Yes, they have to be square. When the hole is square, and when you hit the arms, it will move sideways horizontally, or when you hit the arms at a 45 degrees, it will move upwards at that angle. This will prevent you from injuring your arms and it will give a better feeling as the dummy arms gives and moves. Also it will prevent the arms from spinning.
