it only works on new setup phones. you have to get to notifications -> lock screen notifications and then toggle the first option or the second one and decide on the settings icon which apps you want to be hiden. for example you can choose to see all notifications except your banking app and after your face is recognized your notification from banking app will be shown aswell

Go to settings, looking for notifications to show, then you have to select hide content and below it, select show content when unlocked.

At the cost of an ugly notch on the front. 3D facial recognition is not impossible on Android, it's just that most of us would not want an ugly notch when we can use fingerprint sensors in the screen or on power buttons & have more screen screen, which interestingly Apple also uses for the iPad & oh well MacBooks too.
