On play:
Rest up to a total of 2 of your opponent's Characters or DON!! cards. Then, add 1 card from the top of your Life cards to your hand.
On play effects are mandatory so you have to do both things this effect tells you to do. But because the first effect is 'up to' using the effect on 0 targets is fine. But that has no impact on how the second effect plays out, you have to take a life.

With Hody Jones you HAVE to Take a Life if you have one. Just when sitting at 0 Life you dont have to "Take" a Life cause you got none
