One of the most beautiful star ship designs they ever came up with, in either shows or the movies, and by far the loveliest in Voyager (IMO of course)!

Best thing about the ship is the deflector dish. Really like the blue glow and how it reflects off the underside of the hull.
Maybe one day we'll see an official slipstream-prototype Dauntless... designed by B'Elanna Torres.

with the streamlined design of the dauntless there is nothing to say that the weapons and bays are not there is the case. it is possible to have flush doors and coverings to weapon bays and shuttle bays.
Hearing someone say naming a ship Dauntless is weird boggles the mind. There have been at least five different ships of that name in the Royal Navy to date (including one that's currently in service, even), three in the US Navy, probably many more whose names translate to Dauntless in other national fleets and who knows how many in private hands. It's not an unusual name at all, and Trek has always drawn heavily on historical wet navy sources for ship names.Of course, it's also likely that the name was inspired by E.E. "Doc" Smith's Lensman novel series, which is very much the grandfather of all space opera. Kinnison's Hero Ship was pretty much always named Dauntless in those stories as well.

The fact the name Dauntless has you debating with determination on why it's named that means it's job is already done :p
It might not be that odd for Starfleet to re-use a hull number. The USAF has had the F-15 Reporter as well as the much more famous F-15 Eagle.
Also, the Dauntless is one of my favorite Trek designs.
This is one sexy sleek ship. I’ve always loved it. I would love to see an advanced concept with the nacelles removed but integrated into the hull (like the Defiant) where the impulse engines are, making it more streamlined for the evolution of the Federation into the 25th century.
I like the photo of the F-111. That is what I worked on back in the late 80's in the U.S. Air Force.
Nice evolution toward ships without need of nacelles, like the Orion 7 and 8 and the Hydra in the German Raumpatrouille TV miniseries. The 3 sides of the triangle evolving further, into the 8 sides of Orion's 150-meters saucer-only hull with barely visible hatches for Lancets (shuttlecraft) and deflecting at the underside projected in all 8 directions.
I feel like that dude is just gonna scream about what a menace Spider-Man is at any moment.

WARP 9.9 is a limitation of travelling in subspace, in the books and other media later in the future the federation discovered sidespace, and using extra nacelles together with travelling in sidespace enabled ships to break the 9.9 barrier, one book saw the captain asking the helm for warp 23.
I really get the impression Rick likes one shape of ship. If you cross your eyes, most of his designs look like the exact same shape.
I think he's just lazy and that's how he comes across.

Old comment, ik, but: NX was established as the official designation for starflet prototype vessels long before the "NX class" was ever introduced.
When people ask "why doesn't the Dauntless have this feature," I think we're forgetting that the ship was designed as a ruse by an alien trying to make what he thought a federation ship would look like, rather than a paint-by-numbers standard federation vessel.
Always loved this design. A bit disappointed when It first aired that it wasn't a 'true' star fleet vessel- although that episode of Enterprise would seem to contradict that...
I bet that the Dauntless got it's name because all of Voyager's timeline-fuckery temporarily caused Enterprise to be named Dauntless at that point in their current timeline until the 29th century Starfleet cleaned up that whole Braxton incident.
My guess is, that after the Voyager returned to Earth, Starfleet reviewed the logs, and found out that the crew encountered the Dauntless and as a result even made a Slipstream drive for Voyager which they used for a short time. So Starfleet most likely developed the technology and created an actual Starfleet version of the Dauntless and that is why it is seen in the future outside the window of the Enterprise J.

Hearing from the designers from the shows is always great, especially after reading so many quotes from them over the years in various magazines and books.
Looking forward to you chatting to him about the Equinox, one of my favourite non hero ships from all of the series, especially interested to hear what really came first; the Defiant "pathfinder" sketch become the Equinox or did the ship model become the book design for the early Defiant prototype.
The book and the episode were released at about the same the book was published and I have no memory of it ever coming up.
Never mind found my answer on Memory Alpha, he revealed on one of the Voyager DVD's that the ship was based on a real sketch he made while designing the Defiant.

after Enterprise, i jsut wrote off nx-01-A as a recycle of the nx series of experimental ship numbers. the nx series were test prototypes for various warp capable ships. the nx-a series is the same thing starting over but using slip stream. remember this alien tried to sell it to Voyager's crew that it was a new tech to get them home. the prototype slipstream ship likely would be deployed for this task, right after passing testing grounds, and goes into production under the ncc numeration, continuation.

Would be cool if Starfleet did create their own copy of this ship. One aspect for the bridge I think would've been cool would be a holographic free-floating viewscreen.

I could be that NX--01 A because it was the first Slipstream drive., like the first warp 5 vessel was NX-1
The name itself should've clued the Voyager characters in that something was off. The Federation would not name a NEW ship NX-01A.
@@StormsparkPegasus why? NX being new/experimental tech platform (defiant/archer's ENT), I see no problem with it using NX-01-A when it symbolises the next major jump in propulsion tech... yea this is before ST:E but hey... still fits... NX-01A on the MSD and NX-01-A is the bit that bugs me...

..I'm very curious about the Valkyries(and the many variants) from Star Trek Invasion. The Peregrine fighters should have been augmented or replaced by them. It'd be nice to get some official background and see them maybe even become cannon ...

Prodigy brought this ship properly into starfleet.
The ship looks like a squid, I however do not like the narrow nacelles. Those may be placed a little further to the sides, this way it will look a bit better on the rear side and top/bottom views. Also having a shuttlebay would add a lot of good to the ship, even if it would be 1 or 2 shuttles due to it's size.
The NX-01-A part, well that is definitely re-used later on. No doubt in my mind about that.
In Star Trek Online (which starts out ~40 years after Voyager), the Federation goes back to the Delta quadrant and gets data on this ship design, and actually puts it into production as the Dauntless class. Some modifications from the original Species 116 design of course, but externally it looks the same.
I may be getting the Dauntless class in Star Trek Online for my birthday from my wife and kids :/ still debating on which t6 science ship to get. Anyways I love this ship :)

Awesome episode, although I can't say I'm a fan of the ship. It looks maybe a bit too organic. I think it may have been better if the aft section curved up instead of down and the nacelles sat right over the saucer, sorta like the patrol escort refit from ST:O.
I got my ham radio license back a few years ago, and when I got my Extra class, I applied for and got a vanity call.NX0IA. NX0I was already taken. Probably the only two callsigns that are similar to Federation registry. Sorry that the 1 is really an I (letter) but it still looks cool on my license plate.
Always liked the Dauntless, but never noticed this until Cpt. Foley (was it him that said it? I think it was Stuart or it could have been a STO "Let's Play"er Brent Justice, hmm they both said something about the ship that's for sure)
Someone mentioned that the nacelles on the ship are way to close to the secondary hull.
But yeah I like the ship over all, except for the pointy bit at the bottom of the secondary hull, when ever I see the Dauntless's schematic for the ship I always get bugged by that pointy bit, but it's not there when I see it plain (on screen).

I think the NX-01-A was named after the first federation ship, the USS Dauntless NX-01.

I mean AFTER the Federation was founded. Archer's Enterprise was before. So, until we see otherwise, I think the first ship made after the federation was founded was the USS Dauntless

The Dragon class corvette from the video game X3 bears strong likeness to the Dauntless.
I wish someone like Rick worked on the new Star Trek movies. The new designs don't seem to have any real thought behind them.

The NX registry was probably supposed to be a complete new line of ships so the registry was reset. But, it wasn't a federation starship anyway so why did Arturis know to fake the registry to what it ended up being?
I think the way the Dauntless is supposed to be a runner not a fighter. Think Moya from Farscape, the primary defense was Star Burst, which is run for it.
That my theory, Dauntless was Arturis species answer to running from the borg. They only built one because borg crushed them as they were replenishing their ranks after 8472 debacle.
Im surprised that Samuel actualy bought up that fact about this ship being destroyed.
Though from other conflicting sources iirc The pilot after he was assimilated his ship too also ended up being assimilated aswell by the borg.

FLAME4564 Borg design philosophy prevents them from making use of the Quantum Slipstream Drive.
It's always about weapons with you guys lol. Maybe there were no weapons at all being that it was intended to be flown directly into Borg space. The excuse being, it will only take 6 months or however long it was going to take and there would be no need for weapons if they stayed in the slipstream like they were order to do.
I always consider the Dauntless as a prototype vessel for Arturis species, something they working on as a way to permanently move away from Borg space. Which is why they were hoping species 8472 would buy them time to perfect the design. That why there wasn't any shuttlebay or weapon systems. An why it only took one torpedo to disable it shields.
What would have happened if Tuvok had phasered Arcturus? Voyager would have had two ships and the Dauntless would have been taken to Starfleet!
I wonder if the Slipstream drive was taken from Andromeda. which was loosely based on another Roddenberry creation.

Wasn't the "NX-01-A" an alien design of a far more sohpisticated civilasition? Who is to say that this is not there version of the Shuttle, or maybe a corvette. Remember what Arthuris said "... beyond your compahention."

She’d look sexy covered in Voyager-esque ablative armor and armed to the teeth. Keep the sleek streamline appearance by having weapon ports integrated into the hull. Then give her the weapons load out of the Achilles class with pulse phasers and micro-quantum phalanx. She’d be mistaken for a scout just once😉
And I thought the registration on the U.S.S. Franklin was weird lol

So it's experimental not in production but is the A? How is that possible? First it would become the Dauntless class change its registry to NCC- XXXX and then be retired or destroyed and then a new ship names Dauntless and made the A.

seems when these ships loose their necks they loose their balance an elegance, mass seems too centralized, n lumpy, guess its easier on the model buildes when every week yer doing a ship, a neck and long warp nacelles and pylons, n this ship would look cool.. kida looks like a hat made of newspaper or a pelicans beak..even looks too squat to contain a viable warp core (hence the length of the neck), to each his own i guess.. d was pretty, c was pretty, excelsior..yuk,,bad neck.. small saucer, still interesting stuff thnx for posting

The timeline with Equinox didn't quite make sense to me. Since the Equinox was in service before Voyager & got sucked into the Delta Quadrant before them, it should be an older looking design than Voyager & the crew should've had TNG uniforms.

+Marz10 the Equinox was based off a early design of the Defiant, Starfleet streamlined the design and created the Defiant. the Equinox was not created in the TNG era but closer to DS9, as it was designed to fight the borg.
but, the production version of the Equinox was strpped if its heavy weponary and torps, because it was a compact science ship.

only the borg cube , the defiant and the enterpeise were practical models. the akira class, the saber class , and the yeager class were completely computer generated.

I know what those ships were made of in real life, I was just talking about how they were against the Borg Cube, being destroyed left and right.
And yes I've seen all the Star Trek movies a dozen or more times (except for the new movies, I've seen the two about 4-7 times in total).
dauntless was the name of kinnuson's personal battleship in the seminal LENSMAN novels. and you guys call yourselves scifi nerds!

Rick Sternback's designs are honestly BORING!
He brings nothing in term of new ideas or direction. He doesn't think or put things into careful consideration like his predecessors before..
What he does is basically kit bashing! He take elements that he likes from elsewhere and put them in a package that he likes. And since his taste never really evolved, all of his ships come out as the same generic sci-fi ships with whatever was in trend (at the time) flavoring it!
There's nothing bout carrying the identity of federation ships. Nor is there evolution of society & technology.
All of these new ships are just style over substance! Just something to look cool on screen. No new idea. No new solution.
That is why these "newer" materials never caught the attention and imagination of the public today (just diehard fans & money hungry executives that are still interested in Trek). That is why the franchise is a dying failure!
And why all new projects are prequels / reboots. They have nothing new to offer! So all they do is rehashing the same stuff with a new package and hope it makes money!
The production side is rotten and it's killing Star Trek!

Rick comes across as very lazy and irritating to me. I've seen two episodes of his now that I can think of. I don't like him and won't be joining any future episodes that feature him.
