This song has long been a folk and drinking song. It is performed on behalf of the Cossack, who was predicted to die in the near future. Diana performed it in a folk manner, but at the level of high art.
Not just any Cossack, but Stepan Razin, a Don Cossack leader who led a major uprising against the Tsar in the 1600s. Essentially, these guys were very early cowboys (except, y'know, a lot more ethnically indigenous to the land lol) living wild and free out on the steppe along the Don River and Stepan Razin led them against the encroaching Tsarist government and nobility. Like all Russian history, it's dramatic and tragic. Razin is captured in the end and executed on Red Square, but only after a truly legendary life. This song - like OP says - is him waking up from a nap in which he has a dream about a sudden gust of wind from the East (where the Tsar is coming from) blowing his hat off his head. His friend/top general reads his dream to mean he's going to lose his head, which... he does. It's some good old-fashioned Russian storytelling that gives you goosebumps if you really dive into it all.
Dude excellent reaction is always. But you've got to hear her performance during the Hans Zimmer concert as she sings Paul's story from the soundtrack of Dune. It's an Arabic call to action prayer form. But she shows us her limit. Believe it or not and she belts this thing from the top of the dune in full chest. Belting unlike I've ever heard before on this planet. You almost expect to see plaster falling from the ceiling. Some of the audience members said they felt almost pushed into the seats from her enormous belting. She also has an orchestra with drums and electric guitars. It's beyond description. I almost expect to see worms from Arrakis come to honor her and her voice of command. It's just mind-boggling. It's truly my boggling. Plan on big speakers because their voice rattles the house. Please let this be your next reaction of her. I can't understand how she holds those notes so long and so loudly and so firmly. She's reaching down into the earth and dragging it all up and giving it all to us.
She's AnkuDInova. It would be interesting to see your reaction to her latest performance in "The Art of Hans Zimmer", the soundtrack to the film "Dune" ("Paul's Dream"), with her 5-minute belting on almost one note.
She has so much new stuff that you have to listen too! Not just on her regular page but she has a "Diana Life" page where she just did Dune and a James Bond soundtrack with Hans Zimmer....... a must watch for you

Thanks for another analysis of Diana's voice Peter - your insight is very helpful. An interview between you would be very interesting - hopefully it can be arranged. As for your next look at Diana, perhaps you could try her recent live performance of "Paul's Dream" from the "Dune" soundtrack : ua-cam.com/video/AzO5OXJY-J0/v-deo.html There are two versions, I've linked the performance from St Petersburg on 12th November 2023.
For the first time the text of this song was printed in 1899 from the words of a 75-year-old Cossack. It is impossible to say how old this song really is. Lyrics close to this song were published in 1866. The operatic version of this folk song was written and performed in 1949 as a byline for voice and symphony orchestra - "Stepan Razin's Dream". Stepan Razin - Don Cossack, ataman of the Don Army, leader of the uprising of 1667-1671, the largest in the history of pre-Petrine Russia. He was defeated and quartered. He became the hero of many folk songs, works of fiction, painting and cinema.
This is an over 300 year old folk song about a Cossack warrior who dreams of his death in an imminent battle. On Diana's face you see sadness, anxiety and pain of the soul of the Cossack warrior. One would swear she borrowed that soul to perform the song. I'm not sure how many people appreciate the emotional gasps she produces here that absolutely melt me.
Her voice is unbelievable. Like first hearing a bell, saxophone or any instrument it doesn't matter what she sings it's fascinating. Her emotions are next level too, including facial expressions. Typical for her funny attitude she commented this perfomance as "the dance and wiggling of the eyebrows".
I like the folk-song performances (or modern ones done with that theme such as Baikal). This one is a very well-known Cossack folk song. I hope you can set up an interview! Your pronunciation of her name is not quite there yet ;) pro-tip: her name is mentioned twice in the Can't Help Falling in Love video :)
She sings live against a prerecorded "minus" (orchestration track without a voice, except for back vocals). Thank you very much for the reaction! What a great idea that interview!
So excited that you are analyzing the wonderful and amazing Diana Ankudinova once again. Her voice and artistry have utterly captivated me. This performance is powerful - at 18, too! What a talent!
I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of this girl’s incredible voice. (And I honestly have quite a low range, and what’s amazing to me is not feeling like I have to pitch my voice up to sing to Diana’s performances.) Best of luck with securing an interview, that would absolutely be something.
Diana sings live, but to the accompaniment of a previously recorded orchestra and backing vocals (her own voice). As for her vocal range, she takes quite high notes (for a soprano, although she has a contralto): for example, in the song "The Day you..."
Thank you for another wonderful, detailed analysis of Diana's voice. Diana recently performed a live concert honoring the music of Hans Zimmer. Her performance of the song from Dune was as epic as the movie itself. She really lets loose in this performance. I think you would really enjoy it.
Great analysis as always. Please consider writing her full name on the title because your video does not pop up if people search with her name, i found it by luck, you would have way way more views by now.
I hope you understand how much we all appreciate these analyses…not just for Diana (though she is the main reason I subscribed) but for all of the artists you feature. This kind of quality and competency is rare to find in reaction videos and it’s refreshing to see people who really know what they’re talking about and can deliver every time Also, an interview with her would be super interesting! I’m sure it could be arranged in one way or another. Btw there is also a small chance that she has personally seen your videos before since she actually does watch reactions; you never know, maybe she’ll see this one and be prompted to reach out. I’m sure there are more direct ways to get in contact with her but I don’t know exactly how, so I wish you luck there Appreciate the video!!
Peter you are interesting to listen to and most importantly your opinion is professional. Thank you for the analysis of Diana's vocals, 25 minutes flew by without a second thought. Diana has a very busy schedule now and as always has big plans, I hope you can cooperate and do the interview. Good luck.
Beautiful melody, fantastic presentation by Diana. I believe the key for an interview is,,,,,, Is Diana familiar with the third cousin? Elizabeth from the chrizmatic voice tried to interview but didn't workout. This was after her voice teacher passed away from covid. Need to proceed through proper channels. What those are I have no clue. Could be possible because of a trusted interpreter. Also believe that Diana understands English better now than a few years ago. As stated, Diana does watch reaction videos, most likely she has seen yours because of your professional background. Good luck with this, hope to watch this interview. I always take time to watch your reviews and watch all Bass Gang releases. Good job Sir!
Hi Peter, I would love to see you interview Diana. She recently perform the Cover of the Dune soundtrack with a live orchestra it is out of this world. Would love you to react to that
Interesting your reaction (as always). I'm always checking to see if you're still reviewing any of Diana's performances. If you manage to get an interview with Diana it would basically be a BOOOM!!! I really want it to happen! I'm going to do my fan duty and write Diana in a comment about it too. And I say, like other commenters here, that maybe you should check out the ”Dune” soundtrack as Diana, I'd really be curious to hear what you have to say. And by the way, you didn't put the accent right, it's not anKUdinova, it's ankuDInova, I assure you 100%.
You can hear her RAW on her interview on muzloft. She sounds exactly the same, she is her own auto-tune. Crazy🤯 She's amazing and the only one in the world with that voice.
A pretty song performed in a flawless fashion. You reaction is wonderful, its rich with informative analysis. Enjoyed watching your reaction and learned many new things about Diana's unique voice, as well as her level of mastery over her vocal tracks, the timber and sadness of her voice that is out of this world. Strophic is the new definition I have learned today an addition to my rather humble and limited knowledge about music, which is wonderful. Thanks for posting the video and bravo for a job well done.
I do love every analysis reaction you make, we can learn a lot about Diana's technique and how she place her voice in her songs, if you want to analize her highest note made, please react to her track "The day you" that's original from her and she sounds ravishing, thank you for your great job, bro, we really appreciate it!
I would be super eager to see an interview with her if you are able to get it. That would be just amazing! My low end stops around D3, with C3 obtainable about half the time, and B2's on morning voice. But I don't have the same kind of darkness in my timbre as she has. She has a wonderful smoky sound in her voice that's just captivating. I just can't get enough of her voice. It's unique for sure.
Also a quick note on the name of the show: it's a bit of a play on words. When you hear the announcers say the name, it comes out as "Show Moscow On". The Russian "A" uses the same sound as "father" or "car" in English
I’m pretty sure it’s a reference to the show Mask which is aired on the same TV network, and which many of the participants had been on (like Yulia Parshuta)
It is Show Mask go on (play of words-Show Must Go On). All those judges are also participating in the competition, and basically judge each other. The guy in the hat, the one that was recording her on the phone, is the jury president at Russian version of The Masked singer, and all others were the former singers in the show.
Dude! I've been waiting so long for a serious reaction to this performance, possibly my favorite by Diana! Then you start teasing a possible interview 😮
Thanks man for another great review! You are right, while this was a great rendition by Diana, I’ve heard this song with chorus production and it sounds epic. Looking forward to your interview of Diana. And, as I posted about a year ago, I would absolutely love to see your and Diana collaboration… I know, it may sound crazy… 😮
I feel like I learned a lot in this episode! What darkens a voice, how to push chest voice higher, how a dark female voice might differ in a performance - and play into it. I feel like women generally think they have to sing high to shine, so thanks for being a part of making diverse voices more popular.
Hi, Peter. I would love to see a song with you and Diana Ankudinova. I believe that would be epic. Your bass is mesmerizing and enchanting...her contralto is like listening to a queen siren enchantress. You should also react to her "Baikal" and "In My Huge City". The song brings Sade back to my memory. What A Sweet Tune. If you can, please interview her. I'm going to her UA-cam site to request the interview between the two of you. It would be quite interesting if it happens.
You would probably really, really, really enjoy Diana's live performance with an orchestra singing on a huge stage singing a song from the DUNE movie soundtrack. Non-stop belting and vocalizations in this performance is other-worldly...kinda fitting for a sci-fi movie. Enjoy your breakdown of Diana.
Another terrific reaction, Peter, to one of my favourite Diana performances. She conveys so much with just her eyes, her hands, let alone her extraordinary voice. I would absolutely love to see you do an interview with her. I don't think any other reactor could pull it off as well as you would. Please do chase that and make it happen.
Hi Peter. Thanks for your intelligent and useful reaction. Please try to arrange an interview with Diana. It would be truly awesome. I will leave a comment on her website. Regards from Cape Town South Africa 😊
Please check her singing "The day you..." with Brandon Stone, she goes high and you can see her tongue quite well 😊! Another one is "Dune" soundtrack that Diana sings!
Would be nice to see the interview with her on this channel. I recently watched one in Russian and she had quite a sad life as a child. As for this song, this is a Russian traditional folk song but not the one that a mother would sing to a daughter. It is more a song that people would sing all together when they gather for some celebration, eat and drink. But yes, every Russian knows it. Also, about Diana last name, the stress is on the letter i, not u. So, it would sound like Ankud’i-nova
Many thanks to you, Peter, for, as always, a very professional analysis of Diana Ankudinova's work. Your professional opinion is always very interesting. Thank you.
👉This sad folk song is about a Cossack who tells his bad dream and suspects that he will die. This song is well known in Russia - a folk hit. (The Russian folk soul loves melancholy, sad songs. Such songs are called 'crying.'). Diana hits the heart with her voice. I feel the fear and despair of the Cossack.Diana hits my heart with her voice. I feel the fear and despair of the Cossack. Just as the ice freezes under Diana's feet, my soul trembles with every step and these plaintive tones. The guest of honor said Diana would one day be as famous as the well-known legendary Russian singer Ludmila Zykina. Marc Tishman, one of the singers and jurors, gave a wonderful rating. He did not see the Cossack on stage who has a frightening dream of falling from his horse, but he saw a beautyful bride who is about to be married and who is worried about how her life will go. The first existing recording of this song was made in the 1880s by a 75-year-old Cossack. Who were the Cossack? The word comes from the Turkic (not Turkish) 'quzzaq' which means adventurer or free man. - were escaped serfs and adventurers. (Difference between Turkic and Turkish - ua-cam.com/video/PqxhtBecVeg/v-deo.html ). The history of the Cossack is very changeable and painful. These fierce warriors, who are excellent riders, have an air of romance about them. They lived quite isolated in the southern steppe region of Eastern Europe, Ukraine and the Asian part of Russia. Living in the middle of nowhere, they have developed their own culture and tradition, which is expressed in a certain way of life, in their own songs, clothes, etc. Initially, the Cossack were oppressed by Catherine II and put up resistance. Catherine II soon recognized the advantages of border protection by light cavalry and assigned the Cossack their own territories on all of the empire's endangered borders. They provided the best riders in the Russian cavalry. Loyalty to the tsars was rewarded with a great deal of independence and special rights. But precisely because the Cossack always stood by the tsars, they were persecuted, exterminated or deported after the 1917 revolution. But the Cossack spirit, traditions and especially their music did not dissipate. Cossack songs are one of the most important elements of their ethnic identity. During World War II, Cossack in Europe volunteered under German command in hopes of returning home. After the German defeat, the Cossack were handed over by the Western Allies to the USSR (Stalin) in Lienz/East Tyrol on June 1, 1945, in violation of the Geneva Convention. Stalin pursued the Cossack and finally destroyed them. Many were deported to Siberia. During the Soviet era, especially in the Stalin era after World War II, the number of Cossack fell from an estimated 11 million to 140,000. Only in 1992 were the Cossack rehabilitated by Boris Yeltsin (perestroika). Only a few Cossack survived and are now trying to build a new life for themselves. For centuries, the Cossack kept to their customs, especially their music, an art of expression full of deep melancholy and exuberant temperament. These songs live on in the hearts of Russians. (www) * This song is sung by many Russian artists, the most famous being Pelageya (You should watch it): Ой,да не вечер/ Oh at this evening - ua-cam.com/video/mMx228QVT3E/v-deo.html * Ludmila Zykina (1929-2009) Подари мне платок/ Give me a handkerchief - ua-cam.com/video/Wn0Up3aXadU/v-deo.html

Best of luck getting an interview, if you can offer her a trusted translator that may put you over the edge with her. It's a tough climate at the moment for American-Russian relationships and do realize she studies at a state university so she has to be aware of these things. My guess is it will be hard to get her to talk to the west at the moment. Maybe when this whole mess clears up. Could be a few years. But she is young and developing, she will only get better and more interesting to talk to as time goes by. I fully expect things to sort themselves out in the mid term. Regardless, I hope you pull it off. You would be one of the best people out there to produce an interesting interview with her. As for reactions what she did with the theme from Dune by Hans Zimmer, especially if compared to the original movie score, should be a priority and is as epic a song as she has ever done. On Wings of Wind would be interesting for you, to hear her sing an operatic piece. And her version of California Dreaming is also lovely. But anything she does is worth a reaction to be honest.
Always such a joy to analyze Diana's amazing voice! I hope you all enjoy. Any other performances from her that I still need to check out?

Your Diana reactions never disappoint. She is so unique indeed.

Wow!
An interview with Diana?
That would be wonderful and fascinating!
This is such an amazing performance by Diana Ankudinova!
The judges are not feeling the text, but they are feeling Diana's dominance in vocalization and her incredible voice and they are all blown away!
I would be very interested to hear your interview with Diana, good luck to you.
Amazing voice as always... and a great analysis as always :)
I think you would find Diana's cover of Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus interesting.
She is my absolute favorite singer right now
Great analysis as always.
Please consider writing her full name on the title because your video does not pop up if people search with her name, i found it by luck, you would have way way more views by now.
I only just found this today via a Facebook link.
I hope you understand how much we all appreciate these analyses…not just for Diana (though she is the main reason I subscribed) but for all of the artists you feature. This kind of quality and competency is rare to find in reaction videos and it’s refreshing to see people who really know what they’re talking about and can deliver every time
Also, an interview with her would be super interesting! I’m sure it could be arranged in one way or another. Btw there is also a small chance that she has personally seen your videos before since she actually does watch reactions; you never know, maybe she’ll see this one and be prompted to reach out. I’m sure there are more direct ways to get in contact with her but I don’t know exactly how, so I wish you luck there
Appreciate the video!!
Dune should be your next reaction she kill it a must see.
Peter you are interesting to listen to and most importantly your opinion is professional. Thank you for the analysis of Diana's vocals, 25 minutes flew by without a second thought. Diana has a very busy schedule now and as always has big plans, I hope you can cooperate and do the interview. Good luck.
Meravigliosa Diana ❤❤❤
Thanks for once again introducing me to an outstanding vocalist. She's special. I've never heard a voice like hers before. That gave me goosebumps!
Wow. Her voice is amazing every time I hear it. Thanks, Peter!
Thanks so much :]
What a strong voice! So amazing ❤
Dear Peter, many thanks for superb analysis of Diana`s song. Could you do analysis on Diana`s `Dune` performance please?
I do love every analysis reaction you make, we can learn a lot about Diana's technique and how she place her voice in her songs, if you want to analize her highest note made, please react to her track "The day you" that's original from her and she sounds ravishing, thank you for your great job, bro, we really appreciate it!
Nothing is better than professional singer like you analysing Diana. I respect you so so much. ❤
Amazing analysis of a fantastic singer. THX.
@@hearingninjaOh, yeah, I'm sure it is that too. I was just thinking of the pronunciation when I commented earlier. Thanks for the info 🙂
Show Mask Go On)
It is Show Mask go on (play of words-Show Must Go On). All those judges are also participating in the competition, and basically judge each other. The guy in the hat, the one that was recording her on the phone, is the jury president at Russian version of The Masked singer, and all others were the former singers in the show.
This is one of my favorite Diana songs, and you are my favorite Diana reactor, so expectations are high!
@PeterBarber 22:55 note the stress is in fact on i in Ankudinova - Ankudeenova. Top analysis as always!
Listen to her song the day you, she climbs into the sixth octave in it! It has reached a range of 5 octaves!!!!!
This is my favorite song of hers. I’ve listened to her sing this a hundred times! Just love it! 😍
Dude! I've been waiting so long for a serious reaction to this performance, possibly my favorite by Diana!
Then you start teasing a possible interview 😮
✨Oh! It was amazing!
🎵🎶💯
Thank you for your reaction!🙋♂
Hello Peter, thanks ❤👍👏👏👏 👍👍👍
Bravo Diana, bravo Peter! 👍👍👍👋👋👋❤️🇷🇺
I'll be all over this as soon as my boss goes out to lunch 😉😉
Thanks for the reaction!
Hi Peter. Thanks for your intelligent and useful reaction. Please try to arrange an interview with Diana. It would be truly awesome. I will leave a comment on her website.
Regards from Cape Town South Africa 😊
Great analysis, as ever Peter! I would love to see Diana do a duet with Dimash.
Excellent analysis. Great!
Thanks for the analysis. It´s so interesting how her vocal tract produces such a dark tamber without tounge or pharynx manipulation.
Many thanks to you, Peter, for, as always, a very professional analysis of Diana Ankudinova's work. Your professional opinion is always very interesting. Thank you.
Brilliant reaction, thank you
👉This sad folk song is about a Cossack who tells his bad dream and suspects that he will die.
(www)
* This song is sung by many Russian artists, the most famous being Pelageya (You should watch it): Ой,да не вечер/ Oh at this evening - ua-cam.com/video/mMx228QVT3E/v-deo.html
