  • Last Christmas is the best Doctor Who Christmas Special and here's why.
I'm sorry for all the freeze frames, blank screens and stills in this video. For some reason the BBC gave me a really hard time with blocking the video for copyright. I went through about 15 re-edits trying to clear it. This went from a video I was super proud of to a complete mess and I'm really sorry about that, but I didn't have time to completely re-edit it from the ground up. I'm sorry this happened. However, you can watch the video in one of its earliest forms over on Patreon, it's a lot more watchable and accessible for only £1:

Hey guys, I'm sorry this video is such a mess, the BBC were really strict with copyright for some reason and it took about 15 re-edits to finally get it cleared. I wish this didn't have to happen but it was the only way to get it out this week. You can see the video in its original intended form on my Patreon :)

As a wheelchair user, I don't think the end reveal was ableist. During dreams, it's rare we bring the disabilities with us. It's a sort of escape. I usually hear the people make claims like this and its never someone whose actually in a wheelchair. Taking offense on behalf of someone else is one of the worst types of ableism in my opinion.

Anyhow, I agree that this is a great DW Christmas episode! Part of me kinda wishes this was Clara's final episode, even though I love Jenna and Peter's on screen chemistry. Proper closure to a companion's story is rare in DW so it would've been a beautiful exit.

I've always deeply appreciated Last Christmas' exploration of Clara's grief AND 12's love for/deep connection with her, even past the initial "go to hell" scene. These things don't just go away, and it's a nice reminder of that. It was important to TELL us these things in Death in Heaven/Dark Water, but now it's time to SHOW it, and it does this spectacularly.

People complaining about ableism in this episode are missing the point - the Dream Crabs don't just catch you in a dream - they bait a trap - they offer you something you want, and you do the work of trapping YOURSELF, willingly. Whether that be offering you the ability to walk, or to have friends, or to be with someone you lost... Everyone is creating their OWN lure and their own chains.

I'm glad Clara stayed on after this special. that original ending that was described would have been wonderful to see, but it's even better to have these two platonic soulmates have more adventures together in the TARDIS. As a special I rank it up there with The Snowmen, also because that one introduced us to the Victorian version of Clara. Santa was a snarky treat, and the play on Alien and The Thing somehow work even in a festive episode like this. It's a must see every holiday season. ❄🎄🎅

  • @TheOvervoid

On the disabled woman being able to walk reveal, I think it works, because: Dream! I'm terminally ill and have dreams walking, in my chair, being carried, flying etc. I personally think that had the 'ITS A DREAM' revelation not occurred at the end, and it wasn't such a whimsical episode (Dead Danny last Christmas with Clara anyone?) it would be yet another annoying reveal that disabled people dream of walking and ALSO dreaming of working, because SO MUCH MEDIA shows this to be the one desire of disabled people, when... many of us work. Many of us don't. Many of us do sometimes and don't at others. I wouldn't trade my life. I've done more whilst terminally ill than I would've in 80 (I haven't uploaded to my channel in two years but have recorded content... it isn't my main job anyway, incase someone looks). On another note, its such a trope that disabled people want to not be disabled... Whilst there is no choice involved, I'm not unhappy because I'm disabled. Have you seen my wheelchair!? It's got a 30kilometre range and tilts, rises, contracts etc. I am always comfy (bar my disease pain) in that thing and love it; but that doesn't mean my disease doesn't suck and I would give anything to stop the pain).
Also, as someone on lots of morphine for palliative care reasons, dreams really do become this whacky, glossy, other worldly thing.
CONCLUSION/ TLDR? If it weren't so well executed, and it weren't a dream which was massively far fetched, I'd think it ableist. But maybe it's just high as a kite dreaming? Regardless, within dreams we can be and do anything, gravity isn't always a thing within dream states! And the 'it's a long story' thing helps so much with this because your emotion in dreaming is palpable as you wake up. Reality is reality until you know otherwise. And 'every Christmas is last Christmas' makes me sob. Because yup, I'm dying of a disease - but anyone could die like Danny Pink did. In fact is very common. Thats another thing I loved about the nature of his death. It was so shocking because it was so ordinary. It hit a nerve with audiences because of how realistic it is. We aren't likely to die of dream bugs, but cars? Yup. It grounded the show - danger isn't just the Doctor's constant companion. It belongs to everyone.
Loved this episode. My fave Christmas special. Also the exploration of Clara's grief, and her denial literally nearly killing her - as it kills many - look up 'broken heart syndrome' is a real thing.
This episode was just fabulous (and your review!). Brilliant writing with complex whimsy.

This episode is so dear to me. Not only is it just phenomenal, I watched it for the first time about a week after a grandparent had died on Christmas. I think what is missed is that the Dreamcrabs survival strategy seems to be flawed. In this case only one survives.
However, maybe this is only due to it being Christmas. People blur the lines between fantasy and real, fact and fiction, and those dreams were all fueled by movies and the season.
Therefore Dr Who and Clara who lived lives like movies, would seem to Crabs as being realistic anchors to the others.
Everyone has a sense of longing mingled with satisfaction and the movies in their mind. So they meld.
Nonetheless its weakens the crabs and in a very real sense, Santa enables a fightback due to the season we hold in the originals honour. Hope abides.

I mean, none of them would have realised they were in the dream if not for the Doctor

Do we know why they didn’t go with Shona as the next companion?
Was it just because they were going to keep Clara, or was it actor availability issues, or was it just fan observations?
If it’s the former they could’ve done two companions, or like a reoccurring companion where they aren’t a full time companion but go on an adventure every now and then.

I haven't seen this episode but I have seen Faye Marsay in Andor and she was fantastic in that, stealing a lot of the scenes she was in (which is saying a lot considering the first 3 episodes she is featured in contain some of the best new characters in Star Wars) so I think she really would have made a fantastic companion, she certainly has the acting skills for it.

I much prefer this ending to the open one for Clara later on. Like, I'm happy with getting more Clara, but can you imagine having this kind of end with the staircase and splinters merging, followed by something similar to heaven's sent as a follow up special revealing the return of the time lords? I just prefer the feels and imagery of this to 'face the raven'

Hey Internet, let's discuss. With Harbo mentioning that Shona seemed so much out of place, may that have been a parallel to Ace? The young energetic woman somewhere she should not be, be it a frosty space station or an arctic research station?

The "able-ist" comments are ridiculous. I'm disabled, and I can relate to the character's dream. People should stop being so touchy. Though I'd take a bet that the majority of moaners were not disabled but do-gooders.

i personally really disliked this episode, not because it was silly, or anything like that, but because i thought the monster was kind of a tired concept, and the way the deaths are treated so flagrantly upset me. definitely one of my least favorite specials.
