    I'm really enjoying this series. Using the heater in our Leaf drastically reduces range, much more than cooling. It's not just the lack of noise when driving it's also the lack of vibration. In total, driving an EV is much less fatiguing than an ICE. Great music.

    Thanks Andrew for your flog on the EV towing the caravan, it is convincing me even more that a electric car towing my caravan is not for me . Because I live in the Highlands and do a lot of traveling with the van I think having to stop to charge the car every 80 to 100 miles and factor in the time on the charger my journey times could double.

    Hi Andrew, well what a change!! EV and new caravan......., yep, it goes to show, life is a dynamic series of experiences. Thank god for dynamism, I say. Consequently, I never expect any individual to remain constant or 'On Message' for too long. No matter how heart felt their message is delivered at the time they deliver it! Life, in my experience, does not work that way. Human Beings are not capable of machine like consistency, no matter how good they make it sound at the time. Although that may not sound fair, its a true reflection of human need for change. Without change, man stagnates. Its the 'Change' which allows one to grow. Without change, something sleeps inside and seldom awakens. "The sleeper must awaken"!!!

    Very interesting. Bought a new caravan earlier this month and saw your Airstream looking shiny & resplendent at the dealer's. Sadly too heavy for my Santa Fe to tow. But then the new van has all the mod cons with Alde central heating, more charging and TV points than you could shake a stick at, and the centre washroom and end fixed bedroom are ideal. Would have done it 2 years ago but Covid scuppered those plans as it would have been stupid to buy a new van and largely leave it parked up for 2 years!
    Keep the videos coming as they are all well produced and informative. Like seeing an old friend talk about my hobby/lifestyle and giving me things to think about.
    Hopefully 100+ nights a year in the new van. (Currently at Corbridge near Hexham in Northumberland at a £10 per night Temporary Holiday Site for 9 nights but have just arranged a trip up to Ullapool with the van for end-September. Can't wait).

    Hi Andrew
    I have an hybrid car as I live in the middle of the North York Moors and like to travel to other remote areas.
    What happened if you for whatever reason you totally run out of power?
    It’s not like you get a can out and go and get some petrol. Do you have to get a tow to a charging area?
    Or can you put some power in the car from a generator ? I was think of doing a video about this on my channel but happy for you to use the idea if you like it
    Keep up the great work

  • @andrewgrimshaw5180
    @andrewgrimshaw5180 2 роки тому

    These have been great videos and it has reaffirmed my opinion that longer journeys, especially when towing, are just impractical for the majority. Factoring in time to recharge, where to stop to recharge and having to unhook to recharge just make the journey lengthy and far less relaxing than it should be. I’ll stick to my diesel until there is a more practical way of travelling. On the “green” argument, I’m not convinced, certainly at the moment, that EV’s are green enough to warrant a change when you bear in mind how electricity is generated and how the minerals used for the batteries are mined and the processes used in making them.

    • @christianmarler21
      @christianmarler21 2 роки тому

      Not sure where you are but the lots off green electric in most places! Unfortunately people are very misinformed about things like that or how long battery last or how little charger the is! I think electric cars are great if you have two or more cars in your house and you need to tow more then 200 miles in a day.

  • @Daveindurham

    It would be interesting to see how the car works when travelling south instead of the train. I think the range would be a major disadvantage on a journey of several hundred miles, with too many overnight stops to charge up. I worked out that with the EV 6 it would take about at least 2 overnight stops to travel from home in Durham to the south coast. Adding costs for overnights and the time to the trip, one of the reasons why I decided against the Kia at the moment.

    • @andrewjditton

      Hi Alan, sadly you wouldn't be able to get enough panels on the caravan to get a charge into the car at a meaningful rate. You'd be looking at well over 10 times the number of (100-120w) panels that are the norm.

    I have no idea why people buy electric cars, or why they think they cause less pollution, but it's worth remembering that before Rockerfeller's oil empire got going for real, in the 1800s 40% of vehicles were electric, and in fact Jay Leno has a good video about one that he has, from that era. :)

    Loved this video! Thank you for this series, it's been very enjoyable as per!! Wow!! The cost of the electric compared to diesel is amazing but how long will it remain that way?! The price of the EV though is the bugbear! How long will these cars last as opposed to fossil fueled cars? That will be interesting! Dougal, bless him! I don't think you'll get any excitement from him now at the end of your vids! He just wants to snooze!! Hope your brother is doing well? How is you mum too? Mine is getting very frail and can't get about very well now! Docs tomorrow, shall keep fingers crossed for better news! Take care and enjoy the rest of your trip, I shall be up there in just over 5 weeks!! Sending you & Dougal massive hugs xxx 😘🐕🥰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      The cars last a lot longer than fossil fuel cars, so far, there are Teslas taxis that have done hundreds of thousands of miles, with minimal battery loss. On top of that, servicing an EV is very cheap: there's no oil, filter or belts to change!

      Thanks Anne! Those 5 weeks will go quick. I can't make it to either HebCelt or EDF as I'll be away on my next 'big' tour in a motorhome. Hope your mum's OK x

    27p / kWh? That’s really cheap. In England, Gridserve is now 48p and Instavolt 57p and those are the most common rapid chargers you come across. Mind you, most of my charging is at home and there, on Octopus Go night time tariff, it is only 7.5p / kWh. As always, Scotland looks beautiful, though the weather is not particularly summer-like on this occasion.

      Wow - the cheapest I get at home is 19p /kWh! So it's swings and roundabouts I guess!

    I think I'll stick to petrol cars for next few years till electric cars and charging points improve. Off to Oban this week for Paddle steamer Waverley sails, not run by electric!

      Aww thanks. I was thinking I was getting too old now, but then I saw a picture of Sting wearing his aged 70 and rocking the look, so maybe I'll dust them off ;)

      @@andrewjditton Oh please, never! You look phenomenal. I find that men can only look better with leather pants on as they age. Truly. I’ve even seen stock photos of an 80-year old man riding motorcycles, wearing them, and he looks so badass. And you’re right about Sting. ❤️

      I do at times. But I don't miss the noise and vibration of the ride. And it's far more relaxing to tow the smaller caravan.

    Thanks Andrew for the honest review of your e vehicle in a towing situation. Without doubt its a very nice vehicle, however, to my mind when one has to constantly top up the tank and worry about whether the next location has suitable or operational charge points its just too much to deal with, add to that having to hang around while charging when you just may want to keep moving is too much!
    I live in Australia and I can't see the time when e vehicles will be practical her as the distances we cover are so vast. One reviewer here was so frustrated with charge points that he had reached the point where he was abut to call the car manufacturer to have the car transported away. This local experience is worth a look or a laugh!

    I'm not quite sure what can of worms you have seemingly opened, but it isn't necessarily a good thing to leave worms canned up! The future is going to be EV, whether we like it or lump it, and all aspects of car life are going to have to adapt. The first thing that needs to happen is that the ludicrous 'pull in' style charging points need to follow the traditional method of petrol stations and be 'drive through'. Towing trailers of any shape, size or form is not going to disappear.

    43kW chargers are abysmally slow! Especially with this car...it's really hampering a really good car. Sadly upgrading chargers is not something that necessarily will automatically happen: the grid and substations are often limited....
    I'd be very interested in a video in an area with 150kW+ chargers.... There the optimizing of when and how far to charge becomes a thing. Well, maybe at least: it's still likely to be far enough to the next charger that you are forced to charge to a high SoC.

      My Kia came with an Ionity package for 12 months, so when we head further afield over the summer we will hopefully find out. Agreed, range is not the issue as people believe, its the charging network, both speed and availability. Cheers.

    Fabulous info providing a real world guidline as of May 2022... one can't help but think this will (and, perhaps, must) change over the forthcoming months and years. The infrastructure has so far to go and surely batteries will improve and (one dreams) better onboard energy recapture and perhaps generation for emergency backup... as others have noted, too, the lifespan of the 'engines' will not be anything like the dear old ICE. Will be really interested in next week's vid with the week in parkup info, as that is something that could directly affect some decisions. Cheers (and ear chooks to Dougal), YAM xx

    Of course you know what the gov will do: once everybody goes electric electricity prices at charging stations will increase to the same price point as petrol :-) Enjoy it while it lasts.

      My thoughts too .. hoping to go electric as need a new car soon. But once we buy into them government will pounce and hike the price. 🤦🏼‍♀️

      Appropos the range. My Audi says 200 miles (that’s 165ish really. Two thirds towing. Things are improving: the A6 Etron boasts 425 miles. Knock off 25% would be my guess. You have to dig deep to get one, though.

  • @andrewjditton

    Yes, I omitted the charging stop at Arisaig - doh! But that was 25p per kW/h so it would only have reduced the cost of the EV charging slightly.

    Wish Green echo electric car owners understood how planet forests being decimated to get to rare earth metals to build electric motors, these cars are huge and have chips that are expensive to produce, little 3 cylinder petrol car hyper efficient engine more echo friendly

    Free chargers should be banned as too many people abuse them and use them instead of charging at home. Councils are also notorious for not looking after chargers letting them break down and not fixing them, luckily the Electric Highway issues are being fixed thanks to Gridserve coming in. But probably needs laws in place to ensure chargers are never down for more than a certain period before penalties start for the charging providers whoever they are Councils or otherwise. Unfortunate there wasn't any 100+kW chargers at least so far in any of those locations and 43kW is a weird figure, I would have thought 50kW but really need 100kW as new EV's such as your EV6 can charge at much higher rates even if they add another charger at some of the key locations which are 100-150kW rated and offers redundancy and that two EV's can charge simultaneously one on the older and one on the newer charger.

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  2 роки тому

      Agreed. I've come to the conclusion that there we be no such thing as 'range anxiety' if the charger network was robust. I think 'Charger Anxiety' is a more appropriate label!

    This Shows how USELESS EV's actually are in Real use.
    EV's ARE A JOKE.
    Way under developed. Not yet properly Invented.
    Like Putting a Cake in the Oven for 5mins & expecting it to be Cooked perfectly.
    Caravan Leisure Batteries need to Charge whilst driving, to arrive on site Fully charged.
    Then use Fold out solar panels to top up the charge.
    Towed by a Petrol Car, Converted to LPG,
    Fit a Diesel Heater to the Caravan & use RED Diesel for heating. or caravan Gas bottles.

      Sorry you feel EVs are a joke. Although having calculated my cost per mile compared to diesel, I think the joke might be elsewhere.
