The problem with Neal Brown is that he puts the team in hard situations due to bad play calling then blames his team for not capitalizing on things they wouldn't have to capitalize on if they weren't put in that situation to begin with. It's coronation vs causation..

I am an old school fan from back in the day when Bobby Bowden was our HC. Long suffering when it comes to coaches. I even think the firing of Curt Cignetti Sr. was way too soon. I tolerated Dana... I've stood by Neal Brown up until this very moment. We were told by Brown we had a good football team. We might. But Neal Brown cannot coach it. It's over!

You shouldn't feel bad for us Mountaineer fans. The only way we're going to get out of this Neal Brown nightmare of mediocrity is to have such a bad season that Wren Baker has no choice but fire Brown. Brown is in over his head as a power 4 head coach. You can see it in his eyes. If you go back and listen to the last 5 years of his press conferences after losses, he says the same thing about how fix the problems that constantly plague his teams. He says, "I just don't know what to do....." and then he fills in the rest of the sentence with whatever asinine issue plagued the team that game. Usually its related to undisciplined play, which is a hallmark of his teams. I think that we are the only team in history of Power 4 football that stopped the opponent on 3rd down of their first possession in overtime and still lose by 13! That's almost impossible, but yet a Neal Brown team found a way to do that! WVU looked as bad in most of their wins last year as they did in their losses. Their best skill is giving up a first down on 3rd and really long. I mean we had Pitt in a 1st and 30 situation. Of course they got a first down! While you can shake your head at it, we WV fans are actually used to it. We're just waiting for it to happen because it always does! I like Neal Brown. He's a nice guy. He had great success at Troy, but it hasn't transferred to WV, and it seems that it never will. It's time to move on from Neal Brown. It will be interesting to see where he ends up. Maybe he'll figure it out somewhere else? A lot of things have changed since his Troy days! He's got to change too!

Brown's done, but no moves till end of the year. Building up all of our hopes just to crap the bed, massively, in two of the first 3 games? Done. We haven't been ranked ONCE since Neal took over. That is just unacceptable. If we had been told that at the time of the hiring - only over 0.500 due to FCS wins, and not being ranked in the top 25 a single week at any point in his tenure? No one would have called that acceptable.

I expect they keep Brown through the season, for a better "buyout" package. Plus end of season is when coaches free up, so they get better replacement choices. I am tired of bringing in small-school coaches and hoping for a better outcome. They don't need a Bryant/Saban/Paterno type, but there has got to be better choices than Troy.

Also wanted to mention West Virginia's president gee leaves next year. So Baker may try to get a new football coach before he leaves and then maybe not. But there's always a possibility a new president comes in and fires everyone including Baker the athletic director even though he's newer. Put some of these presidents want their own people. Penn State has never really been a "rival" as much as Pitt is, it's kind of how Marshall views WVU as a "rival" even though we never play them and we're like 9-0 all time vs them. PSU leads the series 50-9...it's never been a rivalry or competitive. I've been a WVU fan since the late 80s and I'd consider Pitt the no 1 rival, and even VT or Maryland a bigger rival for us than PSU.
I've wanted him fired since the end of season 4. It's been clear since the first couple of seasons that he doesn't play to win. There is a portion of our fanbase that is delusional because he's a nice guy off the field, but he can't win(He's sub .500 against FBS), he can't recruit, and he can't surround himself with successful coaches. We make the same mistakes in year 6 that we made in year 1. Team isn't prepared, defense has always been bad, we play soft and not to lose instead of with aggression and to win the game.
Knowing WVU, we won't make any moves during the season, because we've never done that. Coaching search is likely underway, behind closed doors most of the big money boosters/donors are already done and were already restless after the Houston debacle last season. Hopefully we can get a good OC/DC from a current power program. Brown needs to go back to the Sunbelt because that's about the only level he can coach at.

There would be no denying that the blame is squarely on his shoulder for the program's complete decline. WVU football has everything it takes to succeed, including some of the best facilities in the country and one of the best NIL collectives. There's no reason we should be unsuccessful. So next year will be one of our easier schedules and then we're back to playing hard schedules with Alabama.
