  • In this video, I read out my personal statement for medical school which resulted in a successful Oxford Medicine application. In the second half of this video, I also comment on each paragraph and what I think I could have done better, with some tips for Medicine / Oxford applicants.
    Having done many personal statement reviews over the past two years, I can now look back on my old personal statement with a much more critical eye, through which I can see many flaws and mistakes. Please be aware that this is NOT the perfect personal statement (far from it) and don’t assume that you can get an interview invitation just by writing a similar personal statement. Personally, I think the other aspects of my application (academic grades, BMAT, other achievements, etc) helped me a lot more!

    • @ZQmedicinspires

      I think they refer to similar things - basically an admissions or application essay, just that UK schools call it a personal statement. The requirements and length may also be a bit different depending on which school / country you're applying to.

    In my opinion personal statement should be something you should keep to yourself because it's private and confidential. You work hard for it. Once it goes viral, it is easy for others to copy your statement. I found that you have many advanced vocabularies which I think is the one component that captures the admission to interview you. Congratulations on being accepted! Good Luck!!

    • @ZQmedicinspires
      @ZQmedicinspires  Рік тому +2

      That's quite true! I hesitated for a long time before sharing it online, and only because I've seen others do the same, just as an example for students who are stuck or have never written a personal statement before. More as an idea of how to structure the personal statement and fit it into 4000 characters. In my video, I think I mentioned that viewers shouldn't copy my personal statement (I can't remember if I actually said that), and UCAS checks for plagiarism too. Looking back, I think my personal statement isn't the best and there's much room for improvement. Nevertheless, thanks for your kind comment and well wishes!

    Hi, I was just wondering what getting a “special diploma” from the University of Oxford means. Is it the same as getting a College Degree and is it enough for someone to get a Master’s at Wharton University?

    Hey, do you think mentioning a personal story would fit into the concept of the personal statement?
    (preparing for 2023 entry)

    • @ZQmedicinspires
      @ZQmedicinspires  2 роки тому +4

      Yes, that's possible if it's relevant, for example if it shaped or influenced your desire to pursue medicine (or another subject if you're applying for something else). We usually mention this in the introduction if it was an impactful personal experience.

    Hello madam, I am a high school student from Iraq and my high school diploma is not recognized in Britain. Please explain to me, do I have to do a preparatory year before applying to the university or after accepting the test because it is strange that I study a year and then fail to enter the university and I am sorry for the inconvenience

    • @ZQmedicinspires
      @ZQmedicinspires  2 роки тому +2

      Hi I'm not very sure about the academic qualifications for your country, but if it's not recognised by UK universities, you may have to take an international exam that is recognised. As far as I know, you can apply without doing a preparatory year, but if you don't have all the normal required qualifications, the preparatory year may give you a better chance at a successful application.

      Hi, I'm not entirely sure which grade that corresponds to in the UK. Most people apply in their final year of school before university. So if in October you will be in your final year, then yes you should take the BMAT.

    I had a question: if one is fortunate enough to become a doctor from Oxford, can they still return to their own country and practice there? Or do they need any degree? I am from Bangladesh. So I hope to know the answer with respect to Bangladesh.

    • @ZQmedicinspires
      @ZQmedicinspires  2 роки тому +1

      I am only familiar with the system in my own country, which has a "list of overseas medical schools with registrable basic medical qualifications" determined by the Singapore Medical Council. I believe there should be a similar list for your country, perhaps the Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council (from what I can find by searching online)? You should be able to return to your own country to practice, but may need to undergo additional training / take certain tests or exams, depending on the specific requirements for medical registration in your country.

    Is work exp necessary?

    • @ZQmedicinspires
      @ZQmedicinspires  Рік тому

      It's not strictly necessary but almost all applicants would have some form of work experience, especially for UK medical schools. If you don't have any work experience, you will probably be at a disadvantage compared to everyone else. If getting work experience at a hospital is difficult, I'd suggest volunteering / part-time work in hospitals or healthcare-related settings.

      @ZQmedicinspires  Рік тому

      @@sayanikasaha7660 I assume you're referring to the BSMS online work experience? I know that many students have done it, especially during the pandemic. I'm not sure if they're available now, but if you still have time before applying, I'd recommend trying to get some in-person work experience too, since they tend to be more immersive. If you wish to stand out with only the BSMS work experience (which many people have done as well), you'd have to write about your learning and reflections in a unique and insightful way.
