- In May 1942, Hitler's U-Boats unleashed the most devastating assault in the entire Battle of the Atlantic, sinking over 100,000 tons of cargo in the Gulf of Mexico. Louisiana became the center of the US Navy's strategy to defend the Gulf from submarine attacks, and in this video we will explore the forces facing each other in the Gulf, the bases built to contain the U-boat threat, and how the campaign was resolved.

Forgotten history is right. I recall seeing fortifications on Galveston Island but it never came up in school. In fact most WW2 books don't mention the Gulf of Mexico at all. Dad was an Atlantic spotter flying PBY's out of Jacksonville NAB in '42.
Around 700 U-boats were sunk in the North Atlantic. Some are still being found off coasts. 3 off Cornwall sunk in 1945 in a British minefield found recently. Sent from Norway to attack shipping in the Bristol Channel.
My father and one other Coast Guard member were stationed at Aransas Pass during the war.
Had a coworker from the coast of Texas. Per him the locals and his family all believed there was a U-Boat stuck somewhere in the coastal marshes
I love your videos. They are a great teaching tool. Please know that Baton Rouge does not get its drinking water from the Mississippi River. That’s why our water is so soft, which is why it’s so difficult to rinse suds from your hair after washing.
Doenitz U-boats were in action in the Gulf and East Coast USA. So this video is correct.
The info, your presentation, and the footage are great!
But dude, take a breath.
Your audio is cut so there is no breathing room and it sounds like one long 12 minute sentence.
But that is my only complaint, great video!
Great video thank you.
Interesting. I like to think of myself as a bit of a history buff, but have never heard of this U Boat activity in the gulf.
Check out U-166. That's the boat he's going to talk about. There's a 45 min documentary with Robert Ballard as they explore what happened. You'll be surprised at such a lucky shot from Sub Chaser PC-566 that took her down.
Alot of metal used in ww2. Sweden supplied 40% of the iron ore to germany
U 166? Was that the one sniped by a Cuban Navy subchaser with a single depth charge?
Wasn't Cuban Navy. Was the U.S. sub chaser PC-566. Yes U-166 was sunk by depth charge landing on the deck and cooking off one or more of their torpedoes.
Too much bla bla bla.
I watched your video. The videos are beautiful. Video quality is very nice but like view subscribe is very low, another is more, if you have you can be a professional youtuber. Do you want to be a professional?
