I freaking love Stroman. He still needs improvement in certain areas, especially when it comes to giving up hard contact and base hits, but his energy is awesome and he eats up innings. He's was the only consistent arm for the Jays this year.
Stroman is either going to continue being wildly different each year or he's going to be incredibly stable. As a guy with great stuff but pitching as a contact pitcher, he's a high floor, but middling ceiling pitcher. This year, he was excellent. Last year, he wasn't, with an ERA of 4.37. And the weird thing is that his underlying numbers didn't change much between either. He lives and dies by the luck of the batted ball, and it's doubtful that he'll ever live up to the fantastic strikeout numbers he put up in the minors. He's not a true ace, but if he manages to attain the stability that his underlying numbers prompt, he'll be a valuable #2 guy. Great highlights as usual, MVPFLF. I'm torn between looking forward to my team's highlights and hoping you don't get to put them up until we have our rings xD
EonArashi His slider is unbelievable. I think if he pitches more up in the zone with the 4 seam fastball, he'll have the stuff to get consistent swings and misses rather than operating primarily as a sinkerballer. That could make him a true ace
The problem with that idea is that his 4-seam was his worst pitch both this year and last. It gets hammered more consistently than anything else he throws. He'd probably actually be better if he dropped it entirely. And if he throws more sliders, he's going to dramatically increase his injury risk. The man's 5'8", 180 lbs and throws 94 on average. He's already an injury waiting to happen if he tries to go full-on strikeout pitcher. I really enjoy watching him work, but I think he's about at his peak in terms of long-term ability.
He just turned 26 and hes had to overcome a bunch of shit. Dont count him out as an ace yet. 4th in the AL in era and still holds a 3.61 career era, including a year of disappointment after his injury.
I appreciate that. The thing is, none of his peripherals are ace-like or elite except his ground ball rate. Pretty much everything else (K%, Walk%, Contact management, FIP, xFIP, SIERA) is either above average or good, but not elite, and hasn't varied more than a couple points in any given direction. That's why I think he's a #2 guy rather than a full-on Ace. The strikeout rate in the minors is one thing, but a lot of guys fail to live up to their minor league K rates, and I don't think he'll get any stronger because his already small frame is maxed out. His pitch mix might improve, but that alone probably won't bridge the gap. I love Stroman, but he's not an Ace. He's like James Shields in his prime, a strong pitcher who might have a couple brilliant years but overall will be just good rather than great.
