    How to improve the network setup with an old router?
    Step one, buy a bunch of brand new routers. 10/10.

      well know if you actually watch the video and pay attention he states that some of them are quite a bit older like 2013 but because of a firmware update they can be added to a mesh a I essentially turning the router into a repeater as well..... And I guess you can run frequencies that support more broadband so it would actually be faster as well because you're getting all of your throughput it's not choking out or having a frequency conflict. so I guess you could say it's not technically faster but because it seemed less interruptions and less choking out it will run faster and better.

      More like: "Here are a bunch of routers and a sack of money. Find any excuse to show off our AiMesh feature." So he installs them for a friend at the friend's inlaws.
      There was no inconvenience, you can be sure they paid him. A guy with millions of subscribers doesn't care about a few free routers, he probably gets them sent all the time. He has plenty.

      The difference is that it is a mesh network. Rather than acting like an extender/booster a mesh network acts as one unit (hence the mesh name). This means you aren't killing your WiFi speeds through interference but are still expanding the network. This is why the Orbi and Google mesh were both widely popular. (Google still is.)

    • @michrech
      @michrech 5 років тому +8

      I have an extremely good router. I also have a great AP. A single router simply cannot properly send 2.4GHz and 5GHz (especially the latter) throughout all three stories, plus the outdoor locations that were shown. The manufacturers are limited as to how much power they can pump through their radios, which combined with the frequencies in use and building materials / furniture, will limit how far the signals can propagate. That you think otherwise shows your complete lack of understanding of how wireless hardware works.

    • @rossharper1983
      @rossharper1983 5 років тому +11

      Michael Rechtien not true. I have a three story house built with breeze blocks and brick (including interior support walls), can stream 4K on top floor, at bottom of garden in hot tub (40 yards) all thanks to a good router. My neighbours even use my WiFi when on their top floor because mine gives them better reception than there's does.

      Doing a simple speed test 1) doesn't last long enough to show sustained transfers, especially when footage is being recorded and 2) creating multiple simultaneous high-ish bandwidth connections is a much more close to how people would end up using their network, and is thusly a better test.

    • @Shadowtrot
      @Shadowtrot 5 років тому +12

      A speedtest and real-life usage scenario can vary WILDLY. My mother's home internet connection should get 30 Mbps down, but while I can stream a 4k50 video at 2x speed from UA-cam just fine, some websites/servers can't sustain more than 50 KBps unless I run something like 20 simultaneous downloads (I actually did this just to test), and probably run it through a VPN, in which case they can reach a combined bandwidth greater than or equal to the UA-cam stream.
      Don't do AT&T kids. It's bad for you(r gaming experience).

  • @I4get42
    @I4get42 5 років тому +3

    I'm glad it worked so well for you, but my favorite part of AImesh is that it does support wired nodes. Since you already had some wired locations you could have vastly increased your total throughput by not forcing your backhaul onto the wifi (shared with clients, and half duplex ). By wiring up the additional routers, Asus is suddenly running a lot more like Aruba's IAP's or Ruckus's Unleashed, but on the cheap. Can't wait for them to add in second SSID support for a guest/ IOT network all over the house too.

  • @markevans2157
    @markevans2157 5 років тому

  • @supersayianz
    @supersayianz 5 років тому +14

    I had the AImesh set up during April to May period. I got to say the um procedures wasn't as easy as this lol as Linus only showed the main parts. The complicated part is when your old routers are not in node mode, and you have to reconfigure them as nodes before it can be even detected on the main node itself.
    As good as AImesh is, if your moving too fast from node to node the wifi signal phones doesn't switch quickly resulting in a restart/reset of apps/softwares.
    So yep...

    I know it's not always feasible, but running an Ethernet cable between your AI Mesh routers makes that system work even better. I have two AC68U routers mounted on the ceiling at either end of our house because there is a giant brick hearth between my housemates and I that nothing I tried could permeate at 5.4GHZ. I love it. Basically you don't have to worry about how many devices are connected in total, only to each respective router.

  • @ArtiePenguin1

    What's up with the pointless logo blurring?? It isn't even consistent. At 9:16 the LG logo peeks through for 2 separate scenes. I'm sure you guys didn't have to blur the logos out so much, even going as far as blurring out the already faded Ford truck logo. Surely Asus' requirements for this video weren't that strict - you even name-dropped a TCL television as a suggestion for the outdoor hot tub area.

Plus it was that bad that even the Ookla speed checker refused to connect and test my speeds. The Internet loaded so slow that even 144p was unplayable by that point. Now I'm at 70-105mbps on a Virgin Media 108mbps plan here in the UK which is amazing. Can play full 1080p60 and even 4K60 on my phone, 2 monitors and even two TV's. Great job VM!

    • @TheythinkimNinja

    • @Mindereak
      @Mindereak 5 років тому +8

      The point is that you are not getting faster wifi with your old router, you are adding more devices to get that "faster wifi". Literally first thing they do is disable wifi on the original one...

    • @TheHordeQ
      @TheHordeQ 5 років тому +2

      The point is that the firmware upgrade exists to mesh with old asus hardware. You don't need any new hardware if you have old asus routers that's just what Asus sent to them. You people have your heads firmly lodged in your own asses.

    • @Mindereak
      @Mindereak 5 років тому +4

      No. First thing first the "old" Asus hardware you are talking about aren't the cheap ones but the top of the line ones so we are already talking about very good hardware and not something that everyone has laying around. Second thing, even if you have said compatible hardware that's not enough to "get faster wifi on your old router" becuase YOU STILL NEED TO BUY ANOTHER ONE TO ADD TO YOUR MESH! This video is literally this: "do you want to get better wifi coverage? buy a wifi extender" they just did it with Asus' AiMesh instead and clickbaited the title.

    I just IAMeshed three RT-AC66U B1 Routers, Refurbs, $60 each. Works great. Might add a 4th if needed for outside later. The pro's is that you can roam and not think about changing SSID's or anything else. The con is that it is all on same channels but so far I have not seen a negative effect from that. It is definitely a "I do not want have to think about it again" solution as opposed to Repeaters and AP's that need a little love along the way.

    • @GoldenDumpling
      @GoldenDumpling 5 років тому +4

      802.11k, 802.11r and 802.11v are used to facilitate roaming fast and seamlessly. When APs are linked and support these, you avoid dropping calls/connections, or having to disconnect and reconnect manually to use the faster AP (despite having the same SSID). They allow the client to get signal information about it's transmit strength to the AP, among other things. Ideally roaming occurs in 50-150ms.
      Providing an optimized list of APs to roam to, aka Neighbor Reports (802.11k)
      Providing information about the traffic load on other APs (802.11v)
      Speeding up the roaming process by providing fast authentication (802.11r)
      www.smallnetbuilder.com/basics/wireless-basics/33180-how-to-fix-wi-fi-roaming
      support.apple.com/en-us/HT202628
      revolutionwifi.blogspot.com/2011/12/wi-fi-roaming-analysis-part-1.html
      According to the SmallNetBuilder article ASUS AiMesh uses a proprietary system to do roaming, with no support mentioned for 802.11k/v/r. The article says some older clients may refuse to connect if 802.11r is enabled, so maybe this is for a reason. Forum reports on SmallNetBuilder say the ASUS roaming works pretty well, with minimal hiccups when auto switching APs while on a video call.
      You can still use wires with ASUS AiMesh to get full speed, while getting the benefits of smoother roaming.
      For wireless AiMesh, if you use the AC-5300 you get a 4x4 5 Ghz backhaul band/radio, in addition to separate 4x4 2.4 Ghz and 4x4 5 Ghz client radios. 4x4 5 Ghz is pretty darn close to wired if you just down going a floor, but it is costly for what it is, and you need 2.
      If you can wire one AP to the router, but the second one is out of reach, getting 2 AC-5300s as AiMesh extenders/slaves should net better performance than any off the shelf mesh networking system. All the mesh/wifi system kits I've seen have only 2x2 2.4 Ghz and 2x2 5 Ghz for servicing clients. Mesh systems that have a separate 4x4 or 2x2 5 Ghz for backhaul can't use that band for clients in wired mode as far as I've seen.
      Reports on the the SmallNetBuilder forums show that clients can connect on the second 5 Ghz band while it is being used for backhaul, and that even 2.4 Ghz can be used for backhaul when the signal is poor.
      The processor is slow on the older AC-5300 so you'll want to get an RT-86U as the router/master, it can route close to a gigabit with QoS and gaming enhancement enabled, and takes over processing duties for the AiMesh slaves.
      For about $750 for all 3 routers you'll get 4x4 5 Ghz everywhere, 3x3 2.4 Ghz near the RT-86U master, and 4x4 2.4 Ghz near the 2 RT-AC5300s slaves. If you wire the second RT-AC5300 you will get 8x8 5 Ghz near both RT-AC5300s, which is only really useful if you have a LOT of clients connected at once.

    • @GoldenDumpling

      Oops, I meant "two 4x4 5 Ghz bands for clients" in the last sentence, not "8x8 5 Ghz".

    I would have liked to seen a test with just the one asus router to see how much improvement the AI mesh actually had over just a high end router. I would imagine the signal would be a ton better than the "gateway" garbage anyway. I dont want to assume the worst, but it does have the feel of making the AI mesh look like it is doing way more than it is, just because they are a sponsor.
