In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy demonstrates how to use a gauge wheel to determine the size or thickness of wire and sheet metal.
The gauge wheel is a simple tool with no moving parts. But, if you don't know how to use it correctly, you could end up making a mistake that could cost you. This is especially true if you are preparing models and technical drawings for mass production of an item. Too thick or too much metal makes an item heavy. That adds to your production costs as well as your shipping costs. Too thin or not enough metal may result in structural problems or deformation of an item.

So what is the answer to why not to use it on iron sheet metal ? Or stainless steel. ?
Gummy Bear There is a different gauge wheel for ferris materials, those that contain iron. Ferris materials are milled to slightly different thicknesses. So you need a gauge wheel for non-ferris materials if you want to get an accurate measurement on metals like silver, gold, copper and brass. Thanks for watching! : )
Hi I'm writing a project on using gauge wheels, and i was wondering if you could tell me why you require a gauge wheel in jewellery making? Also it would be very helpful to me if you knew any other trades which use one?
Beth Horton The gauge wheel is an important tool in the jewelry trade because it helps jewelers to identify sheet metal and wire of a particular gauge. Not every bit of material in a jeweler's inventory is marked with this information. Knowing the correct gauge of sheet and wire helps to maintain the consistency of a project and avoid mistakes. For example, ear wires should always be made from 20 gauge round wire. If the wire is too big, like 18 gauge, it might feel uncomfortable in the ear. And, if the wire is too thin, like 22 gauge, it increases the possibility that the wire could cut through the earlobe. Other professionals that would use a gauge wheel include sheet metal workers and blacksmiths. Model train enthusiasts might also need a gauge wheel in their toolbox.

Very nice video
Can we use the gauge wheel to determine the gauge of cold formed galvanized (G50 )steel
There is a gauge wheel specifically for steel/iron sheet and wire. The word ferrous should be stamped onto it somewhere. : )
i want to verify 3mm chequered plate .... what to refer about number and its relevant information of thickness
Hopefully the information in the video was helpful. Thanks for watching! 😀
i want to know what the number 11 means
@@OnlineJewelryAcademy what does this number 1..2..3 ..4..means
@@OnlineJewelryAcademy number 11 sheet size?
I can’t see the material. You’ll have to make your own determination. Perhaps you can get help locally.
So the higher the number the THINNER the metal ?? I thought it's vise versa ,,,, or is some kinds different ?
+fastfreddy3000
Yes, the higher the number the thinner the metal. If you examine the tool you will see that the numbers increase as the opening decreases. I hope the information in the video has been useful to you.
Thanks for watching! : )

where did you get your gauge wheel?
You can purchase one online from most jewelry supply companies.
