I wasn’t sure if I wanted to become a software engineer but that was before he mentioned free coffee
After I got a degree in chemical engineering, I saw how much software engineers make, taught myself for a few months, and got a 120k job working remotely. This is the industry. All others can't even come close to comparing.

@@branlynmorales8951 I mean, I’m a full stack dev and now I’m transitioning to a more dev ops role in my company working with gcp. I learn quicker than most people, and my employer kind of took a gamble on me based off how much I was able to teach myself in a few months. From the beginning though, the stuff they were having me do was pretty senior.
What he doesn't mention is that getting a job as a software engineer at Google is kind of like getting into Harvard or Stanford.

Exactly!! My friends who did their internship at Google didnt manage to get a full time position afterwards, and they were some of the top students in our year at university!

Yes my friends were very lucky! That’s a really good thing to have on their CVs. They both got full time positions with Microsoft later! They were practicing interview questions for 6 months!

Granted it takes alot just to get recognized as a software engineer in the first place at 100k.
At least in germany, before you start as a Software Engineer, you usually do get your Master degree in computer science.. so we are going to the 10 years mark, if you include those years.
@@elvitos Depends which uni. All the professors at mine are people who have either done a crazy amount of research or worked in tech. It is certainly not time wasted, you can see all those "self-taught programmers" do front-end or some other kind of bs web dev. For people who want to work on actual tech, like Data Science, Digital Forensics, Fault-tolerant systems, Cyber Security... you must have at least a bachelors. Also people should stop thinking that the university or even school for that matter is intended to teach you how to live your life or how to work properly. University is for academia and research, if you want to learn how to work on a very specific task with a specific technical stack you go on and work.
I am not trying to change your mind, I am just giving another perspective.
@@elvitos In Romania it is much better. All my computer science profs were also employed at IT companies or owning some companies. So 80% of what we learned was easy to apply during work. Also, they understood that students want to work so around 90% of the students were also working (usually 6h / day). So when I finished my masters degree at 23 years old in Software Engineering I was already having almost 4 years of experience in my field. Also, you can learn programming during high school, usually we learn different algorithms and problems that appear in interviews at Google, Facebook, etc. and university is more oriented at learning how to program in an IT company. Almost nobody will be a researcher, which is a bit of a pity, but for work it is optimal. Happy I studied in Romania, now I work in Germany. :)

I own 8 tiny little properties all around the world, and live in the best landscape you can imagine walking with a back pack meeting the greatest people on earth. Before I was prisoner of a house, a wife, a kid. No way in hell I will get back to that. CHOOSE A LIFESTYLE THAT SUITS YOU, and stick with it. I had tons of regrets in the past with my wife, 5 years later, all the things I regretted I have done now. Free of regret..... I would not exchange that for anything.

true in germany senior google devs make about 165k yearly. in the states that would be about 400k yearly. but still costs of living matters too
And dont forget that you can subtract about 45% income taxes + extra social security contributions. And if you want to spend your money, then 19% sales tax.
@@mob1235 Those 45% income taxe + social security.. do you mean in the US or in Europe you pay that much? I know income taxes are high in Europe but thought they were lower in the US or not? How much are taxes in the US?

For example a software engineer earns 80k. That means 40k net. A new house costs about 600k Euros. A medium class car 40k Euros. There is such a big gap in wealth, nobody talks about in media. But the Germans are used to this communism.
@@mikev324 taxes are pretty high in California as well, and you get much less bang for your buck. Saying that, I'd take 400k in SF instead of 165k in Germany any day. In Germany it's much easier to reach the top tax bracket. Effective tax rate ends up being smaller in places like California or Australia.

Sunamer Z median household income San Fran is still 100k a year. People who say you “can’t survive” there on 150k are drama queens or full of BS. What you really mean is “try living a comfortable upper middle class life on 150k like you can literally anywhere else in the world.” “Try surviving on 150k” give me a break dude
This guy speaks wisdom waaaay beyond his years. After about 300-350k/year in the US, you have diminishing returns relative to input effort and lifestyle sacrifice. This is mainly due to taxes as he said of ~50%. Then you buy a 1965-ish house in Si Valley or the Peninsula where your annual property tax is at least $25-30k a year or more (basically paying for a new Honda annually). In the end your lifestyle affordability is the same as someone who makes 250-300k/y. Not worth squandering your life so your grandkids can marry some stranger you don't like who will inherit your house. Sad but true.
most millionaires have more than one stream of income. Coders don't have to only do coding.
@@MigzXP Diversifying your income stream is very important, but for developers the time consumption makes it hard, not saying I havent seen people do so.

This is the fatherly advice I needed. I’m only 17 but I’m so conscious of my future. I don’t have a dad and my mum is abusive, an alcoholic and manipulative. I pretty much look after my 3 younger siblings by myself and although I love my siblings I really hope one day I will be able to have a good job and be financially able to help my siblings out. I’m working 2 jobs at the moment so I can try and save up the money to better my education and start a good career as a software engineer.
Really inspiring to hear. Keep fighting the fight.

It’s all about lifestyle choices. I live in the Midwest. Here, I can make a gigantic impact on the local businesses through quality software consulting. My dad probably made $60k at his peak (definitely averaged closer to $40k) and we lived on 160 acres. Decently close to a world-class university and a nice city, a round trip day drive to 3 different metropolitan areas, etc.

8:42 hearing that warms my heart, especially after I couldn't get O-1, EB-1 and H1-B visas to move to Silicon Valley to work on FAANG companies... Instead, I'm still working remotely in a small cool startups, paying low taxes (6%) and traveling the world 🌏

100k is the national average for software engineers in the industry for a few years. Don't confuse people, and also areas like silicon valley or new york will have higher cost of living even though they pay a lot more.

Very inspiring! Thanks! I've come to similar idea. When you cross a boundary of income and you can afford cars, vacation, entertainment, then "time" becomes most valuable thing. You don't have time to spend that money to get satisfaction and joy from it.

I'm a senior software engineer at a mid sized company making about 150k. Its low pay compared to top tier tech companies but the company offers unlimited paid time off, 100% work remote and only spend couple of hours a day working on average. I own a single fam house in nice part of san francisco outright. I also flip my primary home every 2 years or so. Last 4 years I made about 1m tax free.

@@Hardeneer getting to where I am takes a lot of work. You'll need to be able to code hours and hours straight. If you can't do that, then find another career. But if you are able to and get good at it, then you don't need to find work. Work will find you. Fyi, this only applies to jobs in the US.

Almost no one stays in those companies until they are 50 or 60, let alone retirement. Start your own business, your own niche Saas company is a great lifestyle option as well, besides you are not capped by the salary market and can work from anywhere.

I am a PhD mathematician with over 20 years teaching experience, including a short stint as a Dept Chair, and have never made above $65K. It is startling to me that an intern can make more than I have ever seen in my life.

By "intern", he is talking about someone who most likely graduated from T10, worked multiple startups, and finished marathoning the interview gauntlet to finally find a starting point in Silicon valley's Tech giants.

The trade-off is that you have high pressure to perform, and have to work 80h/week, like in investment banking. They are not going to pay you $300k to chill, sip coffee all day sitting on a bean bag and playing table tennis.
Highly dependent on org. I know a guy at FB resting and vesting. Works like 30 hour weeks for >$300k.

I think you are talking about Startups where programmers have to prove they worths their salary. Big companies generated billions of profit every year. Your salary is just a drop in the pond.

You touched on this, but I wanted to comment on how important the "lifestyle" aspect is. as a dev consultant, I'm really jealous of these big numbers that I hear FTEs at FANG companies make, but I also hear (and see) 50-60 hour work weeks being a norm. My experience is that they really don't pay you more for nothing. I'm always pressured to pursue these huge opportunities from my family, but shy away due to potential work/life balance sacrifices because I really enjoy a 9-5, solid 40 hour work week. or maybe i'm just making excuses :P

It’s not an excuse... knowing what you like is important. Some people can pull off these crazy hours, but most can’t do it for more than a few years. Maybe that’s why people leave jobs so much? I had a friend who did the google thing, loved it, got paid well than burnt out after family suffered. Never went back into tech really after this. Not saying that’s the norm but there are likely tons of stories of burn out and depression that go unheard in big tech. Take care of your mental health! The real gold mine is running your own company that runs itself, or having an app that generates good monthly income. That’s where I would focus long hours if I had to pick. But definitely think the challenge and type of work at the big tech companies is what should drive someone to pursue it, not just the big $$
Mmm there are smaller companies that pay a lot less but expect you to work 50-60 hours per week! And of course the over time work is not paid! I was with a company like that before. At least in those big companies you actually get paid more and get some perks!

@@tylert2413 Oh yes I was also with another company, they were paying low but then it wasn't expected to work over time and we had the flexibility of working from home few hours a day or even few days if they were happy with you hehe It was nice in that way

That’s so true! Geography and the company matters so much. Here in Australia there are companies that pay $50K AUD for junior software engineers! But better companies pay more, like Atlassian pays about $85K AUD to grad software engineers!
The higher paying ones have many more interview sessions of course and are a lot harder to get into.
Also loved the last part about how most people at these companies live almost the same lifestyle.
They don’t though. That’s just what people see. The top paid developers bang supermodel looking high end escorts a few nights a week in their penthouse apartments.

He's clearly mentioning top tier of SE, that's maybe 5% of the total work force. Average SE salary in the US is somewhere close to 100k. Most conversations on SE salaries end up using these inflated numbers. When in fact the median SE salaries are closer to what you'd expect for any engineering/business related job. The fact is that very few people have the energy / opportunities to get these roles.

Most of my SWE friends here in Seattle don’t usually stay their entire vesting period. Amazon specifically has a backloaded vesting schedule which screws you if you leave before the 4th year. Probably worth talking about.
Also Seattle (WA State) has no state income tax, something worth thinking about.
I'm also in Seattle. I'd never consider going to Silicon Valley.
Pay here is comparable but you save yourself the pain of California income tax.
I think they left because of all the rain and it depresses them so much. Always gray sky. Also nothing over there in Seattle. But thank you for jacking up the real estate prices. Now normal non-tech people can’t afford to live there.
Seattle is now an extension of the Bay Area, except with cloudy weather.
I wish people actually understood how vesting works and that most of the inflated salary is stock compensation not actually salary. In reality most of these pay near 100-150k with like 100-200k stocks.
PandemicGameplay Can you elaborate? He did say it's equity. What's wrong with equity once fully vested? Can't you sell it for roughly the advertised amount most of the time?

dmitry123456789012 Amazon is definitely top tier for Software Engineers and the pay is comparable to Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and the other big tech companies. Its headquarters is in Seattle, so you don’t hear as much about it in California press.
@@NotThatKraken In general you're right. Though, Microsoft and Amazon are lagging behind in terms of compensation based on what I've seen (at least it was the case in 2018, maybe situation changed)
@@dmitry123456789012 In 2020 Amazon generally offer larger initial package to the same candidate than either google or facebook. The downside is Amazon has no bonus nor stock refresh program, so the compensation lags behind other tier1 companies after a couple of years.

Cost of living in Poland is about 20-30% of cost of living in Bay Area.
Also keep in mind its fairly easy to get a promotion to level 4, and 5 to some extent. Definitely easier than in UK for example.
Also if you can be self-employed, which is fairly easy and you don't even loose benefits you can get taxation down to about 20%. With this years additional tax benefits maybe even below 10%, will see on my next tax year calculation.
Also free healthcare of different quality, but private healthcare on most normal stuff is affordable.
I would imagine that the pay for the same level jobs in India would be considerably less in India, Lukasz Rozmej.

Specially in the US in Silicon Valley, the cost of living is way too high. These salaries are required in order to live decently. In other countries with a 180K - 200K you can live comfortably even after taxes.
Plus quality of life in Silicon valley is crap.
All jokes aside, this is actually great advice. I’m going through a career pivot atm and this is stuff I need to hear.
Seriously reevaluating my life choices. I live in the Bay Area and knew software engineers made more than 100k, but actually hearing those numbers hits hard

Hmm. 2 years experience as a developer in a small town, and I only make 65k. I might consider trying out a FANG. I used to think 100k is not that different from 65k if you consider the high living expenses in the big cities. But 200k+ is huge.

Not in Nashville Tennessee. Only in Silicon Valley, but these companies hire people From Stanford university, MIT and University of California Berkeley before they hire Engineers from other Universities.
A key temptation to make serious money would be to just work for yourself, but if you come up with some killer app and you're a former employee of a major company watch out. These major tech companies just love suing former employees for Copywrite infringement even if it's just partial, because they can always claim you got the idea or saw/developed the code whilst you were working for them. In which case they own the IP. They have an army of lawyers who just look for this kind of thing.

Yuppppppppppp I got offered 115k out of school recently in the bay area and realized that it made more financial sense to go to Austin tx and make 75k because the cost of living is sooo fucking high.
In Silicon Valley you have more chances to join a Start-up as a co founder and get a percentage and become Millionaire

It’s definitely important to emphasize that the actual salary is almost always less than 200k, but it’s stock that increases that. This isn’t really “income” they’re unrealized gains so that income is very variable, especially if the market isn’t doing so well.
My health deteriorated at Microsoft under constant pressure 24/7, am enjoying my time in a startup now will think 5 times before taking on a high pressure job again
Startups will drain you out too. Have been in a lot of startups and now am burnt out with a back pain and retinal detachment due to excess use of laptop for work purpose . Now I don’t work and looking to switch over to professor job 🙂 way better lifestyle
Working in Germany and hearing those salaries is crazy. Not all seniors here get even 85k eur... And deduct 38%-45% as taxes, that doesn't leave much at the end...
