Time to start throwing these automotive manufacturer executives in jail for a few years. Fines mean nothing. The money eventually will be paid by the consumers for parts, service, new vehicles. If insurance covers it then insurance customers will pay for it thru increased insurance premiums. Perhaps start taking the money out of the executives pockets.

And I would agree with you, but also ULTIMATELY the stockholders pay for the transgressions. The story came out, and Ford's stock price took a hit. Everyone loses when manufacturers "cheat". Coming from a Ford new car owner and stockholder....

@@ripjones5294 Yes, but the stock will bounce back over time. Will Ford lower prices or insurance companies lower fees once the penalty has been recovered? The corporation executives still get away with this kind of thing.

It's not even a penalty. The fee made up 0.00014% of Ford's 2021 revenue. It's not even pocket change.
The issue would be lost value in the their stock, which would return with time anyways.

Our local Honda dealers are having a "Red Tag" sale, or whatever. Clearing out the 2022s. What inventory do they have to clear? One or two vehicles. And what will the sale price be? Probably a free oil change. You wonder what is going on behind the scenes. Things are a bit better here in Canada.

@@unconventionalideas5683 Honda does well in Canada. They may have a bit more inventory as some of their vehicles are made here. And the years end sales events save some money but not much. Honda and Toyota do not dicker as much as they know they will sell every vehicle they have in Canada. I heard that Honda Australia has really gone into the dumpster as they have set a "no haggle fixed price" system for their vehicles.

I still don't get why there is such shock at the dealer add-ons when I've been seeing these for over three decades?
For example, good luck finding a new vehicle WITHOUT an ADM sticker in the San Francisco Bay Area - which is how it's been since at least 1988.
Same for an on-the-lot Corvette… anywhere.

I was shopping used subaru forester limited. No one wanted to back off the price. I ended up finding a new limited with a 4000 market price adjustment. Advertised price was 36, 680. The market adjustment was not listed. They would only come down to $39, 900. I got on the phone with YAA and left the dealership, called other dealers who had incoming shipment and they accepted the advertised price of 37, 700 with a deposit $500 to hold it. I'm pretty sure they included a market price adjustment in the price of the car but much more reasonable than 39900. Thanks YAA!

Because of all the electronic components, like keyless entry and remote start, Cars are easier to hack and steal. There should be an extra layer of protection from these crimes. some of the safety features already recognize if a driver is paying attention, so why not add biometric security like the kind we use for our phones and tablets.

Car makers sell cars. They don't sell software. They're not going to push software updates like Microsoft does on your computer.
Car makers make cars, and add features that are secondary, like electronic components and computers.
They're not going to spend time fixing vulnerabilities because it's not in their interest. It would cost to much to pay smart software engineers to do this.
On top of that, cyber attacks are constantly changing. Companies who DO focus on keeping on top of new threats like McAfee even have a hard time with this.
So do you think a company that makes money producing vehicles will be better?

While your criticism of large corporations concerns with profit is valid, its cause is rarely understood. Remember how companies were more focused on doing a good job and customer satisfaction? What changed? Well, the Federal Government did not like the fact that the high salaries of top company officers were "written off" for tax purposes as operating costs. So they put limits on how much a company could pay its top executives and deduct it from reported profit. The result? Top executives began to be compensated in shares of company stock. The result was that top executives' focus was now on the stock prices. There is a lot less focus on keeping customers happy and a lot more on keeping the shareholders happy. These are two completely different approaches to business operations. Soon mergers with foreign companies became popular. American companies no longer consider themselves to be "American" but now they are "World" companies. What matters to the American consumer isn't a priority anymore as long as the stock prices keep rising. Can you get door handles of less quality and cheaper cost from Asia? Yes. Will the savings be passed on to the consumers? No. Will the earnings report improve stock prices? Yes. Will the shareholders like it? Also yes. Will the top executives benefit from the higher stock prices? You bet they will. Government regulations are no match for the powerful legal minds of major corporations.
