the mess enjoyable. Look, I get it, I like Sonic, too. I’ve loved the character since playing in my grandparents basement with my cousins back in the 90s of the Sega Genesis. Then having my uncle show us how to go Super Sonic. But you don’t have to defend the slop you’ve been given since then. And you wont get anything better if you keep defending it.
I think we all know what we want from 3D sonic and I’m looking at it right now! That being said its great that we live in a time where we can all see everyone’s different perspectives of what makes this franchise amazing, As someone who hopes to be able to be able to find time to study and learn game development, I’m excited to one day be able to throw my hat in the ring when it comes to what would be my dream Sonic game. Just an incredible effort this. Love the art style.
This looks incredible!! I am so excited for the future of this game:]
Also it was very refreshing to see the boost mechanic from modern Sonic games reimagined as such a fun power-up, and giving Sonic much more creative ways to utilize his own momentum for speed!
Can’t wait to see enemies in the levels. The aesthetic and controls certainly look solid, but those levels could certainly use work. Keep it up
This is IMPRESSIVE!! And the music is worth listening to on repeat!!! I know this took a long time to do this much!! I can imagine how long it would take to make ut a FULL GAME!
super gameplay, want to try when be finished :) but as i see in demo it has nice potential.keep it up man :) sonic encore, sonic GT, Omens were nice
came for sonic fan game, left with a bunch of citypop. godspeed my friend.
This is amazingly well done. Brought back some nostalgia feelings
This is the most comfy game ever
Not going to lie, I really enjoy the aesthetic of this
This looks incredible! Amazing work!
It's amazing how two such different musical genres fit perfectly with Sonic, they are, Power Metal and City Pop.
It is crazy how cool and well made this is. Awesome progress and work on the game.
Golden era of sonic fan games 🎉
Movement and level design look so good. The levels are obviously not 2D sidescrolling style but the design of the level reminds me of 2D sonic levels yet they flow so well.
Sonic + Midnight Pretenders is fire, city pop in sonic games is an incredible vibe.
Didnt know I needed a city pop inspired sonic game
Every aspect is bursting with style & unique asthetics, i love it
This looks like so much fun and the animations and controls look so good!
Awesome to still see things being made in Dreams, makes me feel like returning.
Amazing project!!!!
Just continue this,man.
This is a very potencial.
This is so crazy for a game made in dreams. I mean, even if it wasn’t a game made in dreams it’d be impressive as hell, honestly
This man's taste in music is phenomenal.... PHENOMENAL I TELL YOU!!! also the Japanese text that appears when you destroy an enemy gives me heavy jojo vibes. This game is straight fire man!!! Keep up the great work! 😆
I never knew sonic and city pop was something I needed, but WOW is it something I was a whole lot more of! Immaculate vibes fr 👌🏽
I love that he strikes poses while doing stuff, that's so good
Atmospheric af! Hope it gets a full release and isn't discontinued like so other many promising projects.
this is overall the absolute BEST 3d sonic has ever been, only thing left is dont abandon this project and to port it to as many devices as u can (ik its hard as hell tho)
The longer i watched the greater it got, love the music and the art style. really cant wait to play this!
Now this is happening 😎! Sonic and friends chilling and adventuring to City Pop and other 80s-90s J-Pop bangers has always been a cherished head canon of mine. I’m so happy to see that realized here!!! Thank you all for working on this project! This is definitely a Sonic fan’s dream come true; hopefully Sega takes some notes 😉. Keep up the awesome work!
this looks so gorgeous and omg the citypop
That intro hub and graphic design are top notch.
The games vibe is a whole W. Love the way it makes me feel. The Base is also cool. Reminds me of TMNT’s Lair.
Man, why are we in a timeline where FANS have to do things RIGHT.
This is PRECIOUS. current Sonic Team could never
Which shows how little you actually know about making games.
@@Sherlock277 its like you don't see the horrible works sonic team has done last 10 years
@@ozzypuff8957what horrible games have sonic team released in the last 10 years?
@@Mcaark nice bait m8, I r8 8 out of 8
who ever voiced sonic actually did a great job
This is just oozing with style. Im in love
had a smile on my face the whole time :) awesome work guys!
This is gorgeous. The full game is going to be amazing
it's so crazy !!! This is impressive! Bravo!
To the uploader and everyone, Here’s to dreaming and thanks for doing.
This is… beautiful. The graphics are on par with the what sega puts out. That “green hill” stage, OMG!!!
