    1. My motivation were my parents who asked me to be a civil servant. Its a job my mother and father asked me to perform and i am trying o do it as sincerely as possible. Biggest motivation has always been my family. Something should always push you to be closer towards your goal- it could be internal or external. In my case it was mainly external. I am very happy and privileged to have the support base that i have.
    2. As i look towards my prep backwards - I started prep in 2010 end. Listen to me not only coz i have rank 3 but also becoz i have experience of 4-5 years. K, experience of 5 yrs speaks. We should be humble enough to learn from anyone and everyone we come across.
    3. What does UPSC look for in candidates?- Firstly you must be humble, humble to learn from anyone. Secondly, be simple in your approach and write multi dimensional answers. Thirdly, be very honest in your answers and interview. For ex, if in interview they ask you why you want to become IAS officer its okay to say because my mother and father have asked me to! Donot concoct stories.
    4. How to prepare for Pre and Mains- I learnt by trial and error. I will share it with you. Hope it benefits you. You have to prepare for pre and mains in an integrated manner. Donot prepare separately for pre and mains.
    5. Sources- For GS portions- select one good source (not multiple) for every portion of the syllabus. Look at books suggested by different toppers online and compile a list of books that is common to them. Select one book for every portion of syllabus and then stick to it. Read 1 book only and thoroughly.
    6. While going through any chapter of any subject- go through past years pre and mains papers side by side. This way you can connect what you are reading to what UPSC has been asking. It is very important to follow this. If you keep on only reading without connecting to what UPSC has been asking, it will create problems. You should know whether with your level of preparation you are able to answer the questions or not. It will also help you improve over time.
    7. Regarding prelims- finish basic books of every subject. Then take more and more test series. Solve maximum test series. I myself solved 13 mock tests this year before pre. From test series, you will create huge inventory of Questions you donot know. Maintain register of all Questions you couldnot solve. Understand them and try to improve. Your learning should never stop. Many Questions are now being repeated in Prelims, so it can help you a lot.
    8. You should discard book reading after 2-3 reading as law of diminish returns sets in. Beyond 2-3 readings book wont add any value to your answers. Then attempt max mocks to come across new Questions. Attempt lot of mocks- Instead of relying only on your brain thus you can use the brain bank of leading institutes like IAS Gurukul before attempting Pre. This will help you clear prelims with sufficient confidence. With this strategy you will definitely clear the pre.
    9. Mains prep- Do not waste 2months period between pre and pre result thinking whether you will clear pre or not. Else mains preparation automatically falters. 90% of UPSC answers were based on a single strategy- even if you know the index of concerned subject, write just 1 line on every chapter listed in index you will have written a wonderful answer and the teacher will be amazed and dazzled at how you approach the question. Say if question is on impacts of social globalization on Indian society write 1 line on every topic listed in Sociology book index- marriage, caste, kinship, rituals, etc. If the question is on economic impacts of globalization , write 1 line on every topic listed in economic survey- agri, industry, services, fiscal management, human development. It sounds easy but requires lot of practice and is very practical and effective. Do a lot of answer writing practice through mocks of leading institutes like IAS Gurukul.
    10. It happens that no matter how much you study, when you see the Q paper you go blank. It happens with me even after 4 years of preparation. You just need to manage that situation through simple points- first and foremost at least remember index of all books you have read! Not the content of the chapter just its name, this will help you write very good answers! It will be one of the best answers you can write under pressure and tension. And using this method, you can write a multidimensional answer on any topic on the spot. Instead of relying on your individual creativity, use this simple tool to write good quality answers for every question.
    11. If the q is general- what are the impacts of globalization- mentions all its impacts briefly- social, political, economic, cultural, technological.
    12. Do not try to rote and reproduce from editorials or any 1 book. It will limit your answer. What you read is not so important. Ultimately what you write is essential. If an editorial reflects 1 perspective, your answer should not be limited to it- it should reflect diverse perspectives.
    13. Essay writing: First, choose an essay topic on which you have most knowledge on. Not on considerations like how many others are likely to attempt it. You need to have raw material with you for the chosen topic. Prepare 10 good quality facts that capture the macro picture on every topic; along with quotations on every topic. Even if you don’t know quotations, you can manage without it. Define the key terms in the essay. Elaborate different perspectives in the essay- administrative, political, social, cultural, economic, international, etc. Finally, take a definitive stand in your essay.
    14. Key to success in preparation- Perseverance, learning at each and every stage.
    15. Coaching- IAS Gurukul - You require good mentors, their vision and direction. Under overall mentorship of Pranay Aggarwal Sir (Director, IAS Gurukul) focussing on test series and writing answers and getting them evaluated you can greatly benefit. You require to frame a number of answers. Pick up max pre and mains test series.
    16. In the end- Be humble, be polite enough to learn from everyone. Never let success get to your head, always remain grounded and firmly rooted to your values. Thank you.
    Q&A:
    1. Can i take an extreme position in my answers?- When you read, you will come across various philosophies- left, right, centrist. Please remember no one is interested in your philosophy. It is important that you answer the question. Mention both sides - pros and cons of every debate. Mention what are the issues that need to be looked into. Mention what measures government has taken. Finally take a very balance position- better that your answer reflects govt perspective because govt takes a stand only after considering diverse perspectives. So your answer will reflect a balanced view. Mention both sides to write complete answers that reflects all perspectives and secure maximum marks. Your answer should also mention what further measures can be taken or possible solutions. Solutions can be suggested by simply reversing whatever issues have been identified as problems.
    2. Selecting optional- Optional selection is tricky. Select an optional as follows- first shortlist 3-5 subjects. Do not select optional on based of which subject is currently popular. Select an optional based on your interest and whether it is scoring over last 4-5 years in UPSC. History, Public Administration have stagnated. There will be pros and cons of every subject. Select an optional and stick to it. Optionals like Sociology, Geography and Philosophy are by and large okay. Sooner or later you will be rewarded with such optionals- stick to them. An optional with vast syllabus like engineering or law and technical optionals like medical science, if mastered, can also be rewarding. I took Punjabi literature as my optional and took coaching in Patiala and Jalandhar for it.
    3. Role of coaching and quality of IAS Gurukul- Any coaching gives you information which you must process on your own. Stick to a particular institution- say Pranay Aggarwal Sir- i have had him as an overall mentor. I have utilized his understanding in Test Series and other approaches. At the end you will realize you just need mentorship and personal guidance. Coaching and teachers like Pranay Sir have given me an overall mentorship. i have stayed in constant touch with my teachers. That overall constant touch, rather than any particular booklet from any institution has motivated me over the years. That will help you also to clear the exam.
    4. When to join test series?- gain as much knowledge from test series. For prelims, join test series in Jan/ Feb. Join Mains test series after Prelims exam, not before. Always write multidimensional answers.
    5. When reading newspaper, identify and note down in summary form the 3-4 main themes in an article or editorial. Do not try to memorize the editorial verbatim.
    6. English medium necessary? - English medium should be preferred if you can write simple English sentences. You do not need very good English. If you cant even write simple English, then choose Hindi medium. Sometimes writing in Hindi may be tougher than in English.

hugely disappointed by the video..this job needs high amount of internal motivation to do something for the country, but his motivation is cus his mom and dad wanted hm to bcme civil servant..seriously?
our county lost one deserving candidate who could have taken his place

    • @raghwendrapratapsingh2443

well what i see is he started with the line that "be honest" and no matter what your motivation or inspiration is if you are honest enough to say in an upsc interview in your 4th attempt that you chose this field because your parents told you to do so you are going to benefit this country than any of the deserving candidate. It requires even more dedication to stick to a thing for 5 years just at the behest of your parents and if you have this amount of dedication for any job you will do justice to the job
