Yes. The self defense industry is a definite scam. I have changed the way I explain my Kickboxing/MMA club as a direct result of listening to you. I once thought i taught self defense especially, when I was a Hapkido instructor, but I really didn’t even then. So nowadays when asked,“ I heard that training at your club is very good for self defense. Can I come and train with you all?” I respond by saying, “We don’t teach self defense. We move toward our opponent, not away. We train to engage. We teach fighting skills, we lift weights, stretch, and work on endurance, to make you a better fighter. These skill sets may have some self defense applications, but they are not self defense. It is offense. It is training to fight. Is that what you want? Answers vary. Thanks for the video.

"he claimed self-defense in the attempted murder charge" "Self-defense is a countermeasure that involves defending the health and well-being of oneself from harm. The use of the right of self-defense as a legal justification for the use of force in times of danger is available in many jurisdictions." While self-defense is a legal term, and people who know a lot about it and/or fighting understand why the term is being misused. Languages that are living have words that change meaning or gain new meanings all the time. The way the word "self defense" is used by either layman or experts, people all know what is being talked about. What needs to change is that people must learn that it involves: soft skills, getting fit and athletic, training to sprint/Parkour, training to *really* be able to fight and not just learning bullshido or "cheap" shots. Learning that all that is going to take a lot of money, time, work, hard work, sweat and pain. Most don't really want to do all that however, they like the easy, convenient, pretty lie.
@@HeartlessKnave I agree with what I perceive to be the thrust of your post, it really isn't rocket science, everyone knows what "self defense" means, it means being able to survive a random physical altercation, and while it may involve a lot of things like you suggest, I think we shouldn't get too carried away and pretend it's either 100% training to be a professional combat athlete or 0% and don't bother
Most self defense entrepreneurs seem to be scams or con-artists bc people are using what theyre taught on the wrong people, unless theyve been lied to. Engageing is a response to a threat or offense, with an offense, but is defensive to your safety/well-being.

The Bruce Banner/Hulk question is actually a very interesting one, if people figure out a legal way to quickly gain lots of muscle mass after the weigh-ins I bet everybody would use it.
They sort of already game this as much as they can naturally. UFC fighters are often clearly 5-10lbs heavier than at weigh in. It’s basic practice for fighters to try to put back on as much weight after they pass the weigh in.

However, getting someone to that relatively low barrier to entry doesn't actually take that long with good instruction, provided that they're first introduced to light contact sparring.

When someone conditions their leg to the point that being leg kicked isn't as debilitating, is any unseen damage being done to nerves or muscles that might show up a couple decades later?

One stupid question coming right up for you Ransey:) In the Star Trek Deep Space 9 episode "Take me Out to the Holosuite", Captain Sisko has the following conversation with his girlfriend Kasidy: Captain Sisko: [telling the story of him and Solok to Kasidy] We were in the same class at the academy. One weekend, I was with some friends in a bar off campus, The Launching Pad, when Solok came in with a group of Vulcan cadets. Said they were doing research on 'illogical human bonding rituals'. We didn't take too kindly to that. Kasidy Yates:And you'd had a few drinks. Captain Sisko: One or two. Well, we got into a debate and Solok said that Vulcans were naturally superior to Humans and other 'emotionally handicapped species'. Of course, I took the opposite position. So there I am, drunk and debating logic versus emotion with a smug and very sober Vulcan. Well, to make a long story short, I decided that the best way to prove that Humans were every bit the equal of Vulcans was to challenge him to a wrestling match. Kasidy Yates: Wrestling? Captain Sisko: All I wanted to do was wipe that arrogant look off his face so with everyone watching, in the heat of the moment, I challenged him. Kasidy Yates:And? Captain Sisko:I ended up in the infirmary with a separated shoulder, two cracked ribs and a very bruised ego. Kasidy Yates:[laughing] Oh Ben! I don't mean to laugh but what did you expect? A Vulcan has three times the strength of a human. Captain Sisko:[whistles] And they're faster too. But you're right - I got what I deserved. And if it had ended right there it would've been fine. But it didn't. Solok took every opportunity to remind me about our match. He used to point me out whenever I walked across the campus. In fact, he wrote 5 psychology papers about our match. I became the living embodiment of why Vulcans were inherently superior to Humans. Kasidy Yates:You don't mean he was gloating? A Vulcan? Captain Sisko:That's exactly what I mean. He may have hidden it beneath that Vulcan calm of his, but he loved every minute of it. And you'd think that once we graduated it would have stopped. But it didn't. Over the years, Solok wrote over a dozen papers on Vulcan/Human comparative profiles, and at the beginning of every paper is an analysis of that damn wrestling match. Kasidy Yates:And now he comes to your station and announces that he's put together a baseball team. Captain Sisko:Solok doesn't care about baseball. All he wants to do is rub it in my nose on more time but this time he's using my game. My game! My qustion is, if Captain Sisko came to you, stating that there was going to be a rematch between him and Solok and he needed to win it to prove Solok wrong about humans being inferior to Vulcans, and asked you to train him for that match. What training would you give Sisko so that he could defeat his Vulcan nemesis and what techniques would you teach him specifically for that match and what other advice would you give to him about winning this fight? Starfleet would give you unlimited resources to make sure that Sisko wins this fight, and you have full control over his training. Sisko is already shown to be a tough fighter in the series, shown on screen to be capable of defeating even Klingons in hand-to-hand combat. The honour of the human race would rest in your hands and training methods.
I know you're not asking me, but let me provide you with in answer just in case the coach is busy: We need to examine the premise. DS9 is the most boring thing ever invented by mankind and truly trashy. So I think the answer should be: Teach him to fly through the room stiff as a board with his fist infront of his head to punch his opponent (I think that literally happens in the series) and with the power of low budget special effects and crappy writing, he will win the fight. Any sort of clever, intelligent, realistic, exciting or non-crappy way would just not work in that "universe"

Hey Coach, just thought of a dumb question that is of (at least arguably) some use: what martial art would you suggest for defending oneself from dogs - say 30-60 kg - while causing the least possible harm? Wrestling and BJJ is handy but Boxing (also Handfighting) does help with the “not getting bitten”… granted, I’ve learned that you can bloodchoke with one hand pretty easily… the question would stand for predator evasion or defense tho. Kinda rambling, so - have a good one, bro. E: you grab the collar (or the skin at the base of the neck, if absolutely necessary) with a deathgrip and twist until you’re not getting mauled anymore. Then you let go, unless you’re a monster.
Deeply misinformed answer on the question at 17:50. Woody is not made of wood; he's made of stuffed cloth, with a plastic head and extremities, with a pullstring speaking mechanism inside. Buzz Lightyear, being made of solid plastic, outweighs him several times over. But despite his weight advantage, Buzz would be unable to smash Woody's soft fabric body, while Woody would be unable to apply strangulation techniques, his best weapon with his flexible jointless limbs, due to Buzz's space helmet and lack of a neck. The fight would ultimately come down to points, and it's a contest between Woody's reach advantage in standup striking, versus Buzz's weight advantage in achieving dominant position on the ground. Ultimately, I don't think Woody has much of a chance keeping the fight standing long enough to maintain a lead over Buzz, who would probably win by unanimous decision.
I gotta answer the question "what if fighters had to scream their moves before executing them?" If this were the case, rappers, especially rappers like Busta Rhymes, would be hands down the best fighters on the planet by default lmao!!😂
The pacman backstory was definitely interesting. Does sound like a dark story. Could you imagine if they gave him a real backstory. They could and it'd be part of the smash bros universe. Pacman has only appeared once maybe twice as an actual being/character in movies.
I ask this a lot so apologies if you’ve answered it before, but do you have any advice for preparing for a Kyokushin knockdown tournament? Making openings with body techniques is hard as you can’t jab the head to learn distance and get a feel for it. The first blow or the leading attacks for combinations are always really hard for me as I struggle to find openings when sparring and often rely on counters rather than setting the pace
I got my Nidan blackbelt in Kyokushin. you can jab the body to set up distance or you can jab towards the head without hitting them, most people automatically raise their hands...one of my best combos was a jab> cross> leg kick. but the kick followed half a beat behind the cross. Its hard to explain in text but think about how you draw back the jab then throw the cross, most people draw back the cross then throw the kick, i threw the kick a half beat behind the cross, not giving them any time to defend or block. As a counter fighter I would bait them into kicking me by coming in kicking range and just as they kick move outside then follow the kick back with my attack.
Most fighters study their opponent's tactics before stepping in the ring with him, so, if you're up against a guy without a head, it's on you to adapt your techniques accordingly.
For the declaring your moves question- in Kendo competitions you have to declare your target in order for it to score a point. So something like that should be able to be done lol.

Hey Ramsey, what are your thoughts on sports entertainment fighting, such as WWE? Realizing that all the leagues across the world are an entertainment spectacle and not a legitimate sporting competition, how do you view them as someone in the actual fighting community?
ur pac man relevation is quite something, ur definitely my fav youtuber lmao. i feel we could hangout for hours talking about martial arts and dunb stuff lol
Stupid Question: We've all seen Thai fighters kicking trees for shin conditioning. If instead you repeatedly bashed the face against a tree, gradually increasing in intensity, would this make you better able to take a punch?
Ramsey MIGHT know about these old coin-op video games from the 1980s, with myself started playing them in 1976 with Pong and Space War. I can put in ONE quarter and beat the original Double Dragon AND Double Dragon II The Revenge alone straight to the end. I can play and beat the original Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat 2 alone on ONE quarter. I can play and beat the original Golden Axe alone on ONE quarter. I can play and beat Gladiator (Arcade 1986) alone on ONE quarter. I can play and beat Vendetta Arcade alone on ONE quarter. While I can get pretty far in Final Fight, I could never beat the game alone or with others without pumping in the quarters. My twitch skills, awareness and timing were developed this way and carried over into MA training esp with dirty Boxing which is the the timing and positioning Ramsey talks about in a fight. My friends (back then) got sick and tired sparring with me as I could easily anticipate their next move, side step, duck and find openings to hit much like chess. I was not popular with the coin arcade owners either 🙂
The most implausible thing about this story is that you beat the original arcade Mortal Kombat 2, let alone with one quarter- the original arcade release of that game was rigged to give the player 3 winnable fights to start off with, and then every fight after that, the computer controlled character would react to the button inputs before the character sprites moved. It was such a heavy flaw in the gameplay designed with the intention to eat quarters from eager players. It’s possible to game the system, but most people didn’t figure out how until well after the era of the internet. So, assuming you’re telling the truth, how many attempts did it take before you could beat MK2 with one quarter?
MK2 had patterns with jump kicks beck and forth along with baiting the CPU opponent to do something based on your character’s move. Yeah, it took me maybe 20 to 30x before I figured it out.
Fighters are taught to engage, self defense is teaching how to disengage by creating an ever larger distance. @Ramsey Dewey Will you ever do a video about different styles in boxing? People think boxing is just one style, but every champion has their own. Marciano, Hagler, Hitman Hearns, both Sugar Rays, etc. Also, could you do a video about different types of guards? I'd love to know more about the Philly Shell. :D
11:15 giant slalom, with two separate yet repeatedly intersecting trails, going simultaneously 😂 (I haven’t played Skate or Die, but Ski or Die!)
One stupid question coming right up for you Ransey:)
In the Star Trek Deep Space 9 episode "Take me Out to the Holosuite", Captain Sisko has the following conversation with his girlfriend Kasidy:
Captain Sisko: [telling the story of him and Solok to Kasidy] We were in the same class at the academy.
@@TheKlaun9 I'm assuming that your more of a Star Trek: Voyager fan. You may be taking the whole Deep Space 9 and Voyager rivalry a little bit too seriously.
@@Dale_The_Space_Wizard That sounds like some sort of inside thing I have no idea about. Not really part of that scene, just someone that has watched a normal amount of TV shows
On the hulk question, just wanted to add, a lot of commissions do not want someone to be too much bigger in fight night, I could see a scenario where they actually stop the fight

theres also the fact almost all types of kevlar vests and ceramic body armor plates are only good for 4 or 5 rounds at the most, so itd literally turn into a wild west duel of who can mag dump the other person the fastest
I thought it was more like a paintball match with firearms
@@Gloin79 so then a wild west duel of who draws and hits faster except both people go home afterwards
@@retrowave762 ah yeah in a ring. I thought in like an arena with cover and stuff
Purple is my second favorite color. I didn't think about it being tied to the belt at any point. I just like purple lol
"16 weight classes higher"
🤣🤣🤣
Love this format!
If I face a terrifying opponent I want to be a brown belt so my rash guard will hide how afraid I am.
I gotta answer the question "what if fighters had to scream their moves before executing them?"
If this were the case, rappers, especially rappers like Busta Rhymes, would be hands down the best fighters on the planet by default lmao!!😂
Wow coach. I love background. TES III Morrowind Balmora lived that game.
Most fighters study their opponent's tactics before stepping in the ring with him, so, if you're up against a guy without a head, it's on you to adapt your techniques accordingly.
Nice to see you in Balmora, outlander
For the declaring your moves question- in Kendo competitions you have to declare your target in order for it to score a point. So something like that should be able to be done lol.
Nice background! Good old Balmora
0:13 Huh. I missed that. For some strange reason, I feel like I would have made the greatest contribution to this event. . .

Old martial artist here with bad hips. I still want to train. It's been awhile. What direction do you recommend ? Jujitsu background and some striking
I loled at the suggestion to punch the guy with no head, in the face!!!
Love your new intro grand master o sensei chosen one.
Edit Dalhsim is God tier in SF2X just beneath Claw (Vega/balrog)... I can't tell in SF5 ... He wasn't my main in SF2, SFA, or SF4.
It’s an old intro from a few years ago that I bring back once in a while.
Love the Morrowind background.
Hey Ramsey, what are your thoughts on sports entertainment fighting, such as WWE? Realizing that all the leagues across the world are an entertainment spectacle and not a legitimate sporting competition, how do you view them as someone in the actual fighting community?
Just got my brown belt and was looking at rash guards this morning “you know what is stupid? Brown rash guards” 😒
It’s the most disappointing thing about getting a brown belt!
Congratulations, by the way!

Never would've guessed I would see Ramsey in Balmora.

Stupid Question: We've all seen Thai fighters kicking trees for shin conditioning. If instead you repeatedly bashed the face against a tree, gradually increasing in intensity, would this make you better able to take a punch?
My question to you Ramsey is: have you heard of the high elves?

Dang!! Balmora background too ❤
I see you are also an outlander who has explored Vvardenfell!
Gotta respect the Morrowind background.
If a woman asks me about self defense, she gets a heavy dose of sprint training, and getting the conditioning to sustain a sprint and not breaking form, to escape, since there is no prize to win.
This video would deserve viral status just for the Pac-Man lore!
