I know nobody cares about the past but...1972 when I started I think this is as all I remember...The layout guy graded the long plates..lesser stuff on the bottom plate.( you could nail it straight on the snap line) ..then the top...top plate crowned up.(the double plate would be crowned down to get the wall as straight as possible)....Frammer separated plates and selected studs...all studs crowned up.(layed them out and picked one up by one end and your eye down the edge.throw bad ones out for block material and put all crown up)...nailed by hand with 16d commons, Watch for Japanese nails as they would fold up if you hit them to hard (Japanese stuff was the China stuff of today before they went high end). leave out the trimmers and jacks etc...leave out joist hangers......After a little drying out and the maybe the roof load come back and put in trimmers....hold up and mark below the header... leave the line.. and beat in to fit tight.....chisel the bottom of the joist for the hanger so as not to bump rock..before subs in come in run a long straight 2x4 mid wall and mark any studs out of line....cut a warped stud 1/2 way through and nail a 1x4 on the side flex the stud strait and nail (at least in the kitchen for the cabinets)....Out in the tracks all this was never done.....All hand nailed with 16d sinkers probably lubed with Ivory laundry soap flakes (real shreaded soap..the box with the lady on front..rummer the model was Linda lovelace any old timers remember???..I remember the perfume soap smell of nails in the morning...Better yet shred paraffin on the nails, a little gasoline, and burn the box..thats how the piecers up from LA did it...with their rigging axes with the blade cut off and claws welded on....does anyone remember??? In the tracks you worked like you were fighting a fire...burning....Piece workers made more many workers of the day..smart ones bought houses in the tracks they were working on...others had a new truck and a ski boat.......fun times... Now a carpenter in California cant speak English lives with a bunch of guys and drives a beater small car...o well
