Blue whales are on the brink of extinction. Despite being the biggest animals to ever exist on Earth, they remain a mystery. To protect them, we first need to understand them better.
In our 14th Planet Wild mission, we’re using drones to drop camera robots on whales. Our goal is to find out what a day in the life of a blue whale looks like.
Special thanks to Cascadia Research for providing us with additional footage, taken under NOAA permit to John Calambokidis.

What you guys do it absolutely amazing!
THANK YOU 🙏🏻

Yes. Those projects are inportant, but it is also important to mention the first priority for everyone should be climate change, because that is why the food chain is disturbed and may get broken down completely someday. We all have the power to change the environment with our impact :)

Thank you plantet wild team for this great mission.
Indeed you can! 😁 Thanks so much for contributing in our mission and being a part of our community 💙🙏
This is my favorite mission so far. I remember when we heard the whale songs for the first time it was incredible. I really do believe that that recording inspired the Star Trek movie " The Voyage Home" where they go back in time to bring back two Humpback Whales to save Earth from being destroyed by an alien probe. I know different species of whales but the whole point of the movie was that we have to protect all animal life because the loss of one species of animal could bring on the destruction of all life on Earth including mankind. This is one of the reasons I am glad to contribute monthly to our missions. I just wish I had been there from the beginning.
I haven’t seen that Star Trek movie but I hope that supporting Planet Wild will avoid us to have to go back to the past to save the whales
I still think it is such a fun and well made movie to watch.
@dianapulido1807 We truly appreciate the support and being a constant backer on our missions, thank you so much! Your kind words and positive feedbacks motivate us even more. We're proud to have you as a part of our Planet Wild community 💙🙏

It is so inspiring to see people do such wonderful things to help the nuture and our planet!
Really happy to hear you found our mission inspiring, thanks a bunch! 💙🐋
5:12 Love how the wake of the boat looks like a whale tale. I also can’t believe how much whaling took place. It’s shocking to think about. Here’s to a strong and steady recovery for our cetacean, sapient neighbors. Planet Wild, I’ve seen you guys since the mission of the Little Owl. I can’t believe you’ve made it this far! Keep going!! 💪
We truly appreciate all the support and encouragement, thanks so much! We're so glad to have you on board 💙🙏

Question: is there any chance that existing members with annual memberships can also take part in the draw for the whale sound recordings? 😊
Good point, thanks for bringing this up! We'll discuss with the team how we can include existing members. Keep an eye out for updates on our Discord #home channel 💙🙏
so crazy seeing the footage from the drone towards the end. Really put in perspective how huge the blue whale is.
Indeed it is! Imagine a Boeing 737 living underwater 🐋🤯
Thanks🥰
💙🐋
When I was a kid, a record of humpback whale songs was in a box of cereal & I was captivated! I watched every Cousteau episode on TV & daydreamed about a career in marine biology. Unfortunately for a multitude of reasons that never happened, but at the age of 55 I did get to swim with 3 dolphins all by myself for 30 minutes in the Florida Keys & it was worth every single penny. ☺️ I live vicariously through YT videos like this & it brings me joy!
That's absolutely awesome to hear about this experience! Glad to hear you enjoyed our mission. We're happy to have you on our channel 💙
I must say I didn't expect to see joe Hanson here. Very pleasantly suprised. 😊
We had an incredible experience working with Joe. Delighted to hear you liked our mission as well, much appreciated! 💙🐋
Actually insane , can not wait for future videos of whale POVs

Great work!
Thanks for the support! 💙
RIP Roger Payen and thank you so much for your positive legacy ❤😢
Is it really held on with just suction cups?
Yes - and they have a mechanism to auto-release after a pre-defined period of time.
Yes, these tiny tags stick on via suction cups, tracking these majestic creatures (typically for 24 hours) before floating to the surface for collection by researchers! The best part is, the whales don't even notice them💙🐋
Are you able to recover the camera if it gets knocked off? Do you have a live stream video of the feed?
You rock!!
💙🐋
Impressive ❤
Thanks for the support! 💙🐋
This is an amazing initiative, and the open-sourcing is the cherry on top! Great to see Joe here too!
Incidentally, there's a wonderful interview with Roger Payne on the Ben Folds podcast of all places! It's the final episode of his show and ends it on a beautiful note (no pun intended 😅)
Wow! You guys are amazing! Unbelievable! Great job!!!! I love the awesome blue whale! And manta rays too. They’re beautiful and majestic!
Big thanks from us for appreciating our efforts, thank you! 💙🐋

I came here from joe and I instantly fell in love for what you're doing for the world! Unfortunately I can't donate as I am a minor but when I become a fully grown adult I will certainly donate! Love what you're doing! 💙🐳
This mission is great and so important!
I would love to see more of the behind the scenes (videos), how you decide on what projects to support and your research in general. There's so much work and dedication in your projects! ❤
Thanks so much for the support! 💚 We’re more than happy to provide you with more info on the vetting and selection of our missions.
For the selection and vetting of all of our projects, we’re working closely with the sustainability consultancy Amsel & Ara amsel-ara.com/ on a day to day basis. They have a team combining a broad range of scientific sustainability skills, e.g. nature conservationists, biologists and forest experts, to ensure a thorough due-diligence process of all our projects to rule out problems and ensure long-lasting mission success.
Once a new project is identified in a collaboration with Amsel & Ara, it's then vetted in a multi-step process. All of our projects must meet the highest quality standards and must provide full transparency over how they allocate their funding. More on this can be read in our blog article: planetwild.com/blog/heres-how-were-selecting-our-projects
@@planet-wild Thank you so much for your response! I didn't expect such a detailed answer, but I am thankful that you did take your time to describe the process! You really do a great job and I am more than happy to be a member of your community! 🥰❤
We're equally happy to have you as a part of our Planet Wild community! 💚🙏
Do we gone see wale video?
Yes, you can see some early footage from the whale camera at 3:32. We'll make sure to post more footage as soon as it is available 💙🐋
*support*
We truly appreciate the support, thanks! 💙🐋
Our ability to cause damage without any care for the consequences is always so depressing to me. People like y'all help me not completely loose hope. Actually doing real things that make a difference! So inspiring, thank you!
We're so glad to hear you found our mission inspiring! Thanks a bunch for constantly supporting our efforts in our missions 💙🙏
What amazing and niche project ideas Planet Wild finds. Lovely video editing and brilliant work.
It's okay to be a conservationist
😅
I see what you did there 🤓
@PalaeoJoe Couldn't agree more! 😍💙
Awesome project!
Thanks for the support! 💙
Awesome video! Can't wait to see what's next for whale research.
Comments from my 3 year old daughter who watched with fascination:
"i like the whale! It's so big! I also like people who help the whale. Because life can be dangerous for them"
"Yipee! They did it!" (As camera landed)
That's so cute! 😍 We are also looking forward to seeing the results of this work and reporting back to the community in 1 year! 💙🐋
Such a great mission!
Your support is much appreciated, thank you! 💙
Woah!! Didn't expect joe to be here! I love this mission, keep it up :))
We also had an incredible experience working with Joe! Glad to hear our mission connects with you, much appreciated 💙🐋
Keep up the great work!
Thanks for rooting for us! 💙🐋
The video is giving a lot of hope. I would enjoy longer videos as well. It seem that there is a lot of footage, that is not making it into the videos.
Thanks for the feedback! Glad to hear you enjoyed our mission 💙
This is marvellous, I am very pleased it went so well for everyone. Thank you Planet Wild and others for planning and executing this difficult and delicate operation. Also huge thanks to the whale for helping with this research!
Thanks so much Audrey for the support and kind words! It means a lot to us to get such feedbacks. We're so glad to have you on board 💙🐋
I just randomly looked up blue whales on UA-cam cuz I wanted to learn about them but I’m so glad I stumbled upon this, thank you guys for looking out for the whales!💪🏼
Thank you so much for the kind words and support! We're happy you found your way to our channel 💙🐋

We also had an incredible experience working with Joe. We look forward to more amazing future collaborations 💙🐋
Blue whale, a few months later: Hey Jim, hey, can you take a look, is there a louse on my back or something?
😅😅 But these tags have a mechanism to auto-release after a pre-defined period of time. The best part is, the whales don't even notice them. 🐋
Cool.
Thanks! 💙
I remember as a child playing those discs and hearing whales songs for the first time-it was fascinating. Thanks for another exciting episode!
That's incredible! Glad to hear you enjoyed our mission, much appreciated 💙🐋
I really enjoyed the underwater footage
Really happy to hear you liked it, thanks! 🐋💙
Fantastic project
Great video like every time ❤
I love Joe Hason, I've been watching his content for years, can't believe you made a video with him. Absolutely love it!
Yeah, we are huge fans of his work, too. Loved working with him on this mission 🐋
I am sure that we know more about outer space than we do about our oceans. I also wonder why we are seeking intelligent life in space, instead of trying to communicate with the intelligent life already here on earth. I have had the privilege to see blue whales and am so happy to be helping us learn about them and thus help them, even if I am but a tiny part of the whole operation. I too, had tears in my eyes. ❤
Thank you so much for the support and being a part of our mission! We're happy to have you as a part of our Planet Wild community 💙🐋
That was a really beautiful video to watch. Keep it up. Much love.
Glad to hear you enjoyed our mission, thank you! 💙🐋
This is awesome! Keep up the great work
Just found your account, first of all thanks for your work and videoing all of it so we can watch it!
Usually I was often watching Mossy Earth, which is another awesome channel with pretty similar values and ideas. Maybe you guys could think about doing a project together to combine the forces ;)
Happy to have you on our channel 💚 We love Mossy as well and are in contact. Maybe we‘ll make it happen some day.
Great work guys
Thanks for the support! 💙🐋
Wow amazing work much love from UK 🇬🇧 xxxxxxxx
Thanks for the love and support! 💙
You guys need to team up with Mossy Earth. Both are doing very similar project based initiatives
We love Mossy and are in contact. Maybe we‘ll make it happen some day 💙
That’s really cool!
I didn't know they were that big! ❤
💙🐋
Truly incredible, love the work you're doing and I will be watching very closely in the future!

We need more people like you!
Thanks for appreciating our efforts in our mission! 💙
Good job you're doing!
Thanks for the appreciation! 💙
Thanks guys!!!!!
Just thanks ❤
Thanks for the appreciation! 💙🐋
How are those suction cups able to stick from a drop and with the force of the water on them?
The drone operator uses height to make sure the tag to stick. Once the device is in place, the pressure induced by the whale's dive ensures the tag is secured. 🐋
love your video, perhaps one of the few life forms on earth that are not keen to destroy the planet…
We truly appreciate the support, thank you! Glad to hear our mission resonates with you 💙🐋
I think it’s finally time for me to subscribe. I’ve been following for long and I’ve never had the last little push to go to the website and make the support happen
Thank you so much for supporting our efforts! We're glad to see you as a part of our Planet Wild community 💙🙏
How do you recover the device or do you?
I currently can't spend the money on a monthly subscription (I'm a broke college student dual majoring in Marine Biology and Bioinformatics), but I wanted to say thank you for everything you do. I've been watching this channel for a while now and all the projects are amazing and for such an amazing cause. I also wanted to comment to do what I can to help with the algorithm! Also, last thing, if you see this I was curious about how the cameras stay on the whale. It looks like a suction system, but I'm curious how that works as well as it does at the speeds blue whales can travel, as well as being underwater with the resistance that water has on an object?
