    take the brake drum and turn it so the drum is reversed and bolt it on loose that will allow you to use it like a slide hammer...old school trick

    A trick I learned many years ago. Use two lugs nuts and loop a chain from one lug to an opposite one. Then jack your floor jack up to a height about level with the axle flange, and hook the chain around the jack then roll the jack away quickly, usually the axle will come with it on the first try.

    You might run some tape around the U-joint caps Dave, dropping a cap and losing needles is never any fun. Look forward to seeing the next bit !

    I would not be able to do these videos. When I am under a vehicle, even doing a simple oil change, most of my time is spent vainly searching for the wrench / other tool that I have JUST laid down RIGHT BESIDE me and now cannot find!
    Good work.

      You are not alone. That's why we tend to have 10 complete tool sets. But we still can't find what we need, hahahah.

    In 1970 Army life in Va. my roommate had a 55 Chev. Wagon with a 350/370 and 4.10 gears that he raced all the NASCAR types back there. They could not understand how he was so quick. (gears) But every time he went home to Oregon, the pumpkin came out in the driveway and the 3:08's went in!

    For a first go, I think you are doing fine. The flipped brake drum usually works, but not always. If not then sometimes the way you did it works and sometimes a puller/slide hammer is necessary. That pumpkin is heavy I hope you use your trusty jack.

    Just the tip take-it-or-leave-it use black tape around your U-joints so the cats don't fall off and lose the little bearings

    Another handy trick. I you have a leaky pumpkin to diff housing seal, just loosen all the nuts, pry the pumpkin out a quarter inch or so, take cotton string and wrap it around the outside of the studs four to six times, then tighten the nuts back up. No need to pull axles.

    You're going to be amazed at the difference that 3.08 gear makes. Especially when cruising the big highway. I have the exact same set-up in my '36 Chevy Coupe ( 350ci engine, 350TH Trans, and 1957 Chevy diff w/3.08 gear). However, I plan to upgrade to a 700R4 w/overdrive in the near future.

    • @timatwell3728
      @timatwell3728 3 роки тому +1

      it should you don't have much weight for the motor your running you shouldn't leave the axles in the housing like that will make the seals leak should pull alway out stand up hope it don't leak these can be a bit## getting apart that one looks like been sealed for long time need pickup a bag of oil dry or kitty litter but oil dry is cheaper weight wise for bag size but don't get your head under it still say been better to pulled in driveway stay safe stay healthy stay busy

      @@ScottRods Acceleration is great. Not like that 4.56 gear you have, but the 3.08 in that car isn't a sloth either.
