I find it funny that Applejack is at the fifth place spot, and yet has been the butt of "background pony" jokes. She has that much dialogue throughout the series, and yet people complained about how little focus she got.
I believe the Applejack "background pony" joke only started because of Super Speedy and The Last Roundup airing so close together, right? The joke was the other main characters had to step in and help save the day in Super Speedy since Applejack couldn't do it alone, and Derpy's short scene overshadowed anybody caring about the rest of the The Last Roundup episode. It was never related to anything as specific as episode appearances or lines spoken as far as I know. I think it was also amplified by the fact that Applejack appeared in merchandise less often than the other characters as well. At least, this is how I experienced it all. Maybe there were other reasons for the joke starting, and I'm sure it definitely warped over time and the origins of it all got lost on many people, but I don't remember the joke being around before January 2012. That happens a lot. I remember when the weird Christmas album came out people thought that the Pop Fly character was Button Mash because it sounded like him despite the fact the character we call Button Mash never said a word in the show. I feel like a lot of fans' perception of what is canon and fanon got mixed up a lot in their heads and I imagine it happens when somebody is introduced to the show *through* fandom content instead of the other way around.
@@TheDanteEX There's a lot to unpack in this comment, but the one thing I want to bring up about Applejack's episode problem is how it probably ties to people's problems with the character. Despite embodying the Team Mom trope, she struggles to solve her own conflicts a lot because her biggest character trait isn't as much honesty, as much as it is stubbornness. At least that's how I've come to see her, just looking at the show.
I find it interesting that Applejack appears the most throughout the series out of the main cast, yet still ends up in the 5th spot. It makes sense since she and Fluttershy already have their destiny in front of them. Showing they're already content with what they're do rather than pursuing a goal. Also, the movie really didn't help them.
One thing i wanna say related to screen time and such, is how incredible it is that Pinkie pie and Fluttershy NEVER Got an episode together. The closest we Got was the Buck Ball episode, but that was more of a rainbow dash and apple Jack episode wirh Pinkie pie and Fluttershy mainly as side character’s and more tools for rainbow dash and apple Jack to abuse until they learn Their lesson. (From a writing stand point anyway.) Us flutterpie/pinkieshy shippers have basically nothing other than that lol. I would say its maybe because of flutter and Pinkie sharing the same voice actor, but apple Jack and rainbow dash Got Their fair share of episodes together. So i dont know if its just a huge coincidence, they couldnt come up with any ideas, or the more wild theory of doing it om purpose. I Think of it as a huge coincidence that has lead to my flutterpie/pinkieshy OTP suffering. But it is really coincidental. (Btw if theres any Pinkie pie and Fluttershy episodes at the very last season im so sorry because i havent gotten there yet.)
That was a fact that always left me so depressed, especially after they introduced the map in season 5 which felt like the entire purpose of was to group up characters who didn't get a lot of 1:1 time together. Pinkie and Fluttershy are literally the only two characters of the mane 6 that, in the show's 221 episodes, never got a spotlight on just them together. That paired with the fact that a lot of their interactions, especially in the later seasons, is Pinkie making Fluttershy's problems worse and being outright antagonistic, it can feel like they aren't even that close of friends.
Hiii i wanna add to this comment bcs recently from other video ive learned about scraped ideas for episodes, and 2 that really resonated with me are an Apple Jack and Rarity episode, and the other a Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy episode! Both of them were supposed to explain how they met each other: Pinkie Pie arrives to Ponyville the first time, and finds Fluttershy having a picnic in the Woods with her animals. Since Pinkie gets along with her inmediatly, she tried to gift Fluttershy a party, but the canons ballons etcetc. This scares the critters, so Fluttershy tries to calm them while Pinkie goes to Ponyville, planing partys for everyone there instead. Aparently some of her clients dont like the type of party Pinkie organized, she gets sad and eventualy decides to leave Ponyville, finding Fluttershy again, and its her who gives Pinkie great advice: do personalized partys for each pony, doing what that pony likesminstead of solely what she likes. Aparently this works and im pretty sure in the end Pinkie organized a calm picnic party for Fluttershy and the animals, i may be wrong in some part of this but i decided to pretend this is my almost canon headcanon. In case you are wondering, the other episode is about Aj lying to Rarity about her time in Manehattan just to be her friend, Rarity feels inspired by this and creates a line of clothing based on what Aj said. Ofc Aj then admits that she didnt pay attention to any of that and Rarity forgives her in the name of friendship and aparently the dresses came out good so no damage was done. Edit bcs english is not my first language so i had to fix some mistakes (i probs still have more but dont mind that)

A very interesting video, one i really enjoyed rewatching! I do keep having the same thought though regarding songs; how did you attribute lines sang by a chorus? I understand including the songs as they're often part of the narrative, but I'm thinking of winter wrap up specifically where a good chunk of prominent background ponies join in throughout but the song lyrics will just be labelled as "chorus". Is there any chance cases like this could affect the final results?
There's DEFINITELY edge cases that will throw off the numbers. If I'm being honest, if the line was sung by "Chorus", I threw it out of the data set. It was the only way to stay semi-consistent, since the only other way to account for this would be to watch every song and check who sings the chorus parts. The text parser also would count a line like "no-no-no-no-no-no!" as one word instead of six. But if the lyric was sang by "Applejack and Pinkie Pie", I gave them both credit for the line. As for if this impacts the rankings, I think you'd have to go outside the Top 100 before you'd see any noticeable changes to the rankings.
[WARNING]: You are going to have a bit of a problem regarding the "crossover" characters. . You did not counted their words/screen-time in this "sister franchise", but now you will have to include them again [hint: Re-process all 12 characters with spoken lines in Equestria (giving both results: with & without "Friendship is Magic"). [Another thing] You may need some "nicknames" to differentiate each characters from their other_world doppelgangers. Magical Pony Realm: [Equestria]´s (unnamed) planet = "Terra Mystica" Muggle Human Realm: [Canterlot High School]´s "Earth" planet = "Terra Mundana" (Princess) Twilight Sparkle, The Alicorn = "magi!Twi" (Scientist) Twilight Sparkle, The Human = "sci!Twi"
