- I do about 5 different versions of this song ...this is the one in an open G tuning (thats what the guitar happened to be tuned to at the time) ..All the versions are as bad as each other so it didn't matter which one I uploaded really .....Something else that was residing on my old laptop before it had all the files sorted out
@clayhorsemusic Thanks Bruce .... I grew up listening to early country/delta blues my dad was a big leadbelly & blind lemon fan so when I was 6 or 7 years old in the early fifties I had already been exposed to this 1st generation blues and then in the 60,s I moved on to the 2nd generation (muddy, wolf , T bone etc) which my dad disliked he was a bit of a purist ...so I guess thats probably were it all started for me ...and I still love this kind of music and still regularly play it....Kev
@electricragtime You were indeed extremely fortunate to have such an erudite father who could instill the same appreciation in you. If there was ever "the gift that keeps on giving", it would be certainly be along those lines.
Beautiful guitar playing on this... it’s kind of hypnotic with his soothing vocals
Thank you for the input my friend ...the vocals are always a bit dodgy on my video's because basically I can't bloody sing to save my life
electricragtime You’re very welcome... you’ve done a really fine job on this number!
Bloody love this. Never got round to Blind Lemons stuff, but god willin..one day when Im rich n retired, like thee...I will! Brill this, love it.
Outstanding
Thank you ...my aim is to please
I listen to it few times. Melancholy, great blues.
Hauntingly beautiful! Wish you would upload your other versions too!
This is a beautiful recording of a classic. Thank you
Thank you Paul ...that is very generous of you ...all the best ...Kev
A really great version xxxx
This is amazing, beautifully done! I'm adding to my play lists, thx. I've always loved Lou Reed's version, too.
Thank you ...its a song I always liked to play ...generally in my set
@practicing4 Thanks Min....I grew up with this kind of music my dad was listen to leadbelly and blind lemon when I was a kid ...the majority of people at that time were listening to doris day nat king cole and rosemary clooney...... so I guess all the first generation blues singers were instilled into me and of course I subsequently got into the 2nd generation (muddy, howling wolf, buddy guy etc) which my dad said wasn't authentic ....funny old world isn't it???.....Kev
Fabulous
Thank you !!
Incredible!! You sound so at home and natural doing this. Someone else said "blows me away" and I agree completely!! Awesome Kevin!
Very nice Kev....such an enjoyable listen....
Jack
in a word wonderful.
Thanks Irv.... sorry about the delay in replying ... I haven't spent much time on youtube recently so sometimes stuff goes unanswered for a while ....I loved the watchtower vid.....all the best....Kev
I first heard this song in 1968. That would be the Canned Heat version on "Living The Blues." I have given a friend a list of songs to be played at my wake; it's going to happen very soon. One Kind Favour is at the top of that list.
I added it to my playlist " Return to Yesterday" . Thanks for very creative work.
I am partial to the days by gone. Somehow I feel strange attraction and constant desire to explore more the past century and people. Wonderful production. Thanks for visiting.
victor garcia I am very happy that you came. I found this one different. I love old times, music, photos. I got this crazy attraction to the past. What about you. Have a nice day.
Un hermoso video. Saludos desde Argentina.
Music Blues yang indah, mantab ,saya suka.♥️👍
For fifty years I thought this was a PP&M composition. Never too late to learn. Wonderful version you've uploaded. Back to the guitar to give this a run.
Thanks Greg..... PP&M did a great version and like a lot of the old blues tunes hardly ever got credited to their originators ..... Trad Arr --whoever was the usual get out for record label credits .....if you fancy a go at it....it just lends itself to open G tuning.......happy new year ....Kev
This is absolutely my favorite rendition of this song~ Can I buy this somewhere?
Thank you for the kind words ....and no this has never been released but feel free to download it using one of the many youtube downloader apps available
use a youtube to mp3 converter online.
Hi Kev
I just found your channel thanks to your 4+20 cover (and subscribed on the basis of it)
But this very song ... got me blown away !!!
You got the soul and the grace of it ....
Thank you sooo much for posting this
You made my day ;-)
Thank you my friend.....the first time I ever heard this song was the peter paul and mary version ...sometime around 1964 .....I remember telling my dad (who was a big music fan) about it and he promptly played me the original blind lemon version .......there is a version on youtube by a couple of chezch guys bena and ptaszek ? (think thats their name) which blows me away completely.....thanks for listening....Kev
Thanks Chris.... I'm pleased that your not another disappointed viewer ...I thought this version was far enough removed from the original not to cause confusion.....but you know what its like ...there is no pleasing everyone.....Thanks again...Kev
Canned Heat lead me to this ❤️
Canned heat? ....Thats a bloody coincidence ...just before logging into youtube I was sat playing a lapslide version of on the road again ....
@Ottawarocket Thanks Rob ....this is another one of the unfinished songs from the old laptop ....but I love this song...and play a few different versions in a few different tunings when I play it live (a bit like this one really) ....
@1Jisom Ha Ha Ha...thanks for the vote of confidence Jeff.... its very easy to play ...its all in the tuning ..the fretwork is a doddle ....there is no video for it because this is another of the unfinished projects from my old laptop so not captured on camera..... but I will do a tuition vid if you want one? ..but it will be a while cos I don't have a camera at the moment.....maybe santa will bring me one if I write him a letter .
Brilliant! You had me at the first slide. Awesome performance. You rocked it!
cheers,
julie
Nice work Kev! Love the slide and loose bluesy feel and vibe you've got here. Very nice heartfelt cover of an awesome blues classic! Very nice Sir! :)
I gotta tell you Kevin, you are a bit of maestro. Everything that I listen to from you blows me away.
Exceptional guitar and voice
Great stuff. Proud of you. Oh my.
@fngrpkn06 Thanks Randy...this is the music that I love....Kev
Gorgeous, Kev. :)))
Lovely sounds, Kev, and, boy, did it come bouncing through the speakers. Great clarity, playing and singing. Thumbs and regards, Graham.
I love this version !
Excellent rendition! First heard Bob Dylan sing this one :) Thumbs up!!!
Thank you ... I only recently heard dylans version ....my old man had blind lemons version ....and I guess I,ve been playing it in one form or another for 40+ years....all the best Kev
I like your version and Im sure no one would think it was the great Mr Jefferson!
Blown away Kev!! Thanks for recommending this upload in your message to me! ;)'
I see you mentioned John Martyn in a comment above - I'm a big fan of his. - Jacqui
Very funky version of this, Kevin. Really good effect in the open tuning. This is one I need to cover someday. Cheers, my friend. Dave
Great song Kev and I'm loving the guitar work here
Rocket
@Sunambra Cheers Martin ...I love old country blues stuff
Thanks Dave..... I would love to hear you do a version of this.....this was one of about 5 different versions I play.....my normal giggable version is a slide guitar thing
Rich and retired? ,,,Hmmmm ...Poor and tired maybe ....this has been in one or t'other of my live sets ...in various incarnations for bloody years....and I never get tired of playing it .... I should actually start recording some of the shit from my live sets really ....just never get around to it...I spend to much time listen to other folks music on here ha ha ...nice to hear from you auld lad.....Kev
diferent class man wit a souind
@017mls Thanks Mike ....this is another one that was sitting on the old laptop unfinished (and probably never will be) ...but its a great one to do live....kev
@MrsCatification Hi Viveca..... I was very undecided about uploading it really ...its not really good quality.....pretty spontaneous but the recording leaves a lot to be desired ......I might do a full band type cover of it eventually (if I ever get all my jobs sorted out) .....Kev
@raffaport Thanks Graham....I apologise for the deluge of sound.....its down to 1/ mixing on headphones 2/ incompatibility between the two different bits of software 3/ trying to squeeze every last drop out of the D/A converter....and last but by no means least my ham-fisted guitar style .... I just can,t help myself when it comes to hammering the crap out of my poor old instruments .......Kev
You're one of those musicians who've played a lifetime and it shows. Cool BLJ cover. Your music moves me as much as Skip James does. I didn't think that was possible. :) Janet
@scarabee29 Thank you very much for the kind comment.....I love this song...it just seems to lend itself to almost any open tuning.....Kev
@JackGAdams Thanks Jack ...glad you liked it...Kev
@tanglewoodtw400n Thank you kind sir......this sort of stuff is my first love in music
I'm gonna do a follow up post to this, or should I say a video response, It's gonna be titled all of Jeff's guitars smashed on fire... Man Kev, you see why I let you do this one first, to save me the humility... This is the best version of this anywhere.. I showed my Pop over thanksgiving the Check dudes doing this song all blottoed, but well played. Your version is way better, I think you would be just as interesting to watch as well, should give it a try, might be more fun to watch
Hi Jim,...as you say this is definitely not Mr Jefferson....my problem was that youtube only give you a finite number of characters/letters for the description and unfortunately this description was much to long so a lot of what I had written was discarded ...although if you read the description it does explain that it is inn fact me doing one of several versions that I play regularly at the odd gig I do so please accept my sincere apologies ..all the best Kev
@cellarsunmusic Thank you David...This is another one of the files that were sat on my old laptop for over a year unfinished because the new software won't read the files from the old set up....so they are just MP3 versions that were rendered from a single live track ....and I just can,t be bothered to try and do anything else with them....so I just uploaded them as they are and stuck a slide show with them ...but I love this song and often play it differently in other tunings
this is great
Thank you..... I'm glad you liked it.....its a bit rough around the edges (impromtu rendition) but at least I remembered most of the words this time....thanks a lot for watching...all the best Kev
@clayhorsemusic I love the "going to hell anyway" quote..... I always figured I,d be meeting the fellah with the horns eventually....My old man loved the likes of son house, charlie patton, gus cannon .... I think his cut-off point for authentic blues was big bill broonzy ...anything after that was just a new-fangled rehash.... but to be fair in the fifties in the UK people like al martino frankie lane jo stafford etc were the order of the day ..so I was pretty fortunate I think
Great Man!! 👍🏻 ☮️
Thank you kind sir ...my aim is to please haha ...
Well you have! 😊
Sounds great, Kevin! Yorkshire blues! Very nice sound on guitar and vocal! Save it on the PC, many of the great blues singers made several versions of their stuff, and you got five here! Great stuff! Cheers, Kev! -karl
Your voice and playing of all these songs is fucking cool seriously haha i dont know but you just sound so sincere and legit! Great songs and ways to play em. I think a long while ago you asked me if i played guitar when i asked a question and yes i do. I meant to reply earlier but ive been busy with school and who knows maybe you dont remember but i didnt want to leave you hanging after you took the time to reply to me in the first place. Once again great channel haha
cool one ! ;-)
Thank you its a song I like a lot....Kev
Another great oldie Kev ,, i used to play this in open C donkeys yrs ago ,, forgot i ever did it !! must be a bit of dementia creeping up on me !! lol ,, hey ,, i liked the guitar sustain at the end ,, which one , from your vast collection did you use ? ,, cheers ,, dave :)
Thanks Dave....I do a different version of this in open C tuning (it all depends which guitar I happen to pick up and what tuning its in to which version I play)....if my memory serves me well this was played on a 1968 Gibson Everly rothers Guitar (like cat stevens played) just before I sold it about a year ago...anyway get your open C version uploaded I,d love to hear it....Kev
@electricragtime
Of course, it's ubiquitous, but my favorite song of Skip's is Hard Time Killing Floor Blues. I've only been a Skip fan for a while. I got introduced to him when I watched the movie, "O Brother Where Art Thou," and they played a version of his song in the movie. So it set me out to explore who wrote it. And then I found other songs of Skip's. Maybe one day, you can do a cover it. I've seen all different versions of it with different words. :) Janet
Ha ha ha.....cheers Mike... has Ian paid you a visit yet....he told me he was going over to the UK (just as I was going the other way) and was after meeting a few folks from this side of the pond.......I even missed out on the pint he promised to buy me.....I'll just have to drown my sorrows in this cheap wine I guess
@onewomanandsomesongs Hi Janet.I must admit I like killing floor myself.....my favourite version of the song is by kelly joe phelps......but I also like "devil got my woman" .... John Martyn turned that song into "I'd rather be the devil" .there is a fabulous live version of John doing it on youtube..which is possibly one of my all time favourite performances......I do actually play Hard time killing floor and will eventually record and upload it (not exactly like skips version though) ...Kev
@onewomanandsomesongs Janet! ....I'm humbled ......I just enjoy playing .....I'm a big skip james fan myself ...so that comment means a lot......thank you kind lady...........Kev
@eatonjohnrobert Thank you John....I greatly appreciate that........I am going to have to stop uploading these "unfinished" badly recorded badly mixed tunes though ...I think.......as much as I enjoy fiddling with the video/slideshow thing....Kev
Great, great moment ! The best version I know ! Your voice is like a long complaint and your guitar part is simply magnificent. That's how I would like to play it. Do you sell the tablature?
Hi Phil I don't think that I have replied to your comment and for that I apologise profusely .... I dont have any Tab for this ...like all the stuff that I play its mostly straight off the top of my head .....but if you tune your guitar to an Open G tuning it pretty much plays itself ......just wank around on the 5th 4th and 3rd strings at the third fret and you've pretty much cracked it ....the two chords occur as a bar at the 5th and 3rd frets
@@electricragtime Hi electricragtime,
Thank you very much for your answer. That's really nice.
I really liked your version of this piece and by dint of perseverance, I finally managed to "crack the code" ;).
I added some variations to it. It is now a song that I play very regularly.
You are doing a great job and keep it up.
bye.
Nice one Kev, good on ya mate. Was that open G for grave? Good job it wasn't in A, for alive, that would be a premature burial. All joking aside , nice one
@buniluvr Thanks Julie.....another one of my favourite songs....isn't it funny when you pick up a guitar there are always certain songs that your hands automatically start to play.....this is one my fingers always find their way around (no matter what the tuning) ....Kev
respect
Thank you kind sir
luv ya
Thanks amigo
Sounds like music from 'Sons of Anarchy' Good blues!
I do this song in Double Dropped D (capo'd on the 2nd fret)... Learned it from Eleanor Ellis many years ago... The only way to do this song is dark... Heck, Blind Jefferson all but told his life's story in it... "My heart stopped beating and my hands turned cold... Now I beleive what the Bible told"... Blind Lemon froze to death on the streets of Chicago... Well, that's the way I heard it...
hi Bob ...I play several different versions of this song in several different tunings (depends which guitar I pick up and how its tuned .... BLJ,s death certificate says he probably died of "probable acute myocarditis" ... legend has it that he had a massive heart attack after getting lost in a severe snow storm ... I suppose nobody will ever know for sure ... I,ve heard the song played in many styles and in several tunings ... my favourite version at the moment is the one by Bena & Ptaszek here on you tube
P.S ...Bena calls it one kind favour ...well worth a listen
Yeah, I have heard about the heart attack... You must admit that the no matter the cause it's strange that BLJ has that verse in the song which makes it even darker than it is... BTW, I love this version... Thanks for sharing it... I do it up pretty well, too, but it's not a song that fits with my programs so I don't get to perform it often... I did have the pleasure of having Phil Wiggins play harp with me on it one time... He said he really enjoyed it since it wasn't the kind of song that John Cephas would do in a performance... Bob
You loved this guy huh???
Nice job, Kevin. How come some of you Brits have such a good feel for this stuff? Cheers, Bruce (Mississippi Delta born)
@karlake2 Cheers Karl.....Yorkshire blues Eh!! must be because I was born in the delta (the humber delta)... I'm getting a little tired of computer recording now....it just doesn't have the "soul" of analogue (its to clean an clinical)
@Torkgasmicgirl8 Thanks again Jacqui......this is the music I love.... I realise its not true to the original but very little of what I do ever is (mostly because I'm a shit guitarist) but do I care????? ha ha
Smokin! This is an easy thumb up right here. A good nickname for you might be "intimidator".
@1Jisom Funnily enough Jeff....this is exactly the same feeling I get when I listen to Roy Buchannan.......he makes me feel like ....."whats the fucking point" ?????? ....One of the main reasons I don't play too much electric
Please, do we know who are the people who are "lowering him down" in the photo shown at 1:50?
the images were ones that I harvested off the internet ....no info attached to them unfortunately
Thanks man....."intimidator" ??? ....I was a little intimidating many years ago six feet two ...200+ lbs..... now I,m just a wizened old man ha ha
Thanks Jonathan and apologies for the delay in replying .....I,m away from home and have very little internet access ....although I,m pretty shit with computers anyway ha ha ........thanks again my friend all the best ...Kev
@karlake2 P.S....you should give "silverback" by claudia volf a listen....its in my favourites if you have trouble searching.....its amazing....Kev
Would you see that my grave is kept clean ? Merci d'avance.
Marc Ballan No need to thank me in advance Marc ..... its the one kind favour we could all do with (except I was thinking of been cremated so don't actually need a grave) take care my friend ....Kev
@Lansdownekid Ha Ha Ha....Cheers Harry......I don't suppose you recognised anyone from the robin hoods bay pics in the other video did you (Nah you would have been too young in 1970 to be knocking around with us old men) .....
@electricragtime Eh cheep wine? I'm on my way, it looks nice down there, and some block promised me a ride. No not heard from Ian for a while. Take it easy out there in that heat, whilst our *****cks freeze off over here.
@electricragtime Pretty funny your dad would think of Muddy, etc. as "those new guys that are ruining the music". Interesting looking at the history, many of those guys were products of the prison systems down there, esp. Angola. Because the black Baptist preachers attacked the blues so violently as being sinful, you'd just about have to declare your independence from "proper society" to be a blues musician. Many were quoted as saying "Going to Hell anyway, so might as well sing the blues."
WHO IS THIS!!!???
This is NOT Blind Lemon- please change the title of this video!!!
Are you sure this is BLJ
Hi Lynette.... I am sure this is "me" doing a cover of my favourite Blind Lemon song .... the text under the video does go a little way to explaining that but if you are anything at all like me you probably don,t read them (I know I rarely do) .... but more to the point did you enjoy listening to a miserable old fart like me abusing the crap out of a classic BLJ tune? ...... all the very best Lynette ....... Kev
Well, I love it! I learnt Jefferson's version in 1965. I usually do read them, however I was in a hurry. A guy at a recent reunion is learning the guitar and interesting in blues. He liked my input, I introduced him to Mance and he said it open up a new world to him. I remember saying this when I first heard Dylan and Leadbelly .. I have a group on Facebook Mudds Folkblues Cafe .. PS I am a jug band freak, love Doc Watson and Dave Van Ronk. AND I LOVE YOUR SINGING.xxxx
Tonight I put up several versions of this song .. !
this is misleading. you should have your name in the title.
UA-cam only allowed a certain amount of characters in any title (at the time of recording this) ....I had used up the characters and it wouldn't let me edit them ....but to be fair you only have to hear the first few notes and you realise that its not BLJ
@electricragtime You were indeed extremely fortunate to have such an erudite father who could instill the same appreciation in you. If there was ever "the gift that keeps on giving", it would be certainly be something along those lines.
Great stuff. Proud of you. Oh my.
