The film is, essentially, the life of a modern saint.

Just watched this again after 9 years. It's aged well

Maybe life itself is just non-linear. Cinematically, he and Bardem merely told a story of life and having bladder cancer close to me, I can tell that THAT movie touched me in ways never surpassed by any other. By far the most humane movie I have ever seen, and guess why I've decided to not watch it again any time soon - it's just to damn close to me, loal. :D

Hmmm ... I feel is though this reviewer needs to lighten up.

so he dislikes the fact that the film doesn't answer the biggest questions in life? didn't realise inarritu ever proclaimed to be the next Plato..

so many film reviewers see a film as what they wish it was instead of taking it as what it actually is

Darren Arronofsky makes films that are dreary all the way through, yet no one tells him to lighten up. Sometimes, it's good to have an emotionally draining movie (Synecdoche New York; There Will be Blood; Children of Men; Requiem for a Dream).

Really like all Inarritu films. I don't find them dreary at all. Would like to see Biuitiful regardless of what anybody thinks of his previous films. People should watch movies they want to see regardless of the reviews.

It doesn't mean nothing... is a film about life and death in a trouble time .

@skinwalkerxxx Honestly there will be blood is one of my favorite films, i thought that 21 grams wouldve been a good film if it was 80% less nonlinear (you didn't get to know the characters till like 40 mins in), but i adore biutiful, it has flaws, but i think it is fantastic

The film maybe slow, underwritten & poorly directed, however the film’s still A well acted, well characterised, intriguing & an emotional drama story. (63%) (3/5 stars) (mixed to positive)

It's been 11 years since this interview and I'm wondering if this man is still trying to derive some grand meaning from the film where it can be perfectly upsetting as a mundane tragedy. Stretching yourself thin to try and forge something productive or useful or good just to see the damages of your oversight, all the while you, yourself, as a force, is fading.

Babel is a masterpiece. Kermode is WAY off on that one.

NOTE: The young actress who portrayed ANA (Hanaa Bouchaib) has seemed to have dropped off the planet...she never did another film or any work...no record of her anywhere. Curious and frustrating because she really shone in this film.

I agree that Firth's performance is not anything remarkable. Geoffrey Rush in the same film casually steals every scene.

@Guedingen I disagree, Inurritu uses dreary tales to project transcending ideas, 21 grams was WAYYY too nonlinear and did not give its characters time to develop, it was also pretty damn pretentious, but i thought it was ultimately uplifting, his films, again, use dreary narratives to project uplifting ideas about the afterlife and human interconnection

@moeezS Well there is a reason he is not told to do so. His movies are genuinely good, whereas Inarritus movies are generally pretentious and boring. Babel, for instance, has to be the worst movie I've ever seen that has garnered a lot of critical acclaim.

Coincidentally, i rewatched 21 grams yesterday. The unrelenting dreariness caused me to turn it off with 10 minutes to go, 'I just need him to lighten up' - spot on as usual.

i honestly think bardem should have been getting all the awards colin firth has been - and will continue - getting. it's not that firth isn't a decent actor, i just don't see anything new from one performance to the next. besides stammering, in this case. you know what you're going to get from colin firth before you see any of his performances. bardem's much more varied and interesting to watch. he's come a long way since bigas lunas' golden balls.

I dont think Mark is criticising the film for being dreary...he's criticising the lack of depth the drearyness has. A film can be tough going, but it needs to have some substance, something you can latch on too emotionally.
